by Yosem Companys 18 Nov '18

18 Nov '18

From: Kurtis Heimerl <kheimerl(a)cs.washington.edu> Apologies for the wide posting but I feel like these lists have the kind of people we're looking for! Feel free to forward on if there are other communities that could be interested. ***** The ICTD Research Group at the University of Washington’s Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering (http://ictd.cs.washington.edu/) is seeking qualified students, both from the US and abroad, with an interest in universal internet access and community networking to apply to the PhD program in computer networking. The ICTD group, led by Professors Kurtis Heimerl and Richard Anderson, has long worked on the problems of Universal Internet Access internationally, with deployments and projects in both the rural Philippines (in partnership with the University of the Philippines) and Indonesia (in partnership with Ob Anggen). As our research shifts to wide-area LTE networks and the infrastructure of repair, we want to find more motivated and passionate students with interest and capacity in the space. There is a particular interest in students with personal experience with hard connectivity problems. If interested, please visit the UWCSE admissions page (https://www.cs.washington.edu/academics/phd) All students admitted to the Allen School Ph.D. program are guaranteed funding for 3 years in the form of a research assistantship, teaching assistantship or fellowship. All or most of the cost of tuition is covered by the assistantship or fellowship. If you have any questions, please direct them to Professor Kurtis Heimerl <kheimerl(a)cs.washington.edu>. A little about the University of Washington’s Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering: Consistently ranked among the top computer science programs in the world, the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering educates tomorrow's innovators and engages in research that advances core and emerging areas of the field. We also lead a broad range of multi-disciplinary initiatives that demonstrate the transformative power of computing and are nationally recognized for our success in promoting diversity. We are located in the spectacular Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering at the heart of the University of Washington campus in Seattle — a center of innovation in software, life sciences, global health, aerospace, and many other fields — where Allen School faculty, students, and alumni are making an impact and changing the world. -- Public Key: https://flowcrypt.com/pub/kheimerl@cs.washington.edu

Call for Proposals- Privacy Camp 2019: Platforms, Politics, Participation
by Imge Ozcan 16 Nov '18

16 Nov '18

*Privacy Camp 2019: Platforms, Politics, Participation* Privacy Camp will take place on 29 January 2019 in Brussels, Belgium, just before the start of the CPDP conference. Privacy Camp brings together civil society, policy-makers and academia to discuss existing and looming problems for human rights in the digital environment. Call for Proposals: Platforms, Politics, Participation Privacy Camp 2019 will focus on digital platforms, their societal impact and political significance. Due to the rise of a few powerful companies such as Uber, Facebook, Amazon or Google, the term “platform” has moved beyond its initial computational meaning of technological architecture and has come to be understood as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Platforms are said to facilitate and shape human interactions, thus becoming important economic and political actors. While the companies offering platform services are increasingly the target of regulative action, they are also considered as allies of national and supranational institutions in enforcing policies voluntarily and gauging political interest and support. Digital platforms employ business models that rely on the collection of large amounts of data and the use of advanced algorithms, which raise concerns about their surveillance potential and their impact on political events. Increasingly rooted in the daily life of many individuals, platforms monetise social interactions and turn to questionable labor practices. Many sectors and social practices are being “platformised”, from public health to security, from news to entertainment services. Lately, some scholars have conceptualised this phenomenon as “platform capitalism” or “platform society”. Privacy Camp 2019 will unpack the implications of “platformisation” for the socio-political fabric, human rights and policy making. In particular, how does the platform logic shape our experiences and the world we live in? How do institutional actors attempt to regulate platforms? In what ways do the affordances and constraints of platforms shape how people share and make use of their data? Participate! We welcome panel proposals relating to the broad theme of platforms. Besides classic panel proposals we are also seeking short contributions for our workshop “Situating Platforms: User Narratives”. 1. Panel proposals We are particularly interested in panel proposals on the following topics: platform economy and labour; algorithmic bias; democratic participation and social networks. Submission guidelines: · Indicate a clear objective for your session, i.e. what would be a good outcome for you? · Indicate other speakers that could participate in your panel (and let us know which speaker has already confirmed, at least in principle, to participate). · Make it as participative as possible, think about how to include the audience and diverse actors. Note that the average panel length is 75 minutes. · Send us a description of no more than 400 words. 2. “Situating Platforms: User Narratives” submissions In an effort to discuss situated contexts with regard to platforms, we will have a session on lived practices and user narratives. Individuals, civil society groups or community associations are welcome to contribute in the format of a short talk or show & tell demonstration. Details and the online submission form are here: https://framaforms.org/your-platform-story-1539768957 Deadline *The deadline for all submissions is 18 November*. After the deadline, we will review your submission and let you know by the end of November whether your proposal can be included in the programme. It is possible that we suggest merging panel proposals if they are very similar. Please send your proposal via email to privacycamp(at)edri.org! If you have questions, please contact Kirsten at kirsten.fiedler(at)edri(dot)org or Imge at imge.ozcan(at)vub(dot)be. The workshops provide a venue to discuss and explore emerging areas of User Modelling and Adaptive Hypermedia research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. In this edition, our goal is to have a balanced workshop program comprising different workshop formats and combining emerging and established research topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop schemas are possible, such as: · Working group meetings around a specific problem or topic; participants may be asked to submit a white paper or position statement. · Mini-conferences on specialized topics, having their own paper submission and review processes. · Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation. · Interactive discussion meetings focusing on subtopics of the UMAP general research topics. PROPOSAL FORMAT Workshop proposals should be submitted in PDF format to both workshop chairs, not exceeding 5 pages and organized as follows: · Workshop title and acronym. · Workshop chair(s), including affiliation, email address, homepage, and experiences in organizing such events. · Abstract (up to 300 words) and topics of interest. · Motivation on why the workshop is of particular interest at this time. · Workshop format, discussing the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussions. · Intended audience and expected number of participants. · List of (potential) members of the program committee (at least 50% have to be confirmed at the time of the proposal). · Requested duration (half day or full day). · When available, past editions of the workshop, including URLs, a brief statement on the development of the workshop series, e.g., in terms of topics, number of paper submissions and participants, post-workshop publications over the years and acceptance statistics. INSTRUCTIONS We encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit workshop proposals. Researchers interested in submitting a workshop proposal are invited to contact us in advance, so we can help to design successful proposals. In particular, for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats, we are happy to assist in further developing and implementing the ideas. We strongly suggest to have organizers from different institutions, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that may attract various types of contributions and may ensure rich interactions. The organizers of accepted workshops will prepare a workshop web site containing the call for papers and detailed information about the workshop organization and timeline. They will be responsible for their own publicity and reviewing processes. There will be a conference adjunct proceedings published by ACM where all the workshop papers will be published. Hence, the workshop organizers will need to adhere to the adjunct proceedings publication timeline. Data Feminism – open for public peer review
by Catherine D'Ignazio 16 Nov '18

16 Nov '18

Hello all - I'm co-author (with Lauren Klein of Georgia Tech) of the book *Data Feminism. *The book will be coming out in 2020 with MIT Press but we are doing an experiment with MIT's PubPub to open up the first draft for online, public peer review, and it's just gone live: https://bookbook.pubpub.org/data-feminism *Data Feminism* shows how feminist thinking can be applied to work towards more ethical and equitable data science and communication practices. It is oriented to a general audience and is driven by stories, cases and examples. The commenting period on PubPub is open until Jan 7th, 2019. We would be very thankful for this community's feedback. Short internet ethnography suggestions
by Eleanor Marchant 15 Nov '18

15 Nov '18

Hi Everyone! I have agreed to teach a guest lecture on ethnography for a friend's undergraduate research method course and I'm wondering if people in this group might have suggestions for a really great reading. I really want to give them a reading that is itself an ethnography (rather than being a piece about ethnography or how to do it), and that deals with some aspect of technology or internet and society, perhaps incorporating both online and offline ethnographic methods. Perferably something published in the last 8 years to keep it contemporary. I have tons of favorite ethnographic pieces in this vein, but the problem is most of them tend to be books and I don't think you can get a good feel for these works by just reading one chapter. So does anyone have suggestions about short readings, perhaps, a journal article, that fit the bill? Thanks in advance for any suggestions! I would suggest Jeff Lane's soon to be released ethnography "Digital Street" on young people in Harlem. An extensive online/offline ethnography based on five years of observations, dealing with poverty, gangs, violence, dating and more. https://amzn.to/2RYqamh He published a journal article, early observations that does a nice job of explaining the need for why ethnography of digital subjects needs offline components: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0002764215601711?journalCode=a… Keith > Message: 4 > Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2018 12:07:33 +0000 > From: Eleanor Marchant <eleanor.marchant(a)csls.ox.ac.uk> > To: aoir list <air-l(a)aoir.org> > Subject: [Air-L] Short internet ethnography suggestions > Message-ID: > < > CWXP265MB12700FCCE53BDCE7EC9D128C8EDC0(a)CWXP265MB1270.GBRP265.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM > > > > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > > Hi Everyone! > > I have agreed to teach a guest lecture on ethnography for a friend's > undergraduate research method course and I'm wondering if people in this > group might have suggestions for a really great reading.
