Information disorder has been categorised into three types: (1) misinformation, an honest mistake in information sharing, (2) disinformation, deliberate spreading of inaccurate information, and (3) malinformation, accurate information that is intended to harm others, such as leaks. The spread of this information can play an important role in shaping public opinion, as well as the formation of public opinion can feed back into the production and sharing of information disorder. The challenges posed by online information disorder and its ability to shape public opinion has evoked the occurrence of important political phenomena of worldwide impact in recent events. This is the case of recent political events such as Brexit and Trump’s election, where social media played a significant role in shaping public opinion and issues now known as “fake news” and “post-truth” had an impact that is yet to be understood. It is a fact that social media is an excellent resource of mining all kind of information varying from opinions to actual facts. However, it is also fact that not all pieces of information are reliable and thus their truth is highly questionable. One such category of information types are rumours where the veracity level is not known at the time of posting. Although rumours can be true many of them are classified as false and such false rumours are a powerful tool used to manipulate public opinion. It is therefore very important to detect and verify false rumours before they are spread and influence the public opinion. In this workshop the aim is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in social media mining and analysis to deal with the emerging issues of rumour veracity assessment and manipulation of public opinion. Ron Deibert (University of Toronto) will present the work of the Citizen Lab, which has pioneered investigation into information controls, covert surveillance and targeted digital espionage of civil society worldwide. He will be in conversation with Seda Guerses (KU Leuven) and Nishant Shah (ArtEZ University of the Arts/Leuphana University). Ronald Deibert is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. The Citizen Lab undertakes interdisciplinary research at the intersection of global security, ICTs, and human rights. Deibert is the author of Black Code: Surveillance, Privacy, and the Dark Side of the Internet (Random House: 2013), as well as numerous books, chapters, articles, and reports on Internet censorship, surveillance, and cyber security. He is a former founder and principal investigator of the OpenNet Initiative (2003-2014) and a founder of Psiphon, a world leader in providing open access to the Internet. Seda Guerses is an FWO post-doctoral fellow at COSIC/ESAT in the Department of Electrical Engineering at KU Leuven, Belgium. She works at the intersection of computer science, engineering and privacy activism, with a focus on privacy enhancing technologies. She studies conceptions of privacy and surveillance in online social networks, requirements engineering, software engineering and algorithmic discrimination and looks into tackling some of the shortcomings of the counter-surveillance movements in the US and EU. Nishant Shah is the Dean of Graduate School at ArtEZ University of the Arts, The Netherlands, Professor of Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media at Leuphana University, Germany, and the co-founder of the Centre for Internet & Society, India. His work is informed by critical theory, political activism, and equality politics. He identifies as an accidental academic, radical humanist, and an unapologetic feminist, with particular interests in questions of life, love, and language. Hello, I'm teaching a seminar on "Understanding User Engagement" and while most studies will be more empirical work on the nature of online user behavior, I want to encourage discussions around critical notions of user engagement, social media, and online participation. I would love any recommendations you might have. Of course, I've added thinkers such as Lovink and Lanier, but I'm looking for as many points of view as possible, representing an array of cultures, genders, etc. They don't have to be academic journal papers. Articles in Wired/Atlantic and similar publications will be even better. All best wishes, Amy Dobson and Tama Leaver *Digital Intimacies 4: Porousness & Permutations* *December 5**, 6 & 7, Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia* Digital Intimacies is now in its fourth year and continues to bring scholars of digital culture together from across Australia and beyond, across disciplines including media and communication, cultural studies, sociology, and gender studies. This year’s symposium is convened by Amy Dobson and Tama Leaver, and is hosted by Curtin University’s Centre for Culture and Technology and the discipline of Internet Studies in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry. As social media open up intimate lives and practices to public and semi-public gazes, we are in the midst of important cultural contestations over the meaning of intimacy. How intimacy plays out in, and in relation to, the digital has become a prominent concern in scholarship of digital cultures, as well as in broader public debate. Intimacy is generally understood as to do with the ‘personal’ and with ‘closeness’ — as describing feelings or relationships that are most ‘inward to one’s personhood’ (McGlotten, 2013). But, as much queer and social theory tells us, intimacy is also socially and culturally constructed and sanctioned, defined by institutions, laws, and social and cultural norms and practices. Norms around various kinds of intimacies and intimate practices involving media increasingly play out online, and via social media platforms. Digital platforms are structured by a ‘like’ economy (Gerlitz and Helmond, 2013), by drives towards the quantification of self (Lupton, 2016), and algorithms, as well as algorithmic ‘imaginaries’ (Bucher, 2018; Carah and Angus 2018). Digital intimacy has been described in this context as a new kind of social capital (Lambert, 2016), as well as new media ‘genre’ (Raun, 2018). Practices of certain kinds of intimacies via the digital are increasingly seen as vital to ‘successful’ and economically productive use of social media, especially for cultural intermediaries and ‘internet celebrities’ (Abidin, 2018). Simultaneously, many forms of intimacy and communication are being encoded, aggregated, analysed and commercialized as forms of big data, provoking difficult and unsettling questions about new forms of surveillance, influence, and control, as well as distinct lack of transparency around new practices and forms of governance, made publicly visible around recent Cambridge Analytica scandals (Andrejevic, 2013; Leaver, 2017). We are calling for paper abstracts on the themes of digital media, digital cultures, and intimacy, with particular interest in porousness and permutations of every kind; that is, papers that map the flow between boundaries – shifts and permeations of practice and understanding towards new forms, new configurations, and the unsettling existing norms in unexpected and as yet unnamed ways. Within these broadly understood boundaries of digital culture(s) and digital intimacies we invite particular exploration of: * how existing structures, boundaries and norms of intimacy are constituted, reconstituted and made porous in terms of identities, practices and platforms; * how practices of intimacy via the digital can be challenged, changed and new permutations emerge in terms of the social, cultural, and political; * how ‘digital disruption’ (of various sorts) shapes, configures, constitutes and impacts intimacy of every kind.
