-------Apologies for crossposting--------- Dear Colleagues, Here comes the final reminder about the symposium organized by The Cultural Matters Group at the Department of Sociology, Uppsala University on Sept. 27-28 this year. The symposium is called Dis / Connection: Conflicts, Activism and Reciprocity Online and Beyond and we look forward to receiving your papers! Deadline for submissions is next week- June 18, 2018. The symposium focuses on a fundamental aspect of social relationships, namely the idea of connection. We invite abstract submissions on the possibilities of connectivity, but also the problems and promises of the act of disconnection. Digital networks embedded in everyday lives have transformed virtually every aspect of social life – from intimate relations with family and friends to the collective acts of digital activism. Digital relations and connections are our starting point for a broader discussion of notions of connectivity and how they are developing, failing, or simply being reproduced. Therefore, we also focus on the idea of disconnection as a voluntary act to take control over one’s use of digital technologies, as an act of resistance and of saying no to the opaque structures of power and control in the networked society. The goal is to further the discussion on the gains, costs and possibilities of ethical life in the culture of hyperconnectivity. The symposium also aims to address destructive functions of connected living, such as surveillance, trolls, selfies, fake news, fake news accusations, sexual harassment, click baiting, commercialism, terrorism, viruses, spam, and the colonization of private life. In other words, we are interested in how connectivity and disconnectivity can give rise to and facilitate social inclusion and democratic processes, as well as exclusion, isolation and conflict. Second call for applications: apply by 18.06.2018 The Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki invites applications for an enthusiastic and creative POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER <https://www.helsinki.fi/en/open-positions/postdoctoral-researcher-russia-me…> for a fixed term from 3rd of September 2018 to 30th of June 2019, to work within the project 'Russia MediaLab: Freedom of speech and critical journalism in Russia'. The employment contract will include a trial period of six months. If measured according to conventional parameters, freedom of speech and expression in Russia has deteriorated. However, such development is not uncontested and without contradictions. Instead, actions and measures taken can prove inefficient or have unintended outcomes, which can be either negative or positive in terms of freedom of speech. Likewise, freedom of speech can also unintentionally shrink due to reasons such as the strained economic situation or increasing commercialization. To formulate a fuller picture of freedom of speech in Russia today, it is therefore not enough to study measures of control and questions of implementation, but also to adopt the opposite perspective – that is, to study freedom of speech and expression from the perspective of the areas of relative freedom. According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess the teaching skills required for the position. The candidate should have a proven capability to publish in scientific journals, have excellent analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary scientific community. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent skills in written and oral English, as well as have a good command of Russian. The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. CfP: Exploring the Shifting Sands: Accounting for Evolution In Analyzing Data from Social Media Platforms Workshop http://www.socialmediaevolution.org/ AOIR 2018 – Montreal, Canada Oct 10th, 2017 We invite 1-page extended abstracts for participation in our workshop on social media data evolution at AoIR 2018. Researchers are drawn to the magnitude of social media data available today. Yet, social media are not static, often undergoing numerous changes to user interfaces, default settings, affordances, algorithms, policies, and APIs. While social media data has opened new opportunities in research, researchers often struggle with the question of contextualizing the evolution of the research site. Changing platforms and changing data structures can fix conclusions to narrow points in time. So how do we account for this 1) amalgamation of data, its 2) evolution, and 3) the impact platform and design changes have on the kinds of data sets produced and analyzed by researchers. The goal of this half-day workshop is to explore the problems of studying social media platforms and data while accounting for their evolution. Participants interested in attending the workshop should submit a 1-page extended abstract to platformevolutions(a)gmail.com by July 10th, 2018 (see important dates). Submissions will be evaluated by the Organizing Committee on the basis of quality and fit to the workshop theme. We will invite authors of a select portion of the abstracts to give a short presentations Abstracts should address some facet of social media platform evolution while conducting research. This might include (for example): + Creating histories of social media sites (SMS) evolution to contextualize SMS research. + Identifying open questions on how to account for biases in academic research arising from platform evolution. + State-of-the-art tools and methodologies that can help mitigate bias when studying evolving media platforms. + Identifying issues arising from reliance on historical data in rapidly evolving platforms. + Developing a theoretical basis or methodology to account for historical data. Ford Foundation - A call for research on digital infrastructure

Nearly all of this software is built on “digital infrastructure,” a foundation of free and public code that is designed to solve common challenges. Last year, I wrote about the importance of this surprisingly fragile but critical infrastructure [1], and the dangers in store when it fails. Now the Ford and Sloan foundations have come together to support a new wave of research exploring the economics, sustainability, and maintenance of this digital infrastructure [2] —with an eye to strengthening it in ways that benefit us all. We’re seeking research projects that explore questions like: * What makes an open source project “critical digital infrastructure”? * What role should private companies play in maintaining a stable ecosystem of open source technology? * What are barriers to diversity and inclusion in the field of digital infrastructure? * How can we better sustain the open source community that maintains digital infrastructure? In 2016, the Ford Foundation funded Nadia Eghbal’s report, “Roads and Bridges: The Unseen Labor Behind Our Digital Infrastructure.” In it, Eghbal described how the development and maintenance of digital infrastructure often falls to communities of volunteers who take it upon themselves to maintain this infrastructure in their own free time, and for little or no money. Unsurprisingly, this leads to significant risks to the open internet, and challenges in developing new, innovative research and businesses within it. If you’re interested in submitting a concept note, we encourage you to read Eghbal’s report, as we are primarily interested in the scope of digital infrastructure as she defines it there. But we’re also eager for your creative thinking, and hope you will use the questions above as inspiration for your own. We will accept concept notes until June 13, 2018. More info: https://blogit.itu.dk/ics2018/ After years of exalting rhetoric praising the democratisation of public discourse with the diffusion of the internet, informed observers have sounded a note of alarm about the scope for the distortion of electoral processes in democratic countries. The Brexit campaign, along with recent elections in the US and France have been linked to disinformation, misinformation or propaganda campaigns seeking to strategically diffuse content that heightens partisanship and erodes the general trust in democratic institutions. In the run-up to the 2018 US mid-term elections, the aftermath of the Irish abortion referendum and the Italian general elections, this two-day symposium aims to address the topical question of how independent, ethical research on dis/misinformation in political communication can be conducted in a corporate environment that favours platform 'lockdowns' and the throttling of API access in response to the strategic use of data analytics, bots, trolls, fake news, and dis/misinformation operations in electoral politics, public information campaigns, and activist communication. What are the challenges for independent academic research examining these developments? How can researchers investigate disinformation in a context of narrowing access to trace data? How can these challenges be met, and what meaningful ways can be imagined for making social media platforms more accountable to the democratic constituencies where they operate? How is such disruptive communication designed, executed, with what effects and how are these measured? What data policies can be envisaged to strike a balance between safeguarding privacy and enabling academic research into the impact dis/misinformation or propaganda campaigns have on social media and beyond, in the attitudes and behaviours of their users? We encourage submissions that address but are not limited to the following aims: * reflect on the structural and contextual factors that have acted as fertile ground for dis/misinformation and propaganda; * determine the scope and intricacies of dis/misinformation and propaganda campaigns; * explore the relationship between dis/misinformation and the polarization of public opinion; * consider the weaponization of social media platforms and discuss the interdependencies among the vast plurality of newsmakers operating in the current hybrid media ecosystem; * reflect on the political, cultural or socio-economic costs of distortive communication, the relevance of such research to industry and public policy and the ethical implications attendant to such studies; * untangle technological design choices and ideological leanings that shape platform communication, enable dis/misinformation and propaganda and their bearing on independent research; * examine the implications for academic research of controlled access by private owners of data produced in public communication spaces such as the Facebook page of a political candidate, and methodological solutions for sustaining the investigation of these topics; * consider the changing social media research landscape as the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in May 2018; We invite 500-word abstracts outlining empirical, theoretical or policy-orientated papers that address these or cognate topics. Abstracts should be accompanied by a 100-word biography of the presenter(s) together with contact details.
