Recommendations on histories of 3 web communities

Hi all, Long time subscriber, first-time emailer. I consistently find this list is useful for my work in many unexpected ways, thank you all for this. I am a researcher at HOPE not hate<http://hopenothate.com>, Britain's largest anti-racism and anti-fascism organisation. As part of my work, I am currently researching the histories of three web communities with important ties to the alt-right. If anyone has any recommended reading on any of these three, it would be much appreciated. They are the 'manosphere', the 'reactosphere' or NRx community, and the broader online 'chan culture' associated with 4chan but which has a very broad and preexising scope. Any studies mapping constituent blogs/boards within these communities and their interactions over time would be especially helpful. Thanks again, Simon

CONFERENCE THEME: Rethinking Privacy and Trust in the Social Media Age Can we trust what we hear and see on social media? For a time, social media was viewed as a net positive for society. In their 2013 book, The New Digital Age, Google's Jared Cohen and Eric Schmidt wrote:"Never before have so many people been connected through an instantly responsive network." In 2015, Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder and CEO of Facebook, wrote a glowing endorsement of the internet and social media calling it "a force for peace in the world." He argued that connecting people through social media would help to bring about a "shared understanding" of the human condition and build a "common global community." Fast forward to 2018, social media is now embroiled in a series of ongoing public scandals involving data abuse and misuse-with the most infamous scandal involving the UK data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica. More troubling is fact that social media has emerged as fertile ground for fostering anti-social behaviour and is an important vector for disinformation, misinformation, and manipulation operations. These realities have further raised users' privacy concerns and challenged public trust in social media, which has resulted in a revitalized call for new legislation and regulation. Considering this context, the <http://socialmediaandsociety.org/> International Conference on Social Media & Society invites scholarly and original submissions that explore key questions and central issues related (but not limited) to the 2019 theme of "Rethinking Privacy and Trust in the Social Media Age." Assistant Professor, Critical Media and Communication Studies (2 appointments) Department of Communication Studies and Multimedia Faculty of Humanities McMaster University The Department of Communication Studies and Multimedia at McMaster University invites applications from qualified candidates for two tenure-track appointments in Critical Media and Communication Studies to commence July 1, 2019, at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking applicants whose primary area of research is in Critical Race, Ethnicity, and/or Indigenous Studies in close intersection with one or some of the following areas: Queer/Trans Theory, Critical Disability Studies, Social/Environmental Justice, Post/Anti-colonial and/or Transnational Studies, Critical Data and Internet Studies, and/or Critical Media Studies. The successful candidates will have a completed PhD in Communication Studies (or cognate area). Candidates’ application materials should demonstrate a record of research success and potential to become a leading scholar in their field and to attract research funding. Previous experience teaching at the university level in Communication Studies is preferred. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in Communication Studies and graduate courses and supervision in our MA program in Communication & New Media and our new PhD program in Communication, New Media & Cultural Studies. Applicants should identify undergraduate courses they are qualified to teach in our Communication Studies program. Housed in the Faculty of Humanities, the Department of Communication Studies and Multimedia is home to two BA Honours programs; the MA program in Communication and New Media; the McMaster-Syracuse Master of Communications Management program; and, jointly with the Department of English and Cultural Studies, the PhD program in Communication, New Media & Cultural Studies. Daniel Miller wrote about this a few years ago as well (see link below), though it was less about class than it was about generational shifts. How do these changes influence, and how are they influenced by, participants in various contexts of work and everyday life? We warmly welcome contributions that outline future trends and present new perspectives on interaction and discourse studies. Presentations may investigate the complexity of different settings, data, methods and theories.
