Please circulate. ------------------------------------ Assistant Professor of Communication Law & Policy The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Communication in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS). This is a full-time position with a 9-month service period. The successful candidate will be an intellectually expansive scholar whose research and teaching address issues related to communication law and policy from a critical framework. The successful candidate also will have the ability to teach professional skills courses in video, web or print. An interest in community media or media activism is a plus. The successful candidate will be expected to work with diverse student populations, involve students in faculty research, and integrate new pedagogical techniques and technologies into teaching/learning. The position primarily contributes to the Communication major but also supports other interdisciplinary majors and concentrations at UW Tacoma. The position begins September 16, 2016, requires an earned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) at the time of appointment in Communication or related field with an emphasis in Communication Law and Policy. Candidates in the final stages of their dissertation will be appointed on an acting basis. Constructing and Consuming Gender through Media Call for Papers CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief: Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Mona Abdel-Fadil Submission deadline: 10 January 2016 (Full Papers) Aim A multitude of media formats are produced primarily for entertainment. Yet, much of such popular cultural production promotes particular worldviews, gender dynamics, political stances, consumerism patterns, and lifestyles. As Lila Abu-Lughod’s iconic study, Dramas of Nationhood, on Egyptian TV-Serials demonstrates, media producers may at times have strong ideological messages, which they wish to convey to their audiences through their media output. However, audience responses may not always match the intentions and anticipations of the authors. The worldviews and subjectivities of the individual media users, and the modes in which the engage with the medium, are equally important to analyze, in order to understand the complex responses of media audiences. In this special issue of CyberOrient, we aim to bring together scholarly work on a range of Middle Eastern and Muslim cultural media products. The goal is to examine how gender roles are constructed, transmitted, and negotiated, and at times put forward as part of lifestyle or ideological choices. Simultaneously, we are interested in how such products are received, imagined, and consumed in the every day lives of audiences. This special issue focuses both on media and cultural production in the Middle East as well as products intended for consumption by Muslim and Middle Eastern diaspora. Examples of media products include TV-series, films, talk shows, music, games, comics, webpages, YouTube videos, blogs and vlogs. Guiding questions for the contributions include: To what extent are cultural media products embedded with an ideological agenda or a blueprint for ‘ideal’ gender relations? How do audiences respond to media products’ prescriptions on gender and/or lifestyle? In what ways does consumer culture play into the media products? We welcome submissions from across disciplines and methodological approaches that are empirically and theoretically grounded. Jack Copeland wins the 2016 Covey Award presented by IACAP

The award is presented each year by the International Association for Computing and Philosophy (http://www.iacap.org/awards/ <http://www.iacap.org/awards/> ) in recognition of the work of senior scholars with a substantial record of innovative research in the field of computing and philosophy broadly conceived. As many of you may already know Professor Copeland FRS NZ is Distinguished Professor in Arts at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, where he is Director of the Turing Archive for the History of Computing. He is also Honorary Research Professor of Philosophy at the University of Queensland, Australia, and in 2012 was Royden B. Davis Visiting Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Department of Psychology at Georgetown University, Washington DC. In 2013-14 he was Visiting Professor of Information Science at Copenhagen University. He co-directs the Turing Centre at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. His books include The Essential Turing (Oxford University Press), Colossus: The Secrets of Bletchley Park’s Codebreaking Computers (Oxford University Press), Alan Turing’s Electronic Brain (Oxford University Press), Computability: Turing, Gödel, Church, and Beyond (MIT Press), Logic and Reality (Oxford University Press), and Artificial Intelligence (Blackwell). He has published more than 100 journal articles on the philosophy and history of computing, and on mathematical and philosophical logic. Oxford University Press published his highly accessible paperback biography Turing in October last year. We invite papers for a proposed Special Issue in Big Data and Society<http://bds.sagepub.com/>, Sage’s inter-disciplinary, open access, peer-reviewed scholarly journal that explores the social implications of Big Data from social sciences, humanities and computing perspectives. Our central proposition: today we live in a techno-cultural condition of increased and normalised transparency through various veillant forces of mutual watching. Our central question: what are the technical, social, economic, political, legal, ethical and cultural implications of this situation? Drawing on the many academic disciplines that deal with issues of veillance and transparency, we seek theoretical and empirical academic papers; artistic, activist and educational provocations (the journal can link to digital versions of these); and shorter commentary from the wide range of actors involved in these debates (including data regulators, intelligence and security services, private companies, NGOs, politicians and journalists). Specifically, we are interested in the following questions (each unpacked further below): 1. On Theory-Practice: How useful are theories of ‘veillance’ in explaining transparency practices in the post-Snowden, ‘Big Data’ era? 2. On Ethics, Values and Norms: What, if anything, can or should we do about practices of watching that operate without informed consent or adequate processes of accountability? 3. Deadline this Tuesday... and apologies for cross-posting Children's and young people's rights in the digital age Call for papers for a special issue of NEW MEDIA & SOCIETY Editors: Sonia Livingstone and Amanda Third Abstracts due (400-500 words): 15th September 2015 In 1989, Sir Tim Berners Lee released the code that would form the foundation of the World Wide Web, which now boasts an audience of three billion users worldwide. The same year, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the history of the UN. The trajectories thereby set in motion have recently become explicitly intertwined, with growing momentum behind calls for the recognition of the potential of online and networked media for promoting children's rights. At the same time, researchers, child rights' advocates and internet governance experts, among others, are concerned that children's rights are being newly infringed rather than enhanced in the digital age. While the past quarter of a century has seen the emergence of a significant literature examining the broad issue of children's rights and, in parallel, a burgeoning field of research on children's new media and digital practices in a variety of national and international contexts, the question of children's rights in the digital age has yet to receive sustained scholarly attention, especially compared with the attention paid to adult rights online. Within popular discourse, children and young people are frequently configured as riding at the forefront of the 'digital revolution'. Nonetheless, as high level debates about global internet provision and governance extend their geographic, political and economic scope, the position of children and young people is barely acknowledged. Further, in the twists and turns of often heated policy debates, children's own experiences, voices and interests are vastly under-considered. This special issue thus seeks to contribute to the definition, empirical evidence base, and theorisation of the field internationally. Not only are children's needs and experiences in the digital age often treated as merely a minority interest but they are also often seen as essentially problematic, as demanding exceptional treatment from adult society or causing unwarranted restrictions on adult freedoms. It is important to recognise the fundamental nature of the challenges - this is not just a matter of 'digital rights' but of all children's rights as they may be being transformed in a 'digital age'. Nor is it just a matter of the exceptional circumstances that apply to children, for addressing the rights of children and young people also has implications for adult rights in a digital age. How does a consideration of children compel a wider re-examination of the concepts both of the digital and of human rights? If children's rights in the digital age have yet to receive attention in the global North, this is even more acute in the global South. The tipping point has already passed, with two thirds of the world's nearly three billion internet users living in developing countries, many of them children. At present, the evidence regarding their online activities is very patchy, too often drawing on anecdote, practitioners' observations and institutional reports or media accounts. There is thus an urgent need for a scholarly focus on the rights of children and young people within this larger picture of expanding connectivity in the global South. This is vital to foster debates about children's rights informed by dialogues among diverse epistemologies, experiences and normative frameworks. This special issue seeks to unpack the ways digital media are impacting - both positively and negatively - children's rights today and, in doing so, to reflect on the ways that children's rights might provide a meaningful counterpoint from which to consider the role of 'the digital' in advancing human rights more broadly. Assembling contributions from leading scholars and practitioners in the field internationally, this special issue seeks to bring fully into view the ways in which children's rights - indeed rights generally - may be being reconfigured by the appropriation of digital networked technologies around the world. Submissions will critically examine the normative and socio-technological assumptions embedded in conceptual, policy and practitioner perspectives. To catalyse the debates, we now call for reflective papers of 6000-7000 words analysing key dilemmas or tensions shaping children's rights in the digital age, as well as shorter empirical or practitioner pieces (3000-4000 words each). Papers on key dilemmas or tensions that respondents to the call might address include: * The tension between universal or fundamental human rights and the specific rights demanded by the digital age * The tensions between 'adult rights' and 'children's rights' * The relationship between children's rights and their citizenship * Collective rights versus individual rights * The tension between 'adult power' and 'children's rights' * The tension between the universal ('the child', 'rights') and the specific (the lived experiences of children) * Hierarchies of children's rights in the digital age * Children's rights in the digital age in the global North and global South Empirical or practitioner pieces might address: * Children's privacy rights and the role of peers and peer culture * Youth participation rights in the mediated public sphere * Historical shifts in children's communication rights * Child protection in the global South: is the internet helping or hindering? * From principles to practice: applying arguments about digital rights in particular domains * Who is (or should be) ensuring children's rights online - parents, government, industry? * Children's creative workarounds to gain health resources online * Evaluating initiatives for e-learning and other digital educational programmes * How are children's rights represented or abused in 'big data' * Digital exclusion as a barrier to children's communication rights * Rethinking possibilities for children's identity and expression in the network society * Problems of reputation for networked youth * Public policy /multi-stakeholder governance regarding children's rights in the digital age * Children's information rights: what are the dilemmas? * Education for all - newly possible in the network society? * Grooming, hacking, cyberstalking, trolling and other crimes against children online * Meanings/limits of "voice" in participatory research on children's rights in the digital age * The intergenerational dimensions of children's rights Please submit abstracts for either the 'dilemma' papers or 'empirical/practitioner papers' by 15th September 2015 to both editors - Sonia Livingstone (s.livingstone(a)lse.ac.uk<mailto:s.livingstone@lse.ac.uk>) and Amanda Third (A.Third(a)uws.edu.au<mailto:A.Third@uws.edu.au>). Strong submissions typically build on relevant research and frameworks beyond a single home discipline. The program committee is multidisciplinary and will expect that contributions expand what is known when the state of the art of several relevant source literatures is considered. Invited Topics -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We solicit paper submissions reporting on rigorous research on methodologies, studies, analyses, tools, or technologies for learning at scale. Learning at Scale includes MOOCs, games (including massively multiplayer online games), citizen science communities, and other types of learning environments which (a) provide learning experiences to large number of learners and/or (b) produce detailed, high volume data about the learning process. Papers that tackle specific aspects of scale are particularly encouraged, for example, papers that deal with learning or educational phenomena that can only occur, be supported, or be observed with very large numbers of students, or in which the system improves after being exposed to data from previous use by many students. Submissions must be in PDF format, written in English, contain original work and not be under review for any other venue while under review for this conference. All papers should be submitted through the EasyChair. In order to increase high quality papers and independent merit, the evaluation process will be double blind. The papers submitted for review MUST NOT contain the authors' names, affiliations, or any information that may disclose the authors' identity (this information is to be restored in the camera-ready version upon acceptance). Please replace author names and affiliations with Xs on submitted papers. In particular, in the version submitted for review please avoid explicit auto-references, such as "in [1] we show" -- consider "in [1] it is shown". I.e., you should cite your own relevant previous work, so that a reviewer can access it and see the new contributions, but yet the text should be written so that it does not state that the cited work belongs to the authors. ### Work-in-Progress A Work-in-Progress (WiP) is a concise report of recent findings or other types of innovative or thought-provoking work that has not yet reached a level of completion that would warrant submission of a full paper. Topics are the same as those listed for full papers. At the conference, all accepted WiP submissions will be presented in poster form. Selected WiPs may be invited for oral presentation during the conference. Rejected full-papers can be resubmitted as WiP and will be evaluated accordingly. Formatting: Work-in-Progress submissions 4 pages or fewer in length in the Extended Abstracts Format[3] and submitted as a PDF file. Due to the very rapid selection process we cannot offer any extensions to the deadline. WiP submissions are not anonymous and should therefore include all author names, affiliations and contact information. If accepted, you should expect to prepare a poster to present at the conference venue. WiP submissions should be submitted through the EasyChair. ### Demonstrations Demonstrations show aspects of learning at scale in an interactive hands-on form. A live demonstration is a great opportunity to communicate ideas and concepts in a powerful way that a regular presentation cannot. We invite demonstrations of learning and analytical environments and other systems that have direct relevance to learning at scale. We especially encourage authors of accepted papers and industrial partners to showcase their technologies using this format. Demonstration submissions are 2 pages or fewer in length in the Extended Abstracts Format[3] and submitted as a PDF file. A demonstration proposal should address two components: * The merit and nature of the demonstrated technology. If the proposed demonstration is associated with a Full Paper or a WiP submission, please point to the title of the submission instead of repeating the information here. * Details of how the demo will be executed in practice, and how visitors will interact with it during the conference. Proposals for demonstrations should be submitted through the EasyChair. ### Archival Proceedings Full papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by the ACM Press in the ACM Digital Library. Work-in-Progress and Demonstration papers will appear in a separate part of the conference proceedings. The status of Work-in-Progress paper will be akin to what CHI describes as "semi-archival", meaning the results reported in the WIP must be original, but copyright is retained by the authors and the material can be used as the basis for future publications in ACM venues as long as there are significant revisions from the original.
