UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA FACULTY OF EDUCATION New Media and Learning Technologies in Education (tenure-track Instructor) The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track educational leadership position at the rank of Instructor in New Media and Learning Technologies in Education. The appointment is expected to commence January 1, 2018 (or as negotiated with the successful candidate). The workload for a tenure-track Instructor includes a teaching assignment of courses scheduled over the academic year in combination with significant educational leadership opportunities, such as curriculum development and innovation. The academic appointment as Instructor will be to one of the four Departments with the best fit in the Faculty of Education. Although primary teaching and educational leadership responsibilities will be within the Master of Educational Technology (MET) program, it is expected that the candidate will also teach one course within their home department. Applicants will have an earned doctoral degree with expertise in New Media and Learning Technologies (or related fields) and experience with post-secondary online teaching and learning, ideally with experience in schools or other informal learning environments; and demonstrated experience with a wide range of educational technologies, applied instructional strategies, and instructional design of online learning. Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications: (a) interdisciplinary interests and experience in new media practices and pedagogy, with an emphasis on the crafts, theories, and technologies as utilized by and relevant to the design of formal and informal online, networked learning spaces; (b) evidence of potential to contribute to academic knowledge in New Media and Learning Technologies (c) evidence of expertise and experience required to contribute to competitively-adjudicated Educational Innovation grant-funded projects; (d) commitments to decolonizing, reconciliation, anti-racist, and social justice approaches to teaching and learning; (e) demonstrated leadership in educational, school, and/or academic contexts. Louisa is Assistant Professor of Film and Media Culture at Middlebury College, where she teaches classes on remix culture, spectatorship, YouTube, and gender and sexuality in media. Louisa is author of *Millennial Fandom: Television Audiences in the Transmedia Age* (2015), and co-editor of *Sherlock and Transmedia Fandom* (2012) and *Teen Television: Programming and Fandom* (2008). The event will also feature a plenary address from Professor Matt Hills, who, due to being the keynote of the first ever FSN conference, will reflect on the past five years of the network and the fan studies field. Matt is Professor of Media and Journalism at the University of Huddersfield, where he is co-director of the Centre for Participatory Culture. He has written six sole-authored research monographs, starting with the influential *Fan Cultures* in 2002 and most recently with *Doctor Who: The Unfolding Event* in 2015, as well as publishing more than a hundred book chapters and journal articles in the areas of media fandom, cult film/TV and audiences in the digital era. Second Call for Papers Workshop: Regional conflicts and contested spatial identities in the digital sphere 3-4 November 2017, Erlangen, Germany Organizers: Georg Glasze, Christian Bittner and Elad Segev Social identity often plays a major role in settings of regional conflicts. Hegemonic actors or majority groups promote narratives that justify claims on territory, natural resources or simply political power. Marginalized groups are mobilized through counter narratives of being a community of fate, sharing a common history, destiny and cultural heritage. In these struggles, influence upon and access to communication media constitutes a vital strategic value. These relationships can be witnessed in manifold regional conflicts, be it in Israel/Palestine, in Ukraine, the Kashmir region, Western Sahara, Catalonia, etc. Digital communication technologies have created new opportunities for information flows across borders and social groups of all kinds and scales. Online platforms are employed for participation, empowerment, and emancipation of marginalized groups, providing new actors with the ability to articulate their perspectives and reach a wider audience. Together with social inclusion, there are various patterns of communication exclusion, such as language bubbles, content filters, demographic biases, skill levels, governmental restrictions, or the unequal distribution of net infrastructures. While acknowledging the empowering potential of the internet, new studies emphasize also the (re)production and manifestation of uneven power structures and societal hierarchies through and within the internet. These multifaceted inclusion/exclusion mechanisms can be summarized under the umbrella term of digital divide(s). Within these heterogeneous socio-technological constellations, we want to assess the transformative potential of the internet for contested spatial identities in the settings of regional conflicts. How are conflicting identities negotiated in the digital sphere? To what extend are marginalized voices and perspectives being articulated through digital communication technologies? What strategies do traditional gatekeepers and hegemonic actors pursue to maintain their privileged speaker positions? What is the role of digital divides or state restrictions on digital communication infrastructures? The proposed workshop wants to bring together international scholars from various academic disciplines who are involved in critical research on online-negotiations of spatial identities in the context of regional conflicts. It aspires an assessment and systematization of the various dimensions of collective identity formation in the internet as well as fruitful exchange on methodological aspects of online and offline research in the thematic field. Specific topics through which presentations may interrogate the relationship between regional conflicts, spatial identities and the digital sphere include but are not limited to: · Social media platforms as means for the articulation of spatial identities · Implications of the digital sphere for activism, anti-geopolitics, peace movements and subaltern articulations · Involvements of nation state-actors in digital negotiations of spatial identities · The role of infrastructures for enabling, precluding and surveilling digital communication · Strategies of diaspora communities and the digital formation of spatial identities · Transformations of speaker positions and power relations within identity groups through digital technologies · Exclusion mechanisms such as digital divides or internet restrictions The workshop will take place at the Institute for Geography, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, 3.-4. Apologies for cross-posting! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- *Call for Papers* Adoption and Acceptance of eHealth: Beyond the current state-of-the-art A workshop, held in conjunction with INTERACT 2017 in Mumbai, India www.interactehealth.com 25th - 26th September, 2017 Workshop topic: The main approach taken in adoption and acceptance studies of interactive health technologies mainly follows a quantitative approach, often based on theoretical approaches such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) or the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Such studies mostly focus on a few, abstract factors, such as ease of use or perceived usefulness presuming a linear process of acceptance, but fail to give an in-depth overview of what exactly speeds up adoption and acceptance within a real-life context, also on the long term. In all, studies that show how different types of users with different needs and expectations make use of these technologies in specific healthcare contexts are crucial to inform the design of new interactive health technologies and their implementation strategies. The objective of this workshop is to discuss where we are today on the adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies and from this position, define a roadmap to push this field forward. Call for papers: The aim of this one-day workshop is to bring together researchers from both industry and academia to discuss best practices as well as pitfalls of adoption and acceptance of interactive technologies in healthcare and to provide the Interact community with guidelines to inform future developments and implementation of their interactive health systems. We welcome multi-disciplinary contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with interactive health technologies (e.g. engineering, computer sciences, (interactive) design, sociology, anthropology, psychology, neurosciences, cognitive sciences, communication science, cultural studies, nursing, fine and media arts, and law, etc.). -------------------------------- Call for Papers The Mutual Shaping of Human-Robot Interaction A workshop, held in conjunction with IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (IEEE RO-MAN 2017) in Lisbon, Portugal, workshop day September 1, 2017. www.mutualshapinghri.com ---------------------------------- **Submission Deadline: June 21, 2017** Workshop topic The field of robotics has rapidly advanced over the last decades and shown great promises in different fields. After robots were introduced in industry decades ago, advancements in robotic systems have enabled them to increasingly enter and affect our everyday lives. Nowadays, we see robotic systems being introduced as assistants, team-mates, care-takers, and companions, in diverse contexts such as education, health and eldercare, the home, and in search and rescue. This development has started the discussion on the emotional, ethical and societal consequences of the increasing confrontations and interactions between humans and robots. Studies in human-robot interaction have shown that, when robots enter different contexts of our everyday lives, they can influence and change that particular context beyond its intended use purpose alone. The term mutual shaping explains the detailed process of technological design suggesting that society and technology are not mutually exclusive to one another and, instead, influence and shape each other. Society changes as a direct result of the implementation of technology that has been created based on society’s wants and needs. The mutual shaping of technology and society approach focuses on analyzing how social and cultural factors influence the way technologies are designed, used, and evaluated, as well as how technologies affect our construction of social values and meanings. The decisions made in the design, adoption, use, and evaluation process affect human’s attitudes towards, uses of, and even their conceptualizations of these (socially) interactive systems. Social norms, values and morals are both implicitly and explicitly intertwined with technologies, reinforcing or altering our beliefs and practices. Once a robot has entered a social environment, it will alter the distribution of responsibilities and roles within that environment, including how people act in that situation or use context. Accordingly, studies that show how use practices of robot systems and the social environment mutually shape each other, and what forms this mutual shaping process takes, is crucial for the future development of robots for broad societal use. This knowledge is required to inform the design and acceptance of new and existing robot systems. Call for papers The aim of this workshop is to inform the robotics community and its many stakeholders about lessons learned so far about the mutual shaping of robots and society. We will focus on how social factors affect whether people choose to use robots, and how robot design factors affect the social contexts in which robots are used. We welcome prospective participants to submit extended abstracts (max. 4 pages including references) covering any relevant topic contributing to the discussion on the mutual shaping effect (s) of robots and society. The goal is to discuss a wide variety of contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with the development and evaluation of robot systems (e.g. Human-Human Interaction, Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Robot Interaction, Human Factors User-Experience, engineering, computer sciences, (interactive) design, sociology, anthropology, psychology, etc.). Key issues to be discussed include: * What are the newly emerging digital and mobile communication practices among Chinese diasporas and how do they impact on their social and political life in their host countries; * To what extent do these digital practices create new forms of civic engagement and enable Chinese migrant communities to participate in public life in their host city/country; * What are political, social and economic impacts of their flexible place-making practices via digital and mobile platforms among the Chinese diaspora (such as the widespread use of WeChat) on their host countries and societies—both opportunities and challenges? Existing scholarship on Chinese diaspora and diaspora media has focused on how the Chinese diaspora use various media and communication platforms and networks to maintain connections to the “Motherland” and to reconstitute the home abroad. Recent work has traced new developments in diaspora Chinese media, updated the current landscape of diasporic Chinese media and communication (particularly with the proliferation of digital platforms and new modes of communication), and documented the impact of China’s soft power initiatives and “going global” policy. It has also pointed to a new, and seemingly intractable, tension: the emergence of stronger links between new migrants in the diaspora and China in on the one hand, and a continuous desire for a global, postmodern and hybrid Chinese diasporic identity, on the other. This tension is played out in the process of media production, circulation, and consumption, and it manifests itself most acutely through individual digital media practices in the cyberspace and on mobile devices. This panel takes a critical look at Chinese digital diaspora’s embodied and emplaced media and cultural practices mediated via social/digital media, as they negotiate their transcultural, transnational and yet geo-local identity, networks, relationships, and politics. We call for papers that will examine everyday patterns and strategies, sacrifices, and ingenuity of Chinese digital diaspora of various human variables (age, gender, sexuality, class, ethnicity, race, disability, and linguistics), as they live out the cosmopolitan identity and lifestyle through both online and offline encounters with real people. We encourage critical analyses of social inclusion/exclusion and power relations embedded in place-making practices of Chinese digital diaspora and how such digitally mediated place-making practices impact on their citizenship accumulation and sociopolitical life in their host countries and communities. It is our hope that papers in this panel will update our understanding of the Chinese digital diaspora in the era of China’s rise, contribute to the theorization on flexible and digital citizenship, and above all, draw out real and potential implications of these insights on Australian, New Zealand and other host countries’ public life, especially in regard to the national aims of strengthening democracy, building cohesion in a multicultural society, and developing cultural, trade and economic relations with China.
