Dear colleagues This call for papers may be of interest to those of you studying work and employment, industrial relations, labour studies and related fields. ### Disrupting technology: contextualising continuity and change in technology, work and employment 16-17th January, Centre for Employment Relations Innovation and Change, University of Leeds Recent scholarship on the relationship between technology and work has often tended to accentuate new technologies’ supposed transformative effects. Conferences on work and employment often feature streams dedicated solely to new technologies – such as platforms or AI – segregated from other streams where technology is mentioned very little. This both narrows our understandings of what constitutes ‘technology’ and contributes to the renewed growth of technological determinism, both in its utopian or dystopian variants- from Fully Automated Luxury Communism” on one hand to a nightmare of total surveillance on the other. Such debates are often speculative and can serve to obscure how actually existing employment relations are being shaped by new technologies. The Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC) at Leeds University Business School is pleased to announce a call for papers for a two day event in January 2020 relating to these questions. This workshop calls for more careful, empirically grounded, theorisations of technology, its novelty and its impact on work and employment relations. We ask that contributions recognise the influence of conflicted interests and actions by managers, workers, the state and other social actors on the patterns, processes and outcomes of technological innovation. By devoting more attention to contextualising and historicising the relationship between technology and work, we ask contributors to develop more critical accounts of the extent of transformation and disruption, vis-à-vis entrenchment or continuity of existing social relations and employment relationships. Beyond the technology itself, what is genuinely novel and transformative about automation, AI or ‘platformisation’, which more mundane technologies might we be missing from the analysis? We welcome contributions of themes including: 1. The state, regulation and new technology 2. Historical research on the introduction of new technologies of work 3. Management, resistance, organization, and technology 4. Occupations, skills, professions, and technology 5. Inequalities (race, gender, (dis)ability) and technology 6. Methods for studying work and technology – towards a research agenda Submission details Registration will be £100 for full academic staff and £50 for PhD students, with an optional £25 for the conference meal. Dear colleagues: The International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (IBSTPI) is undertaking the task of updating its previously international validated and published set of Instructor Competencies (2004). Last fall, we began our initial validation study and we now are seeking additional responses. If you have instructor responsibilities and/or manage other staff with such responsibilities, we would be very grateful for your participation. (If you previously responded to the survey, we greatly appreciate your time, but there is no need to respond again.) Please note that the focus of this project is on instructors working with adult learners in career and vocational training, higher education, and organizational/workplace settings (including face-to-face, online, and blended modes of delivery). Numerous other studies and organizations have addressed the instructional and other competencies of K-12 teachers, which fall outside of IBSTPI’s scope. We expect that it should take approximately 30 minutes of your time. As an incentive to complete the survey, if you do so by the survey response deadline of September 30, 2019, you are eligible to participate in a drawing for a chance to win one of 10 complete sets of the IBSTPI competencies and performance statements. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have become more pervasive in the lives of people around the world. They are being used in various facets of daily life ranging from economics to health care, education to governance, family life to artistic expression. Diverse groups across the world interact with, are impacted by, and can shape the design of these technologies. The ICTD conference provides a forum for analyzing, critiquing, refining, and inventing new ways in which individuals, communities, and societies interact with and make use of these tools and platforms. There are multidisciplinary challenges associated with the design, engineering, application, and adoption of ICTs in low- and middle-income regions and/or other resource-constrained settings, with implications for design, policy, and practice. ACM FAT* 2020: Call for Critiquing/Rethinking FAT* Sessions and for Tutorials

The 2020 ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency in Computing Systems (ACM FAT* 2020) in Barcelona, Spain on January 27–30 2020 promises to be a lively event, with almost 300 submitted full papers across 5 tracks now under review. There is still time to get involved! This can be either through: 1. A session for the CRAFT programme — flexible sessions (e.g. panels, debates, unconferences, art exhibit) focussed on Critiquing and Rethinking Accountability, Fairness and Transparency (in the spirit of the CRACT workshop at NeurIPS). 2. A tutorial for the main conference. ## CRAFT: Critiquing and Rethinking Accountability, Fairness and Transparency ## The success of the field of fairness, accountability, and transparency has also attracted much critique and renewed attention to the limitations of achieving these goals in systems that implement statistical, machine learning, optimization, or autonomous computing techniques. A number of prominent studies acknowledge that addressing societal problems embedded in such computing systems may require more holistic approaches. In the spirit of reflection and response, we invite academics of all disciplines and people representing different communities of practice (including journalism, advocacy, organizing, education, art, public authorities) to contribute to a program that will be subject to its own review process and that will be embedded in the ACM FAT* conference. The Oxford Internet Institute (OII) is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher and Project Manager to work with the Fairwork Foundation <https://fair.work/>. This position provides an exciting opportunity to work with our team to co-develop standards <https://fair.work/principles/> of fair work and apply them to digital platforms in South Africa, India, Germany, and the UK. Applicants will have a relevant postgraduate degree in sociology, geography, anthropology, economics, development studies, or related fields. Excellent writing, presentation abilities, and analytical skills are also required. Applicants should be highly organised, be able to effectively manage multiple ongoing tasks, and have experience coordinating between a diverse group of stakeholders. As the successful candidate, you will be based at Fairwork Foundation within the Oxford Internet Institute. You will be part of a team of researchers based in the UK, South Africa, India, and Germany, and will collaborate with colleagues in those places to: co-develop thresholds and principles of fair work that apply to the platform economy; design strategies and carry out research to evaluate platforms against those thresholds; collaborate in the preparation of publications and research outputs to disseminate the evaluations of platforms against principles of fair work.
