Dear All, I would like to ask for some advice on visual teaching materials. I am soon to teach ma research stream on 'Internet Governance & Human Rights' for final year JD students at Melbourne Law School. Since I was free to design the course and materials, I thought it would be nice to include some visuals - short videos, interviews, exciting prezis - anything else that would be stimulating and of importance to such course. Anything suggestions either generally on Internet Governance, or digital rights, or Internet & Democracy would be highly appreciated! We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to be connected to their friends, families, and cultures no matter where they are. The issues surrounding global, international, and cross cultural issues in Information Systems (IS) attracted much scholarly attention and have been explored under myriad contexts. In line with the track recognition that the Internet has transformed the way we work, learn, and play, our minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. The minitrack welcomes submissions that relate to all aspects of global IS, or IS research situated in a global, international or cross-cultural context. The minitrack is open to all methodological approaches and perspectives. We are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. Submissions will be judged on quality of the system or of the analysis, and the applicability of the results to other democracies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PhD Colloquium The colloquium continues the tradition of PhD workshops on e-voting. Since 2006 the PhD seminars have focused on various aspects of e-voting including technical aspects, legal challenges, identity management, verifiability of the vote, etc. The workshops took place in various locations in Austria, Catalonia, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. The goal of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of space for discussion and initiating collaboration based on presentations by attendees. What makes this colloquium special is that it is truly interdisciplinary, where PhD students from legal backgrounds are joined by PhD students with computer science and cryptography backgrounds and by social scientists. Master students in e-voting and related areas are also welcome to participate. Each interested participant should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) of some two pages length using the conference platform. In addition to this proposal, participants are asked to fill out a questionnaire about their PhD project. This questionnaire will be send by email to participants who have submitted their proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Format of the Conference The format of the conference is a three-day meeting. The PhD colloquium takes places on the day before the formal conference begins. Dear list members, I'm working on how people use Instagram to recover from an eating disorder. I'm conducting an ethnography and come continually across motivational sentences with self-care and self-help advice. In fact, there are accounts aimed exclusively at producing and disseminating this type of images. I've looked for literature on this matter, but didn't find anything relevant. Any reference or details about people working or ongoing research projects in this matter will be highly appreciated. I will also really appreciate if you could give me any suggestions of literature or tell me about people and projects on how therapists and recovered patients use social nets to help others recover as an actual job Thank you a lot in advance. In this masterclass, participants will explore the challenges and opportunities in studying data-driven discrimination, and question the nature and limits of the critical study of data-driven technologies. The class will begin with a stage-setting conversation led by Dr Gangadharan about the variety of approaches to understanding the discriminatory impact of automated computer systems, including legal, computer scientific, sociological, and STS approaches. Using a set of guided questions, participants will be asked to assess the critical nature of these studies and compare how each conceptualizes power and impotence in or of data-driven systems. In the remaining portion of the master class, participants will work in both small and large groups to assess their own research or research interests on the topic of big data, artificial intelligence, smart technologies, or data-driven systems. The master class will conclude with an overview of the principles and practices of participatory action research that informed the set of questions and activities used in the class. By the end of the class, participants will become comfortable with applying a set of tools and practices that can expand the critical nature of one’s work on data and discrimination. Participants are welcome to submit a 400-word summary of their work in the area of big data, artificial intelligence, smart technologies, and other data-driven systems, which will be distributed to all participants in the masterclass. Please include a sentence or two as to what the unique contribution of your research is. Send your summary to RMeS-fgw(a)uva.nl before 1 June 2017. Summaries will be distributed one week prior to the session. Participants should come having read all summaries and be prepared for a very hands-on and interactive session. BIOGRAPHY In 2015, Dr Seeta Peña Gangadharan was appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics and Political Science. *** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: ACM IUI 2018 to be held in Tokyo, Japan, 7th-11th March 2018 http://iui.acm.org/2018/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACM IUI 2018 is the 23rd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. In 2018, IUI will be held in the Hitotsubashi Hall in central Tokyo Japan from March 7th - 11th and will co-locate with the Japanese IPSJ Interactions conference. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Along with 25 other topics in AI & HCI, this year we especially encourage submissions on explainable intelligent user interfaces for IUI 2018. ** Why you should submit to ACM IUI ** At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://tiis.acm.org) special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2018". ** Submission Guidelines ** - Full paper (anonymized 10 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) should make substantial, novel, and relevant contribution to the field. - Short paper (anonymized 4 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) is a much more focused and succinct contribution to the field. Short papers are not expected to include a discussion of related work that is as broad and complete as that of Full papers. - Anonymization: ACM IUI uses a double-blind review process. All submissions must be appropriately anonymized according to the following guidelines: -- Author’s names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper. -- Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review process. -- Self-citations should be included where necessary, but must use the third person. For example, "... as shown in our previous user study [2] ... " is not allowed, whereas "... as shown in Smith et al.
