We want to create an advanced class for master level journalism students building on basics they have already learnt. Dear all: The Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi)<http://www.gppi.net/home/> in Berlin and New America<http://www.newamerica.org/> in Washington, DC, are seeking fellows for the inaugural round of Transatlantic Digital Debates<http://www.transatlanticdigitaldebates.net/home/>. Transatlantic Digital Debates is a dialogue program that brings together nine young professionals from Germany and nine from the US to meet for two week-long sessions in summer and fall 2016. It is funded by the Transatlantic Program from the German Federal Government. Fellows will engage in discussions on innovation, regulation in the digital economy as well as cybersecurity and privacy. We are accepting applications from now until May 1, 2016. Best regards, Isabel Skierka Call for Applications Transatlantic Digital Debates is a joint project between the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) and New America that brings together young professionals from Germany and the United States who are committed to finding answers to key challenges that sit at the intersection of technology and policy. We seek 18 participants who work in civil society, academia, politics and business and who are willing to explore and challenge each other’s ideas concerning the future of the digital economy and cybersecurity in Europe and the US. The fellows will have the opportunity to debate and discuss their ideas with leading experts and practitioners from different sectors. They will emerge from the program with a broader understanding of the pressing issues that will define transatlantic relations in the coming years and with new ideas on how to tackle respective challenges. We hope that our fellows will form a strong network of future decision-makers in the US and Germany. Over the course of 2016, the fellows will meet for two week-long dialogue sessions in Germany and in the US. Discussions will center on two issue areas: on innovation and regulation in the digital economy as well as on cybersecurity and privacy. The two dialogue sessions will take place in Berlin and Munich (July 9–16, 2016) and in San Francisco and Washington, DC (November 12–19, 2016). The fellows of Transatlantic Digital Debates will disseminate the results of their work through blog posts on the program website, op-eds in major publications, and high-profile presentations. The application deadline is May 1, 2016, at 23:59 Central European Time (CET). Application Requirements Interested applicants must: * Be a citizen of Germany or the United States. * Have at least three years of professional experience. * Be under the age of 35. * Demonstrate a strong interest in internet and technology policy and in contributing to addressing emerging global challenges. * Have an outstanding academic record and an excellent command of English. * Demonstrate commitment, motivation and leadership. * Be able to attend both sessions of the program. Successful candidates will be asked to provide written confirmation from their employers agreeing to the time commitment. Please submit your application as a single PDF file. ISMI 2016 The fifth annual International Symposium on Media Innovations 13-14 October 2016 - University of Oslo, Norway Submission deadline: 750-word extended abstracts due 15 May 2016 CALL FOR ABSTRACTS The fifth International Symposium on Media Innovations will unite scholars and industry representatives to discuss innovation in the media industry. As the media sector is in flux, many challenges and opportunities will be addressed in this symposium. The symposium will be held in the University of Oslo, Norway, where the first symposium was held in 2012. The focus of the Media Innovations symposium is on evolutions and trends in the different media sectors. We aim to explore how changing technologies, and changing modes of usage and engagement with media bring about innovation and transformation of the media industry. The symposium will be in two parts: An industry session and an academic session, both covering innovations in all media sectors. We invite submissions for papers on any aspect of media innovation, including the following topics: * Innovation research through design * Innovation in formats and genre * Innovation in news * Innovation in entertainment * Innovation in business models * Innovation in distribution and delivery (reaching the audience in new ways) * Innovation in use * Innovation in cross- and trans-media production, delivery, and use * Innovation in advertising formats and strategies. * Failed innovations: New products that did not succeed. Yet, deployments of interactive technologies for such purposes often lead to a paradox: the tools algorithmically "optimize" heating and lighting of houses without regard to the dynamics of daily life in the home; they collect and display data that allows us to reflect on energy and emissions, while raising our expectations for comfort and convenience; we can share ideas for sustainable living through social networking and online communities, yet these same systems enable entirely new forms of consumerism. By acknowledging these paradoxes we make room for critical inquiry into digital technology¹s longer-term impacts on ideals of sustainability. This text brings together diverse scholars, researchers and practitioners willing to study, critique, and reorient dominant narratives and approaches to designing interactive digital technologies that support sustainability. Objectives - To articulate and address the conundrums (theoretical, methodological, practical) for digital technology, and sustainable HCI in particular, in a single definitive volume; - To advance an iterative, interactive process (e.g., virtual workshops and one-to-ones) between scholars in the field; - Create a touchstone that scholars, students and interested members of the broader public can use to develop their understandings of sustainability in a digital future; - To initiate accessible and engaging modes of broad dissemination to coincide with the release of the book (e.g., video shorts and animations). Some systems have responded through a significant investment in MOOCs and new online learning programs. Other systems have responded through taking a more cautious research approach. Colleges, liberal arts schools, and smaller universities are currently evaluating how the MOOC phenomenon will influence their existing offerings and what unique experiences remain for local, on-campus learning. More recently, virtual reality and other wearable technology indicate a future with expanded data collection and increasingly authentic learning experiences. They also raise concerns about how technology will influence privacy and who has ownership of, and access to, our learning and related biometric data. The growth of digital learning, both in terms of research and practice, is part of a broader societal transition to a digital and data-driven world. Reports of future mass upheaval in employment driven by artificial intelligence are starting to cause alarm. Today, cognitive technologies can learn and in some cases outperform humans. Against this backdrop, the theme and guiding focus for LWMOOC3 is: What does it mean to be human in a digital age? What does it mean to learn in a digital age? As the influence of MOOCs and digital learning in general grow, it’s time to review many of the assumptions that researchers and practitioners currently hold. Are we creating the type of knowledge infrastructure through digital learning that will enable a generation of creative, innovative, honest, considerate, socially responsible, motivated, and full-filled learners? Or are we meeting AI in the middle by dumbing down and automating our learning needs to such a degree that the machines ought to take over? This conference plans to bring together educators, technologists, researchers, learning scientists, entrepreneurs, and funders of MOOCs to share their innovations, discuss the impact on education and to answer practical questions such as: - What are the social and affective dimensions of learning online and in a MOOC? - What is the role of the human educator in automated learning and evaluation environments? - How do MOOCs and digital learning impact learners across their full life cycle, from birth to retirement? - How can VR and wearable technologies extend both the experience of learners and the research interests of academics? - What are the challenges of integrating rich multi-source data streams to present a holistic view of learner engagement and performance? - What are the assumptions that we are making regarding digital learning and the role of education in society? Are these assumptions accurate? What type of future are we creating for learners and for society with current digital and on-campus education practices? - How do we measure learning in and with MOOCs? What does successful MOOC learning look like and how does it differ from traditional in-classroom learning? - Should the holistic development of learners, such as social and emotional skills and character strengths, be considered in digital learning? If so, what are the challenges and considerations in doing so? TOPICS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We call for submissions to LWMOOC3 from a diversity of disciplines and topics (see details below). In particular, we invite submissions that build on the main theme of the conference and highlight the strength of the core MOOC research community, with the important input from the other related research domains. These descriptions should include interesting findings that they have learned through their work that they believe would be valuable to share with other practitioners and researchers, and/or a question or challenges that they confronted that they would like to discuss with others.
