The Institute of Geography in Erlangen is one of the biggest Institutes of Geography in the German speaking academia. In rankings of research and teaching performances the Institute frequently reaches top positions (see: https://www.geography.nat.fau.eu/research/) Our main research areas in cultural/human geography are embedded in a conceptual framework, which is captioned by "Contested Geographies". From this perspective, "we conceive and analyse geographies as 'cultural', that is to say as socially constituted, negotiated and thus often controversial". The Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of the leading research universities in Germany and the second largest full-university in Bavaria with an extraordinary broad range of disciplines (see: https://www.fau.eu/) Digital Transformation has been defined as one of the "key research areas" of the FAU bringing together researchers from the social sciences, law, economy, ethics, computer sciences, digital humanities, engineering etc. Our location in Erlangen is an attractive, quite international, lively and bike-oriented southern German university town with a little more than 100,000 inhabitants and roughly 30.000 students. A short 20-min rail- or bus-trip away, Nürnberg (or "Nuremberg") with more than half a million inhabitants is the centre of one of the largest metropolitan areas in southern Germany and offers diverse cultural activities. At Erlangen's and Nürnberg's doorsteps, the Franconian Switzerland as well as the Franconian lakes provide for many leisure opportunities of mid-range mountains (climbing, walking, biking/mountain biking, canoeing, cross country skiing etc.). We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile in cultural/human geography. We seek proposals for individual papers, posters, and organized panels that engage in rigorous theoretical and empirical research on the ways in which algorithms, artificial intelligence and online-platforms shape socio- political processes. We seek to develop a conversation among an interdisciplinary group of scholars working in this important emerging field. Assistant/Associate Professor of Technical Communication & Rhetoric Texas Tech University’s Technical Communication & Rhetoric program in the Department of English invites applications for TWO open-rank positions to begin August 2019. These are 9-month appointments. We are especially interested in advanced Assistant or Associate-level colleagues who specialize in web design, information design, digital and social media, big data and web analytics, and/or usability/UX. Preference given to applicants with the PhD in Technical Communication. The Kluge Center in the Library's flagship Thomas Jefferson Building brings a small number of major scholars and thinkers to the Library of Congress every year to use the rich and often unique materials available here. Appointees are chosen on the basis of intellectual accomplishment, the ability to communicate ideas to a broad audience, and their relevance to the challenges faced by democracies in the 21st century. It is our hope that they will stimulate thinking by sharing their insight and analysis through informal discussions and formal presentations within the Center and the Library. The Kluge Chairs are suited for the most distinguished and innovative scholars who are at the height of their creative and intellectual powers. Best, Pinelopi Call for papers Re:coding Black Mirror - One day workshop at CPDP2019 MOTIVATION Black Mirror is a British sci-fi series directed by Charlie Brooker portraying a dystopian future emanating from the wide use of digital advancements. Even though Black Mirror’s episodes do not entirely rely on the widespread availability of existing technology, some of the advancements presented are not from such a distant future. The ethical and societal implications emerging from the increasing reliance on digital media (partly depicted in the series) has been a longstanding debate in critical studies underlying issues around privacy, social control, social and individual justice and other key values around Democracy such as freedom of speech. Computer science has picked up on such kind of issues focusing mainly on privacy offering technical solutions such as privacy by design and encryption amongst other tools. FORMAT Re:coding Black Mirror is a one-day workshop which aims at creating dialogue and connections between computer, data and social scientists and also activists and privacy advocates that are interested in the societal and ethical implications of digital technologies. In order to address emerging social phenomena from different perspectives, the workshop employs a novel interactive format, where researchers are invited to create futuristic scenarios as the ones depicted in Black Mirror exploring emerging societal and ethical concerns. It will also be a forum for raising opportunities of networking with scholars from different fields to explore novel research problems that can be relevant to both the web and social science communities. TOPICS Given the novelty of the workshop format, we welcome submissions addressing two different issues, as explained in the brief summaries below. Possible submissions are not restricted to those examples but works addressing those scenarios would be very much welcome too. (1) Works showing how the ongoing research in the web community could enable/lead to dystopic scenarios similar to the ones presented in Black Mirror episodes and also, how it could prevent/minimise such risks. For example: * How could web technologies be used to integrate information about another person from multiple online sources (digital footprinting), providing a mean for stalking or even blackmailing them? (S03E03) * How could web technologies be designed to prevent the abuse of user ratings based on the relations between people and information about their network/context? (S03E01) (2) Works exploring the societal and ethical concerns emerging from digital technologies as presented in Black Mirror episodes. For example: * How do technological developments impact parental surveillance strategies and consequently the family environment? (S04E02) * How does the normalization of surveillance through gamification change individuals’ relationship with the surveillance apparatus? We seek candidates with research agendas addressing far-reaching societal and cultural shifts emerging alongside the growing pervasiveness of digital technologies, with focus on cultural and ideological dimensions and impacts in areas such as: networked and digital journalism, tech industry studies, multimedia storytelling, and/or technology in everyday life. We are particularly interested in those whose research methods and/or creative applications are evolving to meet the challenges of studying digital production, practices, data collection and use, etc. Candidates should be prepared to help equip students with the multimedia production and editing skills necessary to engage with the ways that digital technologies have transformed communication-related fields across multiple platforms, and will be asked to teach a combination of theory, skill/production, and additional undergraduate and graduate classes according to area of expertise. The normal teaching load is 5 courses spread across 3 academic quarters in an academic year, prior to receipt of tenure.
