Summer Institute in Technology Ethics (SITE) at Santa Clara University July 27-August 7, 2020, Santa Clara, California Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR IN-RESIDENCE STUDY. We are now accepting applications for the in-residence SITE program from qualified graduate and post-graduate students in Philosophy and closely related fields. Thanks to the generosity of the Templeton World Charity Foundation, Inc. through a Diverse Intelligences grant, a stipend will be provided to all applicants who complete the in-residence program. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting on January 10, 2020, closing on January 26, 2020 Decision notifications will be sent by February 17, 2020. The in-residence program for grad students and postdocs will be led by internationally recognized faculty experts in AI ethics. In parallel, Markkula Center experts in technology and AI ethics will offer a non-residence curriculum for working technologists. These two SITE cohorts will have multiple opportunities to interact and collaborate as well as engage with other stakeholders in public fora, with the goal of enhancing the rigor and interdisciplinary character of moral expertise in AI and technology ethics shared by academics and working technologists. Program Faculty The in-residence program is co-led by two distinguished experts in AI ethics: *Shannon Vallor* (currently the Regis and Dianne McKenna Professor of Philosophy at Santa Clara University, and the incoming Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh) and *John Sullins* (Professor of Philosophy at Sonoma State University and co-Director of the Center for Ethics, Law and Society). Vallor received the World Technology Award for Ethics in 2015, and in 2011 Sullins was honored with the Herbert A. Simon Award for Outstanding Research in Computing and Philosophy by the International Association for Computing and Philosophy. Both have worked as consulting ethicists with technologists in industry and academia, and have provided ethics expertise to policymakers and public agencies worldwide. Scholars should address what they see as important open questions concerning the exchange of messages and creation of meaning between people and physical or virtual digital interlocutors, toward progressing theoretical and/or practical breakthroughs in relation to communication with these technologies and the discourses surrounding them. The pre-conference is open to all sorts of scholarship, both empirical and theoretical, quantitative and qualitative. In light of the recent seismic activity in PR, we write this message in an attempt to activate a community of interest within the RISE Network to participate in strategic activities of service to the people of PR. As you know, the RISE Network is supposed to work as a mesonet of universities serving as radars of local and regional vulnerabilities to leave “no blind spots”. We have an opportunity to act in a preemptive manner: 1. Identifying relevant expertise that can have an impact at this time of high uncertainty in the island; 2. Engage universities that have been doing work in PR post Maria to gather information and knowledge about vulnerabilities found on the ground, either in terms of physical infrastructure and/or social organization, etc.; 3. Put together a rapid response team that can make itself available to local colleagues, managers, communities, etc, to collaborate in activities such as public service announcements, press conferences, consulting, or other activities that local stakeholders see appropriate. I feel we have a lot to offer in this time of uncertainty. This is what the RISE Network is meant to do. We are on our way to Washington DC to participate in the NCSE Annual Conference. ‘Asian Internet Histories’ - Call for papers (abstracts due 21 Feb, 2020) Special issue of the journal Internet Histories: Digital Technology, Culture & Society The future is history, as the great wisdom in many Asian cultures has long taught people the importance of looking backward in time for lessons, models, inspirations, and visions for the present and the future. This special issue provides a timely opportunity to showcase and reflect upon Asian Internet histories – both in their own right, but also as part of the wider emerging and maturing field of Internet histories and Internet and digital technology research. With its great diversity of places, society, languages, cultures, infrastructures, and economy, the Asian region contains roughly half of the world’s Internet users. Since the mid-twentieth century at least, the region prefigured and then incubated a wide range of forms of Internet technologies and associated digital cultures. Some of these Internet histories have been formulated, but many aspects of Asian Internet remain to be researched, documented and represented, theorized and enacted, considered, and debates. Accordingly, we welcome papers on a wide range of aspects of the histories of Asian Internets and digital cultures, including but not limited to: * Theories, concepts, and methods; * histories of particular Internet technologies or cultures in Asian location; * co-evolution of Asian languages, scripts, and Internet technology; * histories of Internet and digital technology policy and governance in Asia; * historiographies of Asian Internet or digital technology; * histories of mobile Internet and mobile apps in Asia; * studies of distinctively ‘Asian’ Internet technologies, formats, and cultures; * the long histories of Asian Internets and digital cultures; * new histories of Asian Internet; * Internet histories of particular groups, cultures, and social identities in Asia; * Asian Internet and social imaginaries. * Inter-Asian Internet and digital histories; * Asia as method and methods for/in Asia for Internet histories, including digital and computational methods; * analysis of the implications of Asian Internet histories for international and global discussions of Internet histories, forms, and futures. Our PhD program has just been allocated several more full-funded lines for PhD students in 2020-21, and we've reopened applications (american.edu/soc/admissions/graduate-apply.cfm) With stellar scholars such as Laura DeNardis, Aram Sinnreich, Saif Shahin, Filippo Trevisan, Ericka Menchen-Trevino and others, the program focuses on the intersection of media, technology and democracy. Our latest PhDs did theses on global inequality in internet exchange points, commercial uses of country-level domain names, Turkish government censorship and social media, and protest movements in India around India's digital identity card. Call for Papers: Special Issue on Refugees and Digital Work (10 Jan)

Dear colleagues, As a reminder, please consider submitting an article proposal for the following special issue: Special Issue on Refugees and Digital Work Aimed at: Development and Change Digital transformations are currently reshaping labour markets and employment opportunities around the world. Some suggest that online work platforms and the so-called 'gig economy' are now planetary in scope, promising access to work for anyone with an internet connection and some skills. However, to what extent does that hold true for the world's refugees? Parallel to this spread of digital opportunities, refugee self-reliance has now become one of the leading mantras in global refugee governance and international development. A plethora of programmes and initiatives have therefore tapped into a pool of digital opportunities for livelihood provision and skills training among displaced persons and host communities. However, their scope, methods, and outcomes remain underexplored in both academia and policy. This special issue will explore the diverse implications of this transformation on refugees, who often face severe restrictions to economic activity, financial inclusion, and a limited right to work. Particular consideration will be given to critical contributions that are rooted in empirical research and offer insights linking important debates in the international development literature on refugee economies, livelihoods, and digital work. Articles might address one of the following questions: What do particular case studies tell us about the unique relationship between forced displacement and digital economies? How does the inclusion of refugees, and a perspective grounded in their experience, change established views on digital economies and the future of decent work? How do digital economies reshape the role of work within increasingly prolonged conditions of forced displacement? What are the risks and opportunities of digital work for refugees? Other themes articles might address may include the following: * Digital refugee livelihoods and the decent work agenda * Digital skills training or remote job-mentoring * Freelancing and online entrepreneurialism * Working conditions and social protection * Informal means of digital work (e.g. social media platforms) * Refugees' involvement in the informal or illicit digital economy * Gender dimensions of digital work * Barriers to digital access and/or financial inclusion * The interaction between host country legal and social environments and digital economies These questions and issues are for guidance only and should not be considered exclusive of other important themes.
