Whilst appearing oxymoronic, distracted modes of engagement have invited the coining of such terms as ‘flickering man’, ‘continuous partial attention’ and ‘ambient awareness.’ One’s engagement in social media (however distracted) is also routinely measured. Klout scores and similar are often called ‘vanity metrics’ because they measure success or ’success theater’ in social media. The notion of vanity metrics implies at least three projects: a critique of metrics concerning both the object of measurement as well as their capacity to measure unobtrusively or only to encourage performance. The second is a corrective interface project, for users are continually distracted by number badges calling to be clicked; there is a movement afoot (initiated by John Seely Brown) for so-called ‘encalming technology’. The talk, however, focuses on the third project, i.e., how one may rework the metrics. In all, I make four moves. In an application of digital methods, which seeks to repurpose online devices and their methods for social research, I propose to repurpose Klout scores and other (media monitoring) engagement measures for social research. Building upon ‘alt metrics’ for science, an alternative metrics project, I propose another one, albeit for social issue spaces rather than for science. In order to do so, I call for a change in the networks under study by social researchers, that is, a shift from the social network (with its vanity metrics) to the issue network. The change of networks (so to speak) enables concentrating on the opportunities for an alternative metrics for the social (together with social issue engagement), which I call critical analytics. Critical analytics would seek to measure the ‘otherwise engaged,’ or other modes of engagement (than vanity) such as dominant voice, concern, commitment, positioning and alignment, thereby furnishing digital methods with a conceptual and applied research agenda concerning online metrics. Capturing an audience and making a living has become increasingly difficult for indie developers, placing many in positions of economic and cultural precarity. In addition to the considerable labour of making games, to have a hope of success, developers must be constantly hustling and managing relationships with networks of other developers, players, and industry actors, as well as within their own teams. In this perilous environment, entrepreneurial and business acumen is of equal if not greater importance as creative vision and technical skill. Contrary to the romantic indie auteurism exemplified by Indie Game: The Movie, in the contemporary indie gaming ecosystem, press, curators, and popular influencers, publishers, platform holders, government agencies, community organizations, co-working hubs, festivals, and other institutional actors play a crucial role. These intermediaries, brokers, coordinators, and maintainers do not primarily make or consume games; rather they “interface” between different sectors of the game industry and gaming culture, producing or extracting value and exerting a structuring influence on the field. These aspects of indie game development elude analysis; they are rarely acknowledged and difficult for outsiders to perceive. The “Indie Interfaces” symposium seeks to redress this by examining the largely invisible labour and social-material scaffolding that enables and sustains indie game development. “Indie Interfaces” is an intimate industry-academic symposium designed to facilitate knowledge exchange between academics and influential actors working in the field of indie games. Held in Montréal, a city renowned for its diverse and vibrant game development communities, this pathbreaking event will combine roundtable discussions among industry attendees and academic research presentations to foster productive, critical dialogue and collaboration. Moving beyond definitional debates about what counts as indie, this symposium is intended to stimulate innovative, interdisciplinary academic work that can feed forward into game industry practices. We are seeking submissions from academics doing research on indie games (defined broadly), with a specific focus on the actors, objects, and processes that scaffold independent game production, distribution, and consumption. All proposals are welcome, including those that engage the following topics and approaches: * Cultural intermediation and brokerage in and around indie games; * Maintaining, curating, and mediating games scenes and communities; * Indie career paths, precarity, venture labour, and gig economies; * Indie games and cultural/economic policy; * Geographies of indie game development (local, regional, transnational); * Economic and cultural sustainability in indie game development; * Collaborative workspaces and creative communities; * Ethnographic Studio/Production Studies of both development and community organizations; * “Above” and “below the line” labour in indie game development; * Indie game festivals, conventions, showcases, and exhibitions; * Analyses of indie game distribution, consumption, and reception; * Labour advocacy and organization in and around the games industry; * Entrepreneurship and innovation in indie games; * Political and cultural economies of indie games; * Analyses of gendered labour in and around indie games; * Affective, emotional, and relational labour; Comparisons to film, music, and other forms of independent cultural production. However, these state-of-the-art algorithms are typically applied in relatively straightforward scenarios. In reality, recommendation is often a more complex problem: it is usually just a single step in the user's more complex background need. These background needs can often place a variety of constraints on which recommendations are interesting to the user and when they are appropriate. However, relatively little research has been done on these complex recommendation scenarios. The ComplexRec 2017 workshop aims to address this by providing an interactive venue for discussing approaches to recommendation in complex scenarios that have no simple one-size-fits-all solution. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite original contributions about recommendation in complex scenarios. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Task-based recommendation -- Approaches that take the user's background tasks and needs into account when generating recommendations * Feature-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting, capturing and integrating rich information about user preferences for specific product features * Constraint-based recommendation -- Approaches that successfully combine state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms with complex knowledge-based or constraint-based optimization * Query-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting and incorporating rich information about the user's recommendation need (e.g., need for accessibility, engagement, socio-cultural values, familiarity, etc.) in addition to the standard user preference information * Interactive recommendation -- Techniques for successfully capturing, weighting, and integrating continuous user feedback into recommender systems, both in situations of sparse and rich user interaction * Context-aware recommendation -- Methods for the extraction and integration of complex contextual signals for recommendation * Complex data sources -- Approaches to dealing with complex data sources and how to infer user preferences from these sources * Evaluation & validation -- Approaches to the evaluation and validation of recommendation in complex scenarios ----------- Submissions ----------- We encourage authors to submit short papers and position papers of 2-4 pages in length dedicated to any aspect of recommendation in complex scenarios. Accepted submissions will then be invited for short 10-minute presentations with equal time for discussion. Deadline is not under our control. ----------------------------- Social Media and Communities -- a "mini-track" at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, (HICSS-51) January 3-6, 2018, Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hawaii Full paper submission deadline, June 15 We call for papers that address social networks and communities supported and/or complemented by social media for work, learning, socializing, economic and/or political processes, and/or that address theory, design, practices, use or evaluation of such social media use. ‘Communities’ is taken in a broad sense, including communities of practice, epistemic communities, or communities of inquiry, as well as fully virtual communities, and social media use that supports or complements geographically based community.
