TPRC (the Research Conference on Communications, Information and Internet Policy) and the Benton Foundation announce the third year of the Charles Benton Early Career Scholar Award <http://www.tprcweb.com/charles-benton-early-career-scholar-award/> recognizing scholarship in the area of digital inclusion and broadband adoption. Early Career scholars (those currently enrolled in a degree program or no more than five years from receipt of most recent degree) are invited to submit per the guidelines below. The winner of this special honor will be presented with a $1,500 cash prize at lunch during the TPRC47 conference and the TPRC Conference fee will be waived. The winner will be required to contribute a blog article based on the winning submission for publication on the Benton Foundation website. Applicants are invited to submit any/all of the following for consideration: (1) an original empirically-based research paper pertaining to the area of digital inclusion and/or broadband adoption, (2) a policy proposal for digital inclusion and broadband adoption with a discussion of the justification, and/or (3) an essay on a topic dealing with digital inclusion and/or broadband adoption. Submissions must be less than 25 double-spaced, typewritten pages, inclusive of notes and bibliography and will not have been formally published in a peer review outlet prior to TPRC47. Submissions must be received by May 31. The recipient will be chosen by a TPRC Board Committee. The winner will be informed by July 15 and the winner will be required to attend the conference and agree to work with Benton Foundation’s Executive Editor, Kevin Taglang, to produce the blog article for benton.org by December 31, 2019. Tutorials are intensive instructional sessions aimed to provide a comprehensive introduction to established or emerging research topics of interest for the UMAP community. This joins our first free online short-course Social Media: How Media Got Social which remains available to anyone interested: https://www.edx.org/course/social-media-how-media-got-social More detail about Disability and Digital Media: Accessibility, Representation and Inclusion follows: Curtin University’s latest Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will explore how social media – including memes – is changing the face of disability, as well as the opportunities and challenges the online age presents to people with disabilities. The free four-week MOOC, delivered through the edX online learning platform, will help learners understand the impact of social media on representations of disability and the role of accessibility in the digital world. The course, titled Disability and Digital Media, consists of four modules, delving into the politics of experiencing and discussing disability online and the presence of disability in memes, viral content and online culture. Course Coordinator Associate Professor Katie Ellis, from the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, said the MOOC offered an opportunity to learn about the relationship between digital technologies and disability in an ever-changing online landscape. “As an increasingly prevalent and pervasive part of our daily lives, the internet is a reflection of who we are and the society we live in,” Associate Professor Ellis said. “This MOOC will help learners understand how a contemporary online environment, including social media, is changing representations of disability and will explore the opportunities and challenges of representing disability online.” Disability and Digital Media will cover a range of topics including social and medical models of disability, key concepts and terminology for understanding digital disability, how memes and viral content are being used by disability activists and how the tools of digital accessibility can benefit all media users. Curtin University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Jill Downie said the digital world presented new and innovative ways for people to learn, making education more accessible for many. “This online course is relevant to online learners from all parts of the world who are interested in learning more about the relationship between digital technologies and disability in the internet age,” Professor Downie said. “By working with edX to deliver these online courses, Curtin is offering greater flexibility to students, professionals and global learners looking to develop their skills, study a passion or further their qualifications.” Disability and Digital Media will run in self-paced mode for 2019, so participants may enrol and complete it at any time. We invite applications from scholars with a recent Ph.D. in science & technology studies (STS) or related fields (e.g., sociology, anthropology, law, media studies, information science) and an active research agenda on the social aspects of data science. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be expected to devote 50% time to his or her own research agenda and 50% time to working with S&TS Department faculty on developing the Data Science & Society Lab, a new and innovative course that is part of the Cornell Data Science Curriculum Initiative. The lab will engage undergraduate students in two components: instruction in theoretical tools and practical skills for analyzing social and ethical problems in contemporary data science (e.g., data science as ethical practice; fairness, justice, discrimination; privacy; openness, ownership, and control; or credibility of data science); and participation in interdisciplinary project teams that work with external partners to address a real-world data science & society problem. The Postdoctoral Researcher will have the opportunity to help launch and shape the initiative, to develop curriculum and engagement projects, build relationships with external partners and participate in teaching the course. Systems can automate, analyze and transform our work. In doing so, I relied on the automotive industry and examined the interaction between man and machine. The purpose I am writing is also a potential collaboration! The research should be conducted in the field of Information Systems. It is a continuous work of my third paper about gamification and affordances. The research project is of qualitative nature and is in cooperation with a major car manufacturer. **Apologies for cross-posting** Popular Communication: The International Journal of Media and Culture Call for Papers: Re-visiting the Communication Commons URL: https://think.taylorandfrancis.com/popular-communication-revisiting-commons/ In the last decade, the concept of the commons has become prolific, if not popular. There are millions of references to the commons in a very wide range of literatures, from the academic, social activist, to the UN-and other multilateral institutions, think tanks, and popular literatures. However, in most, the idea of the commons is rather vague, a stand-in for public resources that avoids any references to specific collectivities of people, places, political economies and systems of power, and/or the historical and conflict-ridden origins of the commons at the dawn of the capitalist era in Northern Europe. The record within communications, media and cultural studies is much better. Here, the commons, and related concepts of commoners and enclosure, have been taken up by a smaller but significant number of researchers, who have, for the most part, theorized about the historical and contemporary commons or “the common” as an alternative to capitalist productive and social relations. Researchers have studied the collective management, production processes and forms of cooperative social organization in a number of artistic, media activist and designer communities, and especially with regards to digital software and hardware, and the operation and governance of information and of media platforms. A similar framework has been used in studies of the cultural and communications practices of social change movements that have actively worked against the privatization and “enclosure” of public goods or other commons-based resources and of the exploitation of labour (i.e., the Landless Workers’ Movement in Brazil, the Zapatista movement in Mexico, Ecuadorian indigenous movements and the Chilean student movement). Linking these studies has been a theorization of the commons as sites of emergent value systems in which a new subjectivity, characterized by mutual aid, care, trust, and conviviality, may be reproduced over time through ‘commoning’ activities. This special issue calls for a re-evaluation of the communication commons, especially given the major changes in geopolitics and global communications economies, ecologies and cultures. To do so, articles will examine the history of the communications commons, and interrogate its contemporary applicability and relevance. * In what ways and how do communications commons constitute a new political, social and cultural project? * How effectively, for example, have communications commons been able to negotiate their relationship with the state and the capitalist market, and with what consequences? * How is the concept utilized in different world regions, cultural traditions and languages? * How are communications commons changing, given the new generations or communities of practice, and especially the increasingly precarious conditions of work and life? * How do commons negotiate intersectional differences of economic, social, technological and cultural power? * In what ways can commons-based projects be used to inform novel ways of collectively organizing productive activity?
