Hi All, I’m hoping to put together a last minute panel on non-use for NCA. I’ve been doing a lot of work in this area the past few years and there are some really great people working on these ideas which I’d like to see get together at a venue like NCA. There is an affilaite organization, PPDD (Partnership for Progress on the Digital Divide) that is calling for submissions on this topic. Most of the work I’ve been doing critically interrogates the notion of a digital divide and centers around the right (or lack thereof) to refuse. As the deadline is wednesday, if you’re interested or already planning on being at NCA, please reach out to me ASAP and lets work something out. PPDD engages a broad diversity of individuals and organizations to spearhead a multi-associational, multi-disciplinary partnership among scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to make significant contributions in closing the digital divide and addressing the many other challenges and opportunities presented by the digital age. Fully interdisciplinary and international, PPDD is the only academic professional organization in the world focused solely on the digital divide and on connecting research to policymaking and practice to strategize actions and catalyze solutions to this pressing societal concern. All best (and apologies for cross-posting), Cornelius ***Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowships “Algorithmed Public Spheres” (Deadline: May 1st)*** SUMMARY: The Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for international postdoctoral research fellows who will conduct innovative research on the social and cultural impact of algorithms during stays of 3-12 months in Hamburg in the academic year 2018/2019. DESCRIPTION: The Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research is a publicly funded research institute that focuses on the study of mediated public communication. Its research encompasses both broadcast and digital communication from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. The postdoctoral research network Algorithmed Public Spheres ( https://aps.hans-bredow-institut.de/) has been established to study the relevance of algorithms for the constitution of the public sphere. We emphasize in particular the importance of algorithms for filtering, ranking and selecting media content and for structuring digital communication. In contrast to the use of data mining in areas such as healthcare, credit scoring and general business analytics, where such techniques have a long tradition, the impact of algorithms on the public sphere poses novel challenges. How are communication, media, and public discourse impacted by transferring the dominant logics of consumption from other industries to news, information, and political deliberation, implemented in social media platforms, search engines, and on news websites? How do we adapt as individuals as well as as a society to the growing prevalence of algorithmic systems? Research in this area could include: - Governance of and by algorithms - Algorithm awareness and algorithm literacy - Measurement of algorithmic bias and discrimination - Algorithms in news production, distribution and consumption processes - User interaction with and rationalization of algorithms We invite applications for international postdoctoral research fellows from fields including, but not restricted to, computer and information science, communication and media studies, law, political science, sociology and philosophy, who will conduct innovative research on the social and cultural impact of algorithms during stays of 3-12 months in Hamburg in the academic year 2018/2019. Dear colleagues, Members of AoIR and of the Air-L listserv who research any aspect of online conversation are invited to submit papers to HICSS, the 52nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) that will take place in the island of Maui, Hawaii in January 2019. The Mediated Conversation minitrack focuses on research of conversations taking place on digital and social media. Conversations are at the core of human communication. Mediated conversations can use text, audio, images or video, or any combination thereof. The minitrack welcomes research on conversations that are interpersonal, as well as those that occur in organizational or mass communication, educational or political contexts, and in any other sphere of human activity. Some examples of highly cited papers that first appeared in this minitrack include: Beyond Microblogging: Conversation and Collaboration via Twitter, by Honey & Herring; Talk before You Type: Coordination in Wikipedia by Viégas, Wattenberg, Kriss and van Ham; You Are Who You Talk To: Detecting Roles in Usenet Newsgroups by Fisher, Smith and Welser; Tweet, Tweet, Retweet: Conversational Aspects of Retweeting on Twitter by boyd, Golder and Lotan; and, Learning Conversations in World of Warcraft by Nardi, Ly and Harris. This minitrack brings together researchers and innovators to explore mediated conversation and its implications; to raise new socio-technical, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic and social questions; and to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. The Mediated Conversation minitrack is the successor of the Persistent Conversation minitrack established by Tom Erickson and Susan Herring at HICSS in 1999, which was originally focused on the novelty of conversational persistence. With the prevalence of mediated conversation, we are called upon to consider a wider field of issues.
