I know, exactly what you don't need to do at this crazy point in the semester. At AU, Profs. Aram Sinnreich, Joseph Graf and I have been working with Electronic Frontier Foundation and New Media Rights to design a survey about DMCA exemption language and its accessibility. Would you be interested in taking, sharing with your students and networks, including putting on social media the survey link <http://bit.ly/2nEfY8j>? Non-software uses of GitHub
by Jim Herbsleb 16 Apr '25

16 Apr '25

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. CfP: Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw (EASST panel D04)
by maxigas 08 Feb '20

08 Feb '20

CfP: Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw EASST 2018, 25-28th July 2018, Lancaster University, UK Convenors: Johan Söderberg (Göteborg University) & Maxigas (Lancaster University) Deadline for submissions: February 14th 2018. Submit abstracts and contact the conveners at: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6286 We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to our panel at EASST 2018 The panel investigates innovation processes driven by antagonistic relations between actors on both sides of the law. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. >From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. We encourage paper submissions utilizing diverse theoretical approaches and a wide range of case studies to explore the concept of the "outlaw innovator". -- Maxigas, kiberpunk FA00 8129 13E9 2617 C614 0901 7879 63BC 287E D166 Lecturer in Critical Digital Media Practice Center for Science Studies Department of Sociology Lancaster University https://relay70.metatron.ai/ Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind Cannot bear very much reality. ~ Yeats: Burnt Norton

Any research on/with YouTube API?
by Steven Clift 23 Sep '19

23 Sep '19

So I stumbled into a developer who created one of those "floating" YouTube music video players. After six years of curating the original radio news "flash briefing," I thought hey, why not try video. Combining forces on Android (so far) we've come up with: http://tvnewsapp.com So, here's the deal. The YouTube API is pretty darn interesting and I'd love to connect with researchers who are experimenting with it. I am interested in ways to better automate how to surface live news streams. The app has scores of these. I never expected so many from so many countries. Some countries clearly are all in with nearly all news channels competing on Facebook while others while free on the web haven't joined the YouTube club. Anyway, get in touch if you've dug into the YouTube API. Heck perhaps we can even collaborate. Cheers, Steven Clift P.S. My 150K downloads radio news app: http://1radionews.com

Be part of the article collection on Big Data Ethics
by Daniel Thomas 21 May '19

21 May '19

Would you like to submit an article to an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics"? In collaboration with the journals (Frontiers in) Genetics, Pharmacology, Sociology, ICT, and Digital Humanities, we are organizing an interdisciplinary article collection on "Big Data Ethics" (Guest Editors: Dov Greenbaum, Daniel R. Thomas). The aim of this project is to bring together international experts to provide a comprehensive view of this topic. Would you like to participate as a contributing author? Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by experts in the relevant field and, if accepted for publication, will be free to access for all readers, and indexed in relevant repositories. This interdisciplinary collection is cross-listed across several journals and so you will need to submit your article via the journal relevant to your field so that your article is in scope of both the collection and the journal. The abstract submission deadline is 30th March but you do not have to submit an abstract in advance, this is so that we can tell you if your article seems to be in scope before you go to the trouble of writing it. It will also help us ensure we get a balance of articles across different disciplines by allowing us to spot any gaps. The manuscript deadline is 31 August 2018 but you can submit before then and the review and publication process will begin immediately. We aim to complete the review process within 30 days and the journal average of time from submission to publication is 90 days. Further details can be found here: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/7202/big-data-ethics Frontiers is owned by the Nature publishing group and is not a scam publisher. Re: [Air-L] theoretical framings of dark patterns in design
by Michael Dieter 30 Apr '19

I wrote a short chapter some time ago on dark patterns in this collection using a range of different sources, a sort of evil media inspired analysis - https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1057/9781137437204_13 I have to admit it was a bit sketchy, my thoughts on it have probably changed a bit. I still think the lineage through media theoretical and anthropological accounts of trapping is quite interesting though, including people like Alfred Gell or Vilém Flusser - see Nick Seaver's recent work on algorithms as traps or Benedict Singleton's dissertation work on the rise of service design for some uses of these frameworks. There's also the history of design patterns first proposed by architect Christopher Alexander, which was then taken up by software developers in the 80s and 90s, most famously through object-oriented programming, which spread into through other more specific domains like interface design or even business thinking. O'Reilly's Web 2.0 manifesto was subtitled "Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software" after all. Design patterns establish a shared vocabulary, a shared set of practices that are easily recognisable and, of course, reiterable. Alexander described them in terms of a language - and in his respect, they offer an interesting way to establish a context, a collective comprehension. The concept also has links to information theory in Alexander's early experiments with computational analysis of urban space, and habituation in the reiterative practices of programming or user interaction more generally (another way to read what Wendy Chun calls habitual media imo). But that said, Harry Brignull's analysis of dark patterns is still the best account in my opinion - and I wouldn't describe this as 'a journalism', but rather an internal critique within the UX industry to identify and share contexts where unethical interface design is practiced. And quite a successful intervention at that! > > From: "Love, Patrick S" <lovep(a)purdue.edu> > Date: 30 April 2019 at 15:53:15 CEST > To: Daniel Marques <danielmarquescontato(a)gmail.com> > Cc: "air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org" <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> > Subject: Re: [Air-L] theoretical framings of dark patterns in design > > I’ve found this piece particularly instructive: > > https://www.presenttensejournal.org/volume-6/building-dark-patterns-into-pl… > Trice and Potts (2018) Building Dark Patterns into Platforms: How GamerGate Perturbed Twitter’s User Experience. > > > > > Patrick Love > > PhD Candidate, Purdue University Rhetoric and Composition > > Technical Writer, Center for Science of Information, NSF STC > > Technology Mentor, Purdue ICaP > > > On Apr 30, 2019, at 8:26 AM, Daniel Marques <danielmarquescontato(a)gmail.com<mailto:danielmarquescontato@gmail.com>> wrote: > > I believe this paper is a good starting point: > > https://doi.org/10.1515/popets-2016-0038 > > Tales from the Dark Side: Privacy Dark Strategies and Privacy Dark Patterns > Christoph Böschchristoph.boesch(a)uni-ulm.de1 > , > Benjamin Erbbenjamin.erb(a)uni-ulm.de1 > , > Frank Karglfrank.kargl(a)uni-ulm.de1 > , > Henning Kopphenning.kopp(a)uni-ulm.de1 > and > Stefan Pfattheicherstefan.pfattheicher(a)uni-ulm.de2 > > Em ter, 30 de abr de 2019 às 09:16, Anna Paukova <anna.paukova(a)gmail.com<mailto:anna.paukova@gmail.com>> > escreveu: > > Dear all, > > i am searching for any relevant theoretical readings which would help > framing the nature of dark patterns ( > https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/dark-pattern) how they function > etc. > I was wondering if any scholar work on the subject exists or it is rather a > 'journalism'. > > Thanks in advance, > > Anna Paukova > UX Researcher > Moscow > _______________________________________________ > The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org<mailto:Air-L@listserv.aoir.org> mailing list > is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org > Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: > http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > > Join the Association of Internet Researchers: > http://www.aoir.org/ > > > > -- > *daniel marques* | +55 71 9 9998 7903 > > Professor Assistente | CECULT/UFRB > > http://lattes.cnpq.br/9571839733024528 > @daniel_kk | facebook.com/danielmarqueskk<http://facebook.com/danielmarqueskk> > _______________________________________________ > The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org<mailto:Air-L@listserv.aoir.org> mailing list > is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org > Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > > Join the Association of Internet Researchers: > http://www.aoir.org/ > _______________________________________________ > The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list > is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org > Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > > Join the Association of Internet Researchers: > http://www.aoir.org/ -- Michael Dieter http://twitter.com/#!/mdieter

Dear Anna, We are organizing a summer school on the intersection of dark patterns and privacy, you can find more information about it here: https://isp.cs.ru.nl/2019/ One of the UX based framings was published by Gray et al.: http://colingray.me/wp-content/uploads/2018_Grayetal_CHI_DarkPatternsUXDesi… We also asked on twitter where other than in UX people see dark patterns, you can find that thread here: https://twitter.com/sedyst/status/1111238148762361857 <https://twitter.com/sedyst/status/1111238148762361857> Hope that helps.
