[With apologizes for cross-posting] Call for papers: Media representations and narratives of masculinities across Europe The journal Social Studies is announcing a call for papers for a monothematic issue with a working title Media representations and narratives of masculinities across Europe. The editors of the issue are Inês Amaral and Sofia José Santos (University of Coimbra). This special issue aims to bring together critical analysis focusing on media representations, discourses, narratives and counter-narratives of what it means to be and behave “like a man” in today’s Europe. It wishes to contribute to a comprehensive reflection on the stereotypes that underlie discourses in the mass media and in the online media, and on how cultural productions co-opt, confront, criticize, renegotiate and seek to promote gender alternatives that challenge gender inequality. This special issue welcomes theoretical and empirical articles that use qualitative, quantitative or mixed methodologies and focus on media representations and narratives of men and masculinities, their relation to policy and legislation, counter-narratives to the stereotyped representations of gender roles, the relation between feminism and masculinities and the fallout of the MeToo movement, social media activism, digital literacy, critical media literacy and other related topics. Papers focusing on research methods with which to address these issues are also welcome. He taught at University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign from 1974-1986, where he was head of the Division of Quantitative and Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and promoted to Full Professor in 1982. He came to California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) in 1986 on leave from University of Illinois, and made the position here permanent in 1988. He is a founder and current co-director of the Decision Research Center at CSUF. He was named Outstanding Professor for CSUF in 1991-92. He has published more than 140 scientific articles and three books. In the last decade, he has had five grants from the National Science Foundation and one from the American Psychological Association. He served as president of the Society for Mathematical Psychology, 2002-2003, president of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making, 2008-2009, and president of the Society for Computers in Psychology, 2009-2010. Charles "Chick" M. Judd is College Professor of Distinction Emeritus at University of Colorado, Boulder. He received his PhD in 1976 from Columbia University after getting a B.A. from Yale. He then became Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor at Harvard University. In 1981 he became an Associate Professor at University of Colorado, Boulder, where he was promoted to Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience in 1987 and College Professor of Distinction in 2006. He has been a Visiting Professor at Oxford University, the University of California Berkeley, and Stanford University, among others. He served as the editor of both the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His research has been devoted to two main areas: social cognition and research methods. In the former area, he has published widely on stereotyping, prejudice, and intergroup relations, particularly looking at causes and consequences of perceived group differences. In the later area, his work has been devoted to issues of mediation, moderation, the analysis of data with dependencies, and mixed models with multiple random factors. Among numerous awards, he received the Thomas Ostrom Award for Lifetime Contributions to Social Cognition Research, 2010 and in 2012 the Jacob Cohen Award from the American Psychological Association. He also was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. Gary McClelland is a Professor emeritus of the University of Colorado, Boulder, received his PhD in 1971 from the University of Michigan, and has been a pioneer in the use of interactive web-based graphics to support understanding of methodological concepts in both scientific journal articles and in educational materials (e.g., Irwin & McClelland, 2003; McClelland, 1997, 2000). Gary's two primary research interests are (1) judgment and decision making and (2) statistical methods. He is a founding member of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making and a founding fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. He and Chick Judd in 2012 jointly won the Jacob Cohen Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring by the American Psychological Association, Div. 5. Ulf-Dietrich Reips is a Full Professor at the University of Konstanz. He received his PhD in 1996 from the University of Tübingen. His research focuses on Internet-based research methodologies, the psychology of the Internet, measurement, development, perceptions of inequality, cognition of causality, personality, privacy, Social Media, mobile experience sampling, collective behavior, and Big Data. In 1994, he founded the Web Experimental Psychology Lab, the first laboratory for conducting real experiments on the World Wide Web. Ulf was a founder of the German Society for Online Research, was elected the first non-North American president of the Society for Computers in Psychology and he is the founding editor of the free open access journal International Journal of Internet Science. They are often the first to adopt new technologies and platforms, to experiment with modes of production and practices of sharing, and?due to the significant role that social relations play in their lives?often spend significant time and energy socializing online (Ito et al., 2009, 2019; Jenkins et al., 2016). Youth digital participation has been explored as an opportunity for areas including learning and professional development (e.g., Ito et al., 2019); self-expression and identity exploration (e.g., Renninger, 2015); social connection (e.g., Weinstein, 2018); as well as for civic and political participation and expression (e.g., Kligler-Vilenchik & Literat, 2018). At the same time, youth digital participation should not be uncritically celebrated: Rather, researchers should be cognizant of the nuances of youth participation and a focus on when, how, why and for what youth digital participation matters (Literat et al., 2018). For this issue, we invite theoretical and empirical (quantitative, qualitative or mixed-methods) papers that delve into youth digital participation from such a nuanced perspective, including papers which explore: - The potentials and opportunities for youth digital participation, including learning, self-expression, social connection, identity formation and more; - Youth civic/political expression and participation, including civic learning, cross-cutting exposure, and political socialization; - How young people?s participatory practices in digital spaces contribute (or not) to youth empowerment and agency; - Youth perspectives on their own digital participation; - Challenges and risks around youth participation; - The digital participation of marginalized youth; - Methodological perspectives and innovative approaches to studying youth digital participation; - Ethical issues related to the study of youth digital participation. Larp about technology?

Hello everyone - I just spent the week at a Larp camp (live action roleplaying) with my kids and absolutely loved it. I’m thinking a Larp about a near future drenched in ethical dilemmas about technology use might be brilliant for research dissemination, teaching, and maybe research too. Conveniently enough, it turns out two of the Larp writers involved with the camp I was at have recently been hired by my university’s freshly renovated museum to facilitate dramatic participatory research dissemination, and they’re keen on developing a larp with me. Do any of you have experience using larping in research dissemination or teaching at university level? Or do you know examples of technology-rich larps? Or have any other suggestions? The Digital Ecosystem Research Challenge <https://www.digitalecosystem.ca/?lang=en> aims to support research and innovation exploration into uses and impacts of digital media in the 2019 federal election in Canada. There are four award categories: $10 000, $25 000, $50 000, and $100 000. Applicants are strongly encouraged to reach out to Prof. Taylor Owen ( taylor.owen(a)mcgill.ca) to discuss their specific data needs in advance of submitting their application. Academic researchers and civil society groups with an academic institution-based partner are encouraged to apply. Teams can consist of PhD students, Postdoctoral Fellows, Faculty Members, and other researchers from civil society groups. The PI listed on the first page of the application form must be based at an academic institution in order for us to transfer funds. Award winners must contribute to the collaboration in the following ways: 1. 1. Attend a mandatory virtual workshop on data strategy the week of July 22, 2019; 2. Provide a short progress update (2-4 paragraphs) via email on September 30, 2019; 3. Contribute to a public report which will summarize the findings across all projects. Each winning team will produce a written summary of initial findings and summary of activities (an outline will be provided in advance, approximately 2000 words) by January 15, 2020; 4. Attend a two-day conference at the University of Ottawa on February 20-21, 2020. The cost for at least one team member to attend this conference (travel, accommodation, and meals) must be included in your budget. It is also expected that all results of the projects developed should be made publicly available within a reasonable amount of time from the end date of the project. We encourage researchers to combine this work with their existing projects or to supplement this digital data with other sources. It is the responsibility of award recipients ensure ethics approval at home institutions. Acceptable budget lines can include: Direct research costs, costs to develop or licence research tools, salaries (RAs, external researchers), travel related to research and travel to Ottawa in February 2020 to participate in the post-election conference (mandatory for at least one team member but multiple team members are encouraged to attend), public dissemination of findings. We are unable to cover institutional overhead or provide release time for full time academic appointments. There will be a reporting requirement at the end of the project. A grant agreement between uOttawa and the host institute of the PI will be required for all meritorious projects, details to follow. Hi Jill and everyone, I missed a few messages, so this may have been mentioned already: Ruth Catlow, of Furtherfield <https://furtherfield.org/> (London/UK), has done some interesting LARPing (some of it developed with Ben Vickers, curator of digital at The Serpentine). This was mostly done in the context of art/tech and financial activism, specifically in the ‘crypto’ realm – i.e., LARPs about designing/implementing crypto currencies. In other words, very tech-heavy context, but the LARP offers a way to generalise/abstract that and approach it from a more conceptual angle. I’m not sure to which extent these LARPing efforts are documented online (I know at least one is: it took place at MoneyLab #3 in Amsterdam in 2016). In any case, I could imagine that she’d be willing to share some ideas/materials regarding the process. I’m currently in early stages developing a series of LARP workshops with Ruth, for participants aged roughly 15-25, on the concept of speculative futures of cashless societies and their community impact.
