For contemporary media studies in the so called age of social media, the role of data has never been more complex. At the inaugural CODE conference six years ago, a collective of digital media academics and creative practitioners were negotiating the rapid emergence of new platforms and devices, and exploring new approaches to theorising, researching and doing digital media. Under the banner of software studies, platform politics, and digital media practice, the first CODE conference interrogated the multifaceted nature of code itself. At that stage, we only had an inkling of the coming impact of algorithms, automation, natural language processing, machine learning and neural nets, and the new wave of artificial intelligence. The time has come to take stock of our data streams. And, in particular, to ask how the notion of code, both materially shaped and conceptually understood, helps to orient media studies in 2018. CODE: A Media Conference of Platforms, Devices and Screens is a two day event consisting of workshops, studios, industry panels and papers. There are lots of opportunities to participate but specifically now we are seeking short research snapshots or provocations of five minutes. We are keen to move away from the old broadcast model of conference format with its death by PowerPoint approach. Instead, we want to hear about research plans, projects, methods, tools or critical perspectives. Whether it's an idea looking for partners, or the report from a project just completed, we encourage you to submit your work. ** Apologies for cross-posting ** The Cultural Life of Machine Learning: An Incursion into Critical AI Studies Preconference Workshop, #AoIR2018<https://aoir.org/aoir2018/preconfwrkshop/> Montréal, Canada Urbanisation Culture Société Research Centre, INRS (Institut national de la recherche scientifique) Wednesday October 10th 2018 Deadline for Abstracts: June 30th 2018 *Extended Deadline*: July 7th 2018 Keynote: Orit Halpern (Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Concordia University) Machine learning (ML), deep neural networks, differentiable programming and related contemporary novelties in artificial intelligence (AI) are all leading to the development of an ambiguous yet efficient narrative promoting the dominance of a scientific field—as well as a ubiquitous business model. Indeed, AI is very much in full hype mode. For its advocates, it represents a ‘tsunami’ (Manning, 2015) or ‘revolution’ (Sejnowski, 2018)—terms indicative of a very performative and promotional, if not self-fulfilling, discourse. The question, then, is: how are the social sciences and humanities to dissect such a discourse and make sense of all its practical implications? So far, the literature on algorithms and algorithmic cultures has been keen to explore both their broad socio-economic, political and cultural repercussions, and the ways they relate to different disciplines, from sociology to communication and Internet studies. The crucial task ahead is understanding the specific ways by which the new challenges raised by ML and AI technologies affect this wider framework. This would imply not only closer collaboration among disciplines—including those of STS for instance—but also the development of new critical insights and perspectives. Thus a helpful and precise pre-conference workshop question could be: what is the best way to develop a fine-grained yet encompassing field under the name of Critical AI Studies? We propose to explore three regimes in which ML and 21st-century AI crystallize and come to justify their existence: (1) epistemology, (2) agency, and (3) governmentality—each of which generates new challenges as well as new directions for inquiries. In terms of epistemology, it is important to recognize that ML and AI are situated forms of knowledge production, and thus worthy of empirical examination (Pinch and Bijker, 1987). At present, we only have internal accounts of the historical development of the machine learning field, which increasingly reproduce a teleological story of its rise (Rosenblatt, 1958) and fall (Minsky and Papert 1968; Vapnik 1998) and rise (Hinton 2006), concluding with the diverse if as-yet unproven applications of deep learning. Especially problematic in this regard is our understanding of how these techniques are increasingly hybridized with large-scale training datasets, specialized graphics-processing hardware, and algorithmic calculus. The rationale behind contemporary ML finds its expression in a very specific laboratory culture (Forsythe 1993), with a specific ethos or model of “open science”. Models trained on the largest datasets of private corporations are thus made freely available, and subsequently détourned for the new AI’s semiotic environs of image, speech, and text—promising to make the epistemically recalcitrant landscapes of unruly and ‘unstructured’ data newly “manageable”. As the knowledge-production techniques of ML and AI move further into the fabric of everyday life, it creates a particularly new form of agency. Unlike the static, rule-based systems critiqued in a previous generation by Dreyfus (1972), modern AI models pragmatically unfold as a temporal flow of decontextualized classifications. What then does agency mean for machine learners (Mackenzie, 2017)? Performance in this particular case relates to the power of inferring and predicting outcomes (Burrell, 2016); new kinds of algorithmic control thus emerge at the junction of meaning-making and decision-making. The implications of this question are tangible, particularly as ML becomes more unsupervised and begins to impact on numerous aspects of daily life. Social media, for instance, are undergoing radical change, as insightful new actants come to populate the world: Echo translates your desires into Amazon purchases, and Facebook is now able to detect suicidal behaviours. In the general domain of work, too, these actants leave permanent traces—not only on repetitive tasks, but on the broader intellectual responsibility. Last but not least, the final regime to explore in this preconference workshop is governmentality. The politics of ML and AI are still largely to be outlined, and the question of power for these techniques remains largely unexplored. Governmentality refers specifically to how a field is organised—by whom, for what purposes, and through which means and discourses (Foucault, 1991). As stated above, ML and AI are based on a model of open science and innovation, in which public actors—such as governments and universities—are deeply implicated (Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff, 2000). One problem, however, is that while the algorithms themselves may be openly available, the datasets on which they rely for implementation are not—hence the massive advantages for private actors such as Google or Facebook who control the data, as well as the economic resources to attract the brightest students in the field. But there is more: this same open innovation model makes possible the manufacture of military AI with little regulatory oversight, as is the case for China, whose government is currently helping to fuel an AI arms race (Simonite 2017). What alternatives or counter-powers could be imagined in these circumstances? Could ethical considerations stand alone without a proper and fully developed critical approach to ML and AI? This workshop will try to address these pressing and interconnected issues. We welcome all submissions which might profitably connect with one or more of these three categories of epistemology, agency, and governmentality; but we welcome other theoretically and/or empirically rich contributions. Interested scholars should submit proposal abstracts, of approximately 250 words, by July 7th 2018 to CriticalAI2018 [at] gmail [dot] com. Proposals may represent works in progress, short position papers, or more developed research. The format of the workshop will focus on paper presentations and keynotes, with additional opportunities for group discussion and reflection. After years of exalting rhetoric praising the democratisation of public discourse with the diffusion of the internet, informed observers have sounded a note of alarm about the scope for the distortion of electoral processes in democratic countries. The Brexit campaign, along with recent elections in the US and France have been linked to disinformation, misinformation or propaganda campaigns seeking to strategically diffuse content that heightens partisanship and erodes the general trust in democratic institutions. In the run-up to the 2018 US mid-term elections, the aftermath of the Irish abortion referendum and the Italian general elections, this two-day symposium aims to address the topical question of how independent, ethical research on dis/misinformation in political communication can be conducted in a corporate environment that favours platform 'lockdowns' and the throttling of API access in response to the strategic use of data analytics, bots, trolls, fake news, and dis/misinformation operations in electoral politics, public information campaigns, and activist communication. What are the challenges for independent academic research examining these developments? How can researchers investigate disinformation in a context of narrowing access to trace data? How can these challenges be met, and what meaningful ways can be imagined for making social media platforms more accountable to the democratic constituencies where they operate? How is such disruptive communication designed, executed, with what effects and how are these measured? What data policies can be envisaged to strike a balance between safeguarding privacy and enabling academic research into the impact dis/misinformation or propaganda campaigns have on social media and beyond, in the attitudes and behaviours of their users? We encourage submissions that address but are not limited to the following aims: * reflect on the structural and contextual factors that have acted as fertile ground for dis/misinformation and propaganda; * determine the scope and intricacies of dis/misinformation and propaganda campaigns; * explore the relationship between dis/misinformation and the polarization of public opinion; * consider the weaponization of social media platforms and discuss the interdependencies among the vast plurality of newsmakers operating in the current hybrid media ecosystem; * reflect on the political, cultural or socio-economic costs of distortive communication, the relevance of such research to industry and public policy and the ethical implications attendant to such studies; * untangle technological design choices and ideological leanings that shape platform communication, enable dis/misinformation and propaganda and their bearing on independent research; * examine the implications for academic research of controlled access by private owners of data produced in public communication spaces such as the Facebook page of a political candidate, and methodological solutions for sustaining the investigation of these topics; * consider the changing social media research landscape as the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in May 2018; We invite 500-word abstracts outlining empirical, theoretical or policy-orientated papers that address these or cognate topics. At the same time, we see technology subject to increasing public commentary, political scrutiny and regulatory attention. As a result, existing (and proposed) regulatory and governance regimes place obligations on those who manage (process, use and collect) data; a high-profile example is the EU General Data Protection Regulation. In many cases, the end-users of applications have certain ‘rights’ that must be respected—and those developing, providing, offering and using technology bear various degrees of responsibility, which must be properly managed. Managing these rights and responsibilities is becoming increasingly complex, both technically and legally. Many of the challenges stem from the increasingly, composite, automated, dynamic and often opaque nature of technology and its supporting ecosystems. The challenges are set to increase, as computing becomes increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous, and as visions of smart cities and the IoT become a reality. Building on the successes of the previous workshops, CLaw 2018 aims to facilitate an interdisciplinary exploration of the technical and legal challenges as regards emerging technology, with a particular focus on its increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous nature. =========================================================== The key goal of this workshop is to stimulate a multidisciplinary discussion and new directions on these important issues. The scope of the conference includes the development and analysis of methods for discovering scientific knowledge, coming from machine learning, data mining, intelligent data analysis, big data analysis as well as their application in various scientific domains. We welcome papers that focus on the analysis of different types of massive and complex data, including structured, spatio-temporal and network data. We particularly welcome papers addressing applications. Finally, we would like to encourage contributions from the areas of computational scientific discovery, mining scientific data, computational creativity and discovery informatics. DS 2018 will be co-located with ISMIS 2018, the 24th International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems. The two conferences will be held in parallel, and will share their invited talks. TOPICS We invite submissions of research papers addressing all aspects of discovery science. We particularly welcome contributions that discuss the application of data analysis, data mining and other support techniques for scientific discovery including, but not limited to, biomedical, astronomical and other physics domains. Applications to massive, heterogeneous, continuous or imprecise data sets are of particular interests. Submitted papers may not have appeared in or be under consideration for another workshop, conference or a journal, nor may they be under review or submitted to another forum during the DS 2018 review process. The reviews are single-blind. You do not need to anonymize your submission. All best wishes, Amy Dobson and Tama Leaver *Digital Intimacies 4: Porousness & Permutations* *December 5**, 6 & 7, Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia* Digital Intimacies is now in its fourth year and continues to bring scholars of digital culture together from across Australia and beyond, across disciplines including media and communication, cultural studies, sociology, and gender studies. This year’s symposium is convened by Amy Dobson and Tama Leaver, and is hosted by Curtin University’s Centre for Culture and Technology and the discipline of Internet Studies in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry. As social media open up intimate lives and practices to public and semi-public gazes, we are in the midst of important cultural contestations over the meaning of intimacy. How intimacy plays out in, and in relation to, the digital has become a prominent concern in scholarship of digital cultures, as well as in broader public debate. Intimacy is generally understood as to do with the ‘personal’ and with ‘closeness’ — as describing feelings or relationships that are most ‘inward to one’s personhood’ (McGlotten, 2013). But, as much queer and social theory tells us, intimacy is also socially and culturally constructed and sanctioned, defined by institutions, laws, and social and cultural norms and practices. Norms around various kinds of intimacies and intimate practices involving media increasingly play out online, and via social media platforms. Digital platforms are structured by a ‘like’ economy (Gerlitz and Helmond, 2013), by drives towards the quantification of self (Lupton, 2016), and algorithms, as well as algorithmic ‘imaginaries’ (Bucher, 2018; Carah and Angus 2018). Digital intimacy has been described in this context as a new kind of social capital (Lambert, 2016), as well as new media ‘genre’ (Raun, 2018). Practices of certain kinds of intimacies via the digital are increasingly seen as vital to ‘successful’ and economically productive use of social media, especially for cultural intermediaries and ‘internet celebrities’ (Abidin, 2018). Simultaneously, many forms of intimacy and communication are being encoded, aggregated, analysed and commercialized as forms of big data, provoking difficult and unsettling questions about new forms of surveillance, influence, and control, as well as distinct lack of transparency around new practices and forms of governance, made publicly visible around recent Cambridge Analytica scandals (Andrejevic, 2013; Leaver, 2017). We are calling for paper abstracts on the themes of digital media, digital cultures, and intimacy, with particular interest in porousness and permutations of every kind; that is, papers that map the flow between boundaries – shifts and permeations of practice and understanding towards new forms, new configurations, and the unsettling existing norms in unexpected and as yet unnamed ways. Within these broadly understood boundaries of digital culture(s) and digital intimacies we invite particular exploration of: * how existing structures, boundaries and norms of intimacy are constituted, reconstituted and made porous in terms of identities, practices and platforms; * how practices of intimacy via the digital can be challenged, changed and new permutations emerge in terms of the social, cultural, and political; * how ‘digital disruption’ (of various sorts) shapes, configures, constitutes and impacts intimacy of every kind. The single stream symposium will formally run for two days, December 5 and 6.
