Dear AoIRists, We are pleased to announce Professor Bronwyn Carlson from Macquarie University is our 2019 Keynote Speaker for the upcoming AoIR Conference in Brisbane. Professor Carlson is a leading scholar in the field of Indigenous Studies and her research interests include Indigenous identities, Digital Indigenous Humanities and Global Indigeneity. Her latest project, Aboriginal Help-Seeking Behaviours on Social Media explored the rapid uptake of social media by Indigenous people, informal help-seeking and the way Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people engage digital communication technologies. Professor Carlson will address the 2019 conference theme of Trust in the System with her Keynote, Indigenous Internet users: Learning to trust ourselves. She describes the presentation as: “Trust in the System” is contentious, if not spurious for many Indigenous Internet users. “Trust” signifies as a term that embodies (and disembodies) our experiences from over two hundred years of colonisation. Research has shown that Indigenous people have always been early adopters of technology. Over the last decade or so, social media technologies have gradually become a central part of our everyday lives. It offers opportunities to connect across vast distances and diverse populations. It provides a platform to express one’s identity, connect with community, learn, play, seek love, organise political action, find lost friends and family, search for employment, seek help in times of need—and much more. Almost every aspect of everyday life has in some way been shaped, modified or enhanced by social media technologies. Indigenous people have made particular use of social media for agitating for social justice. Information can be distributed, events coordinated and alliances spontaneously forged across great distances largely outside of the surveillance and control of state actors. Assessing the actual impact of online activism is not a straightforward matter—any concept of ‘trust in the system’ demands that we begin to infiltrate that system in order to force ‘it’ to incorporate the views and experiences of Indigenous actors and activists online. Dear AoIRists, on behalf of my colleagues in the H2020 cost action on wearable robotics, I am very pleased to call your attention to the call for submissions for a special issue on "Ethical, Legal, and Societal Aspects of Wearable Robots," to be published in the De Gryter open access journal, Paladyn, Journal of Behavioral Robotics. Broadly, the cost action group aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the ethical, legal, and societal issues in Wearable Robotics, especially as related to the design, deployment and practical use of wearable robots. Social media data analysis and GDPR

Hello list, I am wondering who else on this list does social media data analysis and is concerned about GDPR compliance. Our research group, Utrecht Data School, works with a number of protocols to comply with rules in terms of data management, data processing, cooperation with third parties etc. However, we were pointed to the limits of the exceptions granted for academic, artistic and journalistic use of of data under the GDPR Implementation Act in the Netherlands. Does anyone here has experience in dealing with GDPR and social media data analysis. We would very much like to start a conversation and develop procedures for doing research and complying with the GDPR. Looking forward to learn more about this. Based in a liberal arts faculty, in a research-intensive university, the Department of Communication Arts has undergraduate programs in Speech Communication, Theatre & Performance, and Digital Arts Communication, and currently serves approximately 200 majors and 150 minors. In addition, the Department delivers approximately 100 sections of communication courses to students from several different programs across the University. The successful candidate will have an exceptional research and/or practitioner profile, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and a background in digital media/arts and communication. Applicants are expected to have a PhD in hand or be ABD with dissertation near completion. Ideal candidates will bring an ability to contribute to the Digital Arts Communication minor, the Speech Communication major, and courses designed and delivered for students from across the university. In addition, candidates will be expected to contribute to the integration of digital arts practice into courses across the department. It is expected that the candidate will be engaged in scholarship or creative activities associated with digital arts as both a mode of production and an area of theoretical and critical inquiry. In particular, candidates may have expertise in digital design, interactive media, digital storytelling, game design, tangible media, online digital platforms, or some other related area. A demonstrated pedagogical commitment to theoretically-informed practice, student-centered learning, and engagement of broad public issues is desirable. Additional expertise in critical race, indigenous, dis/ability, trans, feminist, and/or queer approaches to the practice and study digital media and communication are welcome. Surveillance in the Digital Society Hi All Can I please share with you our workshop details: Workshop announcement: See for details ‘Surveillance in the Digital Society <http://ecis2019.eu/programme/workshops-and-tutorials/surveillance-in-the-di…>’ Surveillance is not a new phenomenon, digitalization has however enabled surveillance of a magnitude we have not seen before. On social media people share the intimacies of their lives, leading to a huge repository of information. Additionally the volume of digital surveillance devices, such as stationary surveillance systems (CCTV), mobile devices such as smartphones, body-worn cameras, cameras in cars, drones and a variety of sensors. The development in algorithms and artificial intelligence, advances also the analytical step in surveillance, for example by face and motion recognition. The workshop invites short papers that reflect upon surveillance in the digital society by looking at how these practices are constructed, organised, experienced and regulated. A non-exhaustive list of different angles may include (but are not limited to): Self-surveillance - The attention one pays to one’s behaviour whilst, actuality or virtuality, being observed. Organizational surveillance - Digitized work-places enabling the monitoring of employees, partners, and customers posing ethical dilemmas Societal surveillance - The disproportionate, unlimited citizen online monitoring, enabled by new anti-terrorism laws, criticized for turning citizens into suspects. Sousveillance - The act of surveilling others as they surveil you Resistance towards surveillance - The use of strategies to avoid or disrupt the surveillance mechanisms The purpose with the workshop A half-day workshop that will consist of a keynote speaker Professor Ben Light and presentation of accepted papers in a round table fashion. The workshop should be seen as a springboard for ideas and early-stage manuscripts. The format is meant to encourage reflective discussions between researchers interested in surveillance in the digital society. The workshop will target junior and established academics that are attending ECIS, and we particularly encourage early career and PhD students to submit. Submissions will be screened but not reviewed, and we will apply a generous policy in this “first round” and accept all papers that fall within the above stated theme/scope of the workshop. After a long period of optimism that accompanied the explosion of social media and assumptions of their democratic potential, today’s discourse is dominated by fear. Fear about the unchecked power of digital monopolies like Facebook, Google and Amazon; about the (ab)use of social media by far right political movements; about the psychopathologies, risks and trade-offs associated with constant and unyielding connectivity; fears about the radical surveillance enabled by the digital. What are the actual dangers we face in a world where almost every aspect of our life is digitally mediated? What are the ways people are trying to respond to these dangers, individually and collectively? What solutions do society and technology offer for challenging total digital interpellation? This international conference will explore the digital pessimism that is currently engulfing our understanding of the internet and social media, and assess possibilities for resistance. We shall explore a number of connected topics: risks connected to datafication and surveillance; dangers connected to authoritarian uses of the internet; the psychological perils of pervasive connection; and citizen/activist efforts to respond to these threats. Money’s status as a memory technology is particularly significant in light of the role that information and communication technologies now play in economic transactions. Many of the new channels and infrastructures for payments, such as magnetic cards, mobile phones, the wired Internet, social media platforms, and RFID technologies, record detailed transactional data alongside a range of other identifying data. We now have extremely detailed records of the many ways that money circulates, is transferred and is spent. This paper concerns this previously latent transactional data and how it is currently recorded, monetised, and used to inform action. What has been recorded in and about money at different moments in time and how are these categories breaking down? Who has access to and ownership over this collectively produced record and how is it driving new data practices and business models based on the monetisation and application of monetary records?
