Please mark your calendars for the DataONE Users Group (DUG) meeting to be held July 24th – 25th 2017 and co-located with the Summer ESIP Federation Meeting at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. The DataONE Users Group (DUG) meeting will be a 2-day event featuring plenary presentations, topical breakout sessions, and community-led discussions. Mozilla is recruiting undergraduates to lead campus open source clubs

Mozilla is in the process of creating a network of open source focused clubs of US and Canadian college campuses (going international will happen in phase 2). These clubs are intended to support open source learning and development activities of all kinds (not just Mozilla projects). Mozilla is currently in the process of recruiting student leaders who will help develop the program over the summer and work to get clubs up and running in the fall. Their goal is to choose leaders from the most diverse pool possible. In particular they are hoping to recruit some more female and minority leaders. DATE AND TIME Thu 18 May 2017 18:00 – 21:00 GMT LOCATION Goldsmiths University of London Lewisham Way Professor Stuart Hall Building, LG01 London SE14 6NW DETAILS In this third edition of Defending Human Rights in a Digital Age participants and audience will discuss how human rights activism can impact on the technical standards that govern internet design and its day-to-day running. These decisions take place behind the screen in organizations such as the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF), or the World Wide Web Consortium (WC3). Panellists will focus on ICANN for the most part, the US-incorporated entity that controls the Domain Name System that is a cornerstone of how the internet works, and people find their way around the web. ICANN has just completed its transition to a “privatized, multistakeholder" governance structure. At the same time activists have been developing a range of human rights agendas from within the organization's various working groups. The aim of this debate is to introduce these architects of the internet to a Goldsmiths audience; to discuss how human rights matter for what they do. Speakers will discuss questions such as: * Should human rights advocates get involved in the technical organizations that run the internet? * If so, how can lay-people make a difference in these expert-based settings? * What does it take to make human rights law and norms work for technical standards? * What sorts of skill and knowledge are needed to be able to have an impact? Affective Politics of Social Media Symposium

Dear all, CFP is now out for the Affective Politics of Social Media Symposium held in Turku, Finland, October 12-13, the week before IR17! Confirmed keynote speakers: Crystal Abidin (Jönköping University / Curtin University), Kath Albury (Swinburne University of Technology), Nancy Baym (Microsoft Research New England) and Ben Light (University of Salford) >From clickbaits to fake news, heated Facebook exchanges, viral Twitter messages and Tinder swipes, the landscape of social media is rife with affective intensities of varying speeds and lengths. Affect, as the capacity to relate, impress and be impressed, creates dynamic connections between human and nonhuman bodies. Zooming in on these connections, their intensities, rhythms, and trajectories in the context of networked communications, Affective Politics of Social Media asks how affect circulates, generates value, fuels political action, feeds conflict and reconfigures the categories of gender, sexuality and race through and across social media platforms. Multiple analytical avenues have already been laid out for doing this, from Jodi Dean’s examination of affect and drive to Tarleton Gillespie’s analysis of the politics of platforms, Adi Kuntsman’s examination of “webs of hate” and Zizi Papacharissi’s discussion of affective publics as contagious articulations of feeling that bring forth more or less temporary sense of community and connection. Building on a growing body of work on “networked affect”, this two-day symposium features keynotes exploring the affective labour of social media influencers, the automation and quantification of the intimate, the netiquette of hook-up apps and the dynamics of music stardom and fandom, and invites contributions connected to affect and social media in relation to • collective action and political activism • sexual cultures and practices • harassment, hate and resistance • affective rhythms, intensities and investments • popular culture and everyday life In order to facilitate participation, the symposium has no registration fee but pre-registrations are required.
