Call for abstracts: Vigilant Audiences: Understanding Scrutiny, Denunciations, and Shaming in Digital Media Use. https://www.eur.nl/en/eshcc/news/call-abstracts-vigilant-audiences (includes link to call PDF) We are seeking contributors for an open-access edited volume as well as a two-day workshop in October, on the topic of digital vigilante audiences. This proposed edited collection concerns media users in terms of their vigilant engagements with others. By looking at practices in which digital media users respond to individuals breaching legal and moral boundaries, we can better understand their motivations, but also the broader conceptual and societal implications of these practices. Today’s media landscape allows for scrutiny and intervention in the lives of others. Conventional outlets such as the press and reality television are supplemented and even supplanted by digital media users, who can report and comment on events through any number of mobile applications and other web-based platforms. They may denounce high-profile crimes, such as terrorism, sexual abuse, pedophilia, or participation in riots. They may also target comparatively benign transgressions such as petty theft, bad parking, or disorderly conduct (whether in embodied public spaces or online). In some cases, unaffiliated citizens may play a primary role in breaking a story, for example, by publishing footage of a criminal event to a public forum. In other cases they may respond to a story that broke through a public broadcaster, but shape the visibility and public perception of that story through vitriolic commentary, crowdsourced information about the perpetrator, among other practices. Contemporary media systems may be considered as hybrids (Chadwick 2013) in the sense that journalists and other media actors mobilise and in some cases even depend on their audiences, who play an active role in ‘making’ a story. While media scholars talk about news-making assemblages (ibid.), and criminologists talk about surveillant assemblages in the context of police scrutiny (Haggerty and Ericson 2000), we may consider the extent to which any single instance of user-involved vigilantism involves data flows that implicate both criminological and journalistic spheres. Vigilantism and shaming as social practices have long histories that predate digital media. Yet the adoption of services like Twitter, along with the popularity of populist social news platforms and the ubiquity of comment sections on news sites means that these practices are accessible to any user, and may have a lasting impact on the lives of those who have been targeted. Vigilant media use not only impacts the lives of those who have been denounced, but also may serve to discipline and otherwise govern over those who share categorical affiliations (on the basis of gender, ethnicity, sexual identity, political views, economic status, among others) and may fear negative repercussions. In other words, mediated vigilance and shaming may contribute to one’s own self-scrutiny, and may shape everyday practices and politics of visibility. Research on vigilante movements is typically concerned with the complexities and contradictions in relations between states and citizens: one the one hand, citizens seem to operate in excess of the state, yet they also share similar objectives (ex: ‘safe streets’) and hegemonic cultural values. This remains the case with digital media and digital vigilantism, and in addition the relations between media outlets and media users warrant conceptual and empirical attention. Contributions to this edited collection will address contemporary digital media practices involving users both consuming and participating in the denunciation of other individuals. We welcome scholarship engaged with a range of (cross-)disciplinary perspectives, including but not limited to sociology, criminology, cultural and media studies. Contributions are not limited to any national or regional context, and we are especially interested in cases and contexts that have not received prior scholarly attention. In particular, we seek chapters that make theoretical and empirical contributions in response to the following questions: - What role do audiences play in denunciatory media (ex: tabloid press; crime-based reality television; populist websites)? - How do the press portray user-led shaming practices? How might these representations vary according to social and political context? - In what ways do established and emerging mediated vigilante practices shape each other (ex: the relation between Twitter use and journalism, or between covering a shaming campaign and contributing to it)? - How might either traditional or entrepreneurial forms of populism (Fieschi and Heywood 2004) contribute to contemporary denunciatory practices? - What role might less visible media practices such as ‘listening’ or ‘lurking’ play in mediated shaming, notably in terms of scrutiny or in terms of composing imagined audiences? - What role do digital media (including mobile apps, social platforms and other web-based services) play in scrutiny and denunciation? - How might scrutiny and denunciatory practices either reinforce or contest categorical forms of discrimination and violence? - How might the public (whether in their role as audiences, educators, parents, guardians, etc.) modify their media use in response to (the possibility of) public scrutiny, denunciation and harassment? - What kinds of subject positions are typically invoked in the mediated representations of outrage (ex: the ‘failson’, diaosi, etc..) Contributing authors are also invited to participate in a two-day workshop on this topic in October, to be held in Rotterdam, NL. This will be an opportunity for authors to present their works in progress and receive constructive feedback. Modest funds will be able to partly support travel and accommodation for contributors. Final versions of chapters should be no longer than 7500 words, including references and notes. We intend to submit a full proposal to Open Book Publishers (https://www.openbookpublishers.com/) a nonprofit open-access publisher that has expressed an interest in this collection. We are currently seeking extended abstracts of approximately 800 words. This may include a time period for the analysis, geographic scope, phenomena that are either included or excluded in the analysis, or particular social spheres and their interrelations. 3) Method: Which theoretical approaches and empirical research methods are employed for answering the research questions and attaining the chapter’s task? 4) Results: What are the main results presented in the paper? 5) Conclusions: What are the main conclusions of the conducted research for concerned scholarly fields of study? 6) Recommendations: What are the main recommendations for scholarly research, as well as other concerned actors such as citizens, the press, digital media platforms and government branches?

Associate Professor or Professor (with tenure) Position Digital Literacies, Languages and Cultures The Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED), located in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Point Grey), invites applications for an Associate Professor or Professor with tenure in Digital Literacies, Languages and Cultures. This position will build on the Faculty of Education and UBC’s leadership in fields such as data visualization, network literacies, knowledge literacies, language technologies, learning analytics, and online education. The position is expected to commence July 1, 2018. The Department is seeking a scholar with a proven track record of excellence in Digital Literacies, Languages and Cultures, and a successful history of generating peer-reviewed funding and leading interdisciplinary groups. Applicants for this position should hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field. Leadership capabilities for directing a research cluster and for potential leadership of the Digital Literacy Centre would be of value. The successful applicant’s research and teaching interests and expertise may include but are not limited to: the application, development, and critical analysis of digital technologies and media in education; the impact of digitalization on literacies, language use and acquisition in learning processes; digital game studies, play, and creativity; game-based learning; immersive virtual environments; internet cultures; digital narratology and rhetoric; data visualization, mining, and big data; surveillance, copyright and IP; and Open Access / Source, digital publishing, and search engines. Call for papers - OBS* Special issue on The co-option of audience creativity on digital platforms Guest Editors: Ana Jorge (CECC-UCP), Inês Amaral (CECS/ISMT), David Mathieu (Roskilde University/ECREA Audiences and Reception Studies Section Chair) Submission deadline: 30th March 2018 Through its 3-year of activity, the Consortium on Emerging Directions in Audience Research (CEDAR), a network funded by the AHRC in the UK, has observed that the co-option of audiences by large, global players is becoming more intricate than previously. While a number of factors account for this development, the co-option of audiences is increasingly made possible by the appropriation of technology in the development of digital media platforms. These media are able to turn audience’s work and engagement into commodities for attracting attention, metrics to be sold to advertisers and business models (Andrejevic, 2009; van Dijck, 2013; Hearn & Schoenhoff, 2016). While user-generated content such as blogging or vlogging is a clear sign of audience agency, there is an increased tendency for that work to be co-opted by private and public media, hence leading to new forms of power imbalance between media and audiences. The co-option of audiences refers generally to the appropriation of audience labour, their ideas or the content of their productions, for one’s own purposes, be it by media and other organisations. But it also involves the process of gaining the audience’s agreement and consent in contributing to the objectives of the organisation and the establishing of new forms of relationship between audiences and platforms. On the other hand, audiences sometimes appreciate the recognition of their production by more established media or producers, such as fan communities. Hence, there is an important dialectic dimension in which co-option is negotiated, in which conflicts and tensions arise, and in which norms, rules and roles are redefined (Stehling et al., forthcoming). This topic has been discussed by political economy of communication and in particular of the web 2.0, focusing on the exploitation of audiences’ work as free labour (Andrejevic, 2009; Wasko, Murdock & Sousa, 2014; Fuchs & Sevignani, 2013), and by cultural studies through the notion of participation (Jenkins, 2006; Jenkins & Carpentier, 2013). However, Vesnić-Alujević and Murru (2016) claim the urgency of finding bridges between those perspectives. This special issue wishes to investigate the dialectic nature of co-option of audience creativity in blogging and vlogging platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram etc. Can the commodification of audience creativity and the emancipation it creates live side by side within the same model? When a YouTuber advertises a product, is the content different and does it entail different forms of communication to and from the audiences? How do popular and professional or semi-professional Youtubers, Instagrammers, etc negotiate the boundaries of their work and retain their integrity and authenticity? We invite contributions to answer these and other related questions by paying attention, amongst others, to: - the processes of produsage and co-creation of media content by the audiences within new practices of co-option by different kinds of power; - the commercialisation of “micro-celebrities”/“social media influencers” (in digital platforms as YouTube, blogs, Instagram and Facebook); - the use of algorithms and its impact on audience creativity; - the strategies deployed to encourage and orient (or block and prevent) the production of content that (dis)serves the interests of non-audience actors (owners, administrators, advertisers, etc.); - the processes and mechanisms of translation, such as datafication, metrification, by which audience creativity is co-opted; - the formation and negotiation of new business models throughout the co-option of audience labour; - the complex landscape of cross-interests and mutual influences between content users and producers; - the redefinition and negotiation of audience’s roles and relations with other actors. Call for Papers: The International Symposium on Media Innovations 2018 (ISMI18) Theme: Media Innovations and Good Lives Dear list members, we are pleased to announce that the seventh International Symposium on Media Innovations (ISMI18) will take place in Oslo, Norway on Friday 31st August and Saturday 1st September, 2018. Join us, along with a small group of international academic researchers and industry representatives, to discuss how innovations are developed in, influence, and transform contemporary media. We will discuss innovation and change in media technologies and services, organisational structures and management, and policies. We will also focus on questions relating to media production, journalism, media consumption and use. The theme for ISMI18 is ‘Media Innovations and Good Lives’. During our two-day event we will theorise media innovation and how this may relate, influence, and contribute to, living good lives in contemporary societies. At the same time, we will retain a focus on the presentation and discussion of empirical cases of media innovation in different organisations and contexts. We therefore welcome submissions that relate to the conference theme, such as: Media innovation and good lives; Media innovation and social transformation; Media innovation and ethical design; Media innovation and sustainable futures We also encourage submissions that relate to the broader field of media innovation research. The school will bring together a select group of academics (including grad students) and practitioners who care about promoting the responsible use of data and technology in democratic societies. And yet analyses and applications of those same data can do real harm. Algorithms used for setting bail can perpetuate racial biases. Calculations employed to improve the efficiency of postal delivery may divert already-scarce resources away from impoverished areas. Enhancing political engagement on social media platforms can promote misinformation, polarization, and distrust. And the list-unfortunately-goes on. How can we maximize the effectiveness of, and minimize potential harms resulting from, the use of data in contemporary democracies? One important answer is to bring more social science into our data practices. Social science perspectives permit a deeper understanding of the social and political processes that generate data-allowing us to more critically unpack what the data represent. And social science research can tell us a great deal about the likely effects of various applications resulting from data analysis. With this in mind, the Data in Democracy Summer School will bring together a select group of practitioners and academics for five days to learn about and apply crucial insights from the social sciences concerning the forms, functions, and impacts of data in democratic societies. Participants will receive a series of lectures with built-in practical exercises, engage in social and networking activities, and, on the final day, take part in a "hackathon" that capitalizes on participants' diverse backgrounds and experiences as they work together on a problem using real-world data. We are seeking participants from a wide range of fields and backgrounds, and we encourage anyone who holds at least a bachelor's degree (or equivalent work experience) and who works with quantitative data to apply. Call For Papers HICSS-52 Call for papers for the mini-track on: "COLLABORATION VIA SOCIAL MEDIA" Part of the Collaboration Systems and Technology Track of the Fifty-Second Annual Hawai'i International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS) Maui, HI - January 8-11, 2019 Papers are invited for the mini-track on "COLLABORATION VIA SOCIAL MEDIA" as part of the Collaboration Systems and Technology Track at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). Successful collaboration is often difficult and yet interactions on social media are accessible, pervasive, varied, and impactful. The role of social media as a collaboration technology and its impact of the effectiveness and overall success of collaboration must be studied. Collaboration technologies are a critical aspect of institutional and organizational processes that already face many pitfalls such distance between teams, dominance, lack of efficiency, lack of focus, overwhelming information, differing motivations, and groupthink. These aspects are only heightened when artificial elements like bots or other intelligent technologies are considered. The challenge for researchers and practitioners alike is understanding the impact of social media's unstructured and time-differentiated content delivery on collaborative processes, groups, and teams. This is a multi-dimensional challenge spanning technical, behavioral, social, emotional, economic, and political boundaries. This mini-track invites papers that addresses theoretical and practical challenges in assessing, staging, and deploying social media for collaboration within and between organizations, groups, teams, and machines. This mini-track provides one of the key international platforms on which the following issues can be discussed: 1. The impact of the unstructured, non-time-constrained nature of social media interactions on collaborative efforts. 2. Theoretical aspects of social media-facilitated collaboration. 3. User studies concentrating on collaborative social media platforms such as Tumblr, Slack, Trello, wikis, and others. 4. Theoretical approaches and designs of social media enabled collaboration processes, tools, and the frontiers of current knowledge and practice. 5. Processes, interventions, and techniques that focus social media technologies on collaborative problem solving. 6. Empirical studies or case studies that examine the use of social media as collaboration technology. 7. Social media's influence on decision making and collaboration. 8. Evaluation methods and metrics for assessing performance in social media-facilitated collaborative efforts. 9. Fostering collaboration via Social Media through incentive engineering. There are no preferred methodological stances for this mini-track: this mini-track is open to both qualitative and quantitative research, to research from a positivist, interpretivist, or critical perspective, to studies from the lab, from the field, or developmental in nature. Themes and topics of relevance to this mini-track include, but are not limited to (related topics not listed are welcome): Serious collaboration via social media * Theoretical foundations and design methodologies for using social media for productive collaboration * Studies examining how social media improves or degrades shared understanding and group decision-making * Best practices and patterns for social media based collaboration including: development, field experiences, laboratory evaluation of interventions that produce a predictable pattern of collaboration, etc. * The impact of social media on dispersed group processes * Incentives for collaboration, e.g. monetary, non-monetary incentives, in particular also gamification, feedback mechanisms or other techniques, systems and processes * Case studies for effective collaboration via social media Design approaches for social media-facilitated collaboration * Theories, guidelines and strategies for designing social media-facilitated collaboration processes, technologies and systems * Modeling techniques and frameworks to capture asynchronous collaborative interactions, facilitation, and information exchange in groups * Impact assessments of asynchronous communication on collaborative outcomes * Theoretical foundations of productivity, creativity, satisfaction, and other constructs relating to mission-critical tasks for which collaboration processes and systems must be designed * Proof of concept - examples of collaborative processes on social media like Facebook, Tumblr, Slack, Trello, wikis, or boutique collaboration platforms. There is a high degree of interaction and discussion among the conference participants because the conference is conducted in a workshop-like setting. Instructions for submitting papers: 1.
