*New media, old inequalities: Approaching youth, creative politics and digital media across social class, gender and geography* Dr Shakuntala Banaji, London School of Economics Monday 9th October, 4.15 – 5.30pm (followed by book launch & drinks reception), LT4 The Diamond, University of Sheffield Over the past seventeen years my research around young people, politics and creativity has interrogated the role and affordances of new and emerging digital media in processes of social change. From refugee children connecting with their peers across Europe through ICQ chat in 2002, through youth activists in Europe and India deploying social media in politically progressive or retrograde ways, to young female gamers in the MENA region selectively hiding and revealing their gender via avatars and play talk during MMOGs, one common thread has been the ways in which digital media creates spaces for new politics and new agencies whilst also hiding or entrenching structural inequalities. But to what extent are we simply doing the digital wrong? Could its technical affordances be used to overcome systematic hierarchies, at least online? Do its social affordances simply enhance the agency of particular social classes in the global south? And are there ways in which the narrative of the digital in liberation politics has become yet another enemy of those seeking deeper social structural transformation? She is Programme Director for the Master’s in Media, Communication & Development and teaches about world cinema, audiences, international media and the global south. She is Principal Investigator on the ‘Personalised Media and Participatory Culture’ project and UK project director for the Horizon 2020 CATCH-EyoU project. Ongoing research addresses the intersection between socio-political contexts, old and emerging media, identities and participation, with a focus on the lives of children and young people in different geographical and class contexts. Hi folks, I’m updating an undergrad Gender and Sexuality Studies course (so, basically, all readings need to be from a slant of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, or location). It’s going from undergraduate live to online graduate-level. Any suggestions for important theoretical readings from these lenses? Films include: Johnny Mnemonic, Nerve, Terms and Conditions May Apply, Ex-Machina and She. Fiction include cyberpunk and IRL by Doctorow and Wang. Last year, I initiated together with some good people Techfestival Copenhagen (techfestival.co), which this year is going to take place from September 5th to 10th in the central Meatpacking District – and I thought this could be of interest to some of you. The aspiration is “real talk” on technology and society and there is a tons of interesting stuff going on during the day and in the evening (talks, summits, meetups, concerts, exhibitions…) on subjects such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, food technology and more. Slightly odd request for research on vlogging

Hi my name is Sophie, I am a 3rd year PhD Student at University of East London in the department of Arts and Digital Industries. My research is looking at the (highly gendered) space of vlogging (video blogging) on YouTube, focusing on the mythology of vlogging as an entrepreneurial pursuit, or as a pathway to creative industries in the UK. As part of my field work I would *love *to go to the YouTube Space in London. As many will probably know, this is a massive studio space run by Google, that holds workshops, training sessions and provides studio space for the UK's vlogging elite. As part of the 'elite' nature of this resource, you need 1000 subscribers (or followers) to even set foot in the door and attend an event (you need 10,000 subscribers and 100,000 respectively for most of the resources). Any suggestions or contact introductions would be incredibly helpful. I have contacted YouTube through any channel that is advertised, drained any Google adjacent contacts I have and even walked into the Space to realise there is no reception desk and it's all basically automated. So, as someone who has no institutional or network links to Google, the only creative and roundabout way I can think of right now is to get 1000 subscribers on my YouTube Channel. I don't have the time (or the content) to actually build my subscriber base to this level so I am asking the kindly space of AoIR if you would consider subscribing to the channel. I do not need you to watch my content, or find me interesting in any way, this is purely an access issue (the things you do for access!). I don't make many videos so it shouldn't bother you. Our daily lives and activities take place in digital media; information provision is highly personalized; decision-making is guided (automated) by the use of algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence; personal information is traded on the information market by platforms and data brokers; and surveillance, in many forms, is increasingly pervading both the public-facing and more intimate aspects of our daily lives. In the 2018 edition of IER, we seek proposals that approach these interconnections and interdependencies through the lens of information ethics (writ large, to include those working in multiple fields and with differing methods). The Information Ethics Roundtable (held annually since 2003) is a yearly conference that brings together researchers from disciplines such as philosophy, information science, communications, public administration, anthropology, and law to discuss ethical issues such as information privacy, intellectual property, intellectual freedom, and censorship. Proposals for IER 2018 should be situated within the general field of information ethics (although participants are expected to come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds) and, ideally, should connect two or more of the following areas of inquiry: - Surveillance, privacy, and/or data protection  - Algorithms, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence (AI) - Digital culture, digital media, social media, and/or other forms of digital media (non-)use  *Proposal requirements* We invite two types of proposals: (1) Papers: please submit a 500-word abstract of your paper. If accepted, you are expected to submit a full paper prior to the Roundtable, and you will be presenting the paper at the conference. The paper will not be stored in a public repository or published in proceedings. (2) Panels: please submit a 1500-word description of your panel. The conference invites participants to think through the interplay of media and data in respect of the way social time is constructed, modulated, and experienced. This allows to appreciate how new technologies and representations deeply affect the temporal organization of today’s media suffused societies, and it also sheds light on transformations in mediating time. We assume that mediatization as a fundamental societal change that interweaves with the development and spread of communication and information technologies leaves its mark on the ways we process and order the pace, sequence, rhythms and of social reality.
