*Apologies for cross-posting* Recounting Algorithms: A Workshop on Critical Algorithm Studies in the Library University of Toronto Mississauga Library May 7-8, 2020 https://www.recounting.net/ Call for Proposals How can libraries and archives best contribute to emerging critical discourses around algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence? Recounting Algorithms is a two-day workshop, supported by the Council on Library and Information Resources and hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga Library, that aims to enrich the intersections of critical algorithm studies and academic librarianship. Efforts to historicize, culturally situate, and foreground algorithmic systems as manifestations of bias and power have flourished recently. Work in this area has contributed important insights into the often oppressive operational conditions of systems used to automate tasks such as hiring, criminal risk assessment, supply chain management, web page ranking, and surveillance. The robustness of this growing field of inquiry is demonstrated in the varied institutional backgrounds of those who have contributed to it—they include journalists, artists, advocates, and academic researchers from across the disciplinary spectrum. Librarians and archivists are beginning to incorporate aspects of this critical discourse through projects that advance algorithmic literacy and initiatives, like Information Maintainers, that emphasize the intersection of information technology, data governance, and social justice. Relatedly, initiatives such as Emulation as a Service and Collections as Data suggest new services and infrastructures that might facilitate analysis of algorithmic systems. We invite proposals for pedagogical resources, creative projects, and library services that explore how libraries can support and build on investigations of algorithmic systems (including, machine learning and AI) and their enabling social conditions. While proposals should be oriented toward the library as a context for sustaining and supporting instruction and critical inquiry, we encourage submissions from non-librarians, particularly from educators, researchers, graduate students, artists, journalists and advocates. Potential themes include but are not limited to: * Projects to collect, preserve, and curate materials relevant to the study of algorithmic systems. * Resources for addressing emerging aspects of information and digital literacy related to machine learning and artificial intelligence. * Projects that reframe core values and practices (such as access and literacy) in light of work from critical algorithm studies. Invited workshop participants will present their proposals (in draft or prototype form) and engage in workshop activities to refine and develop them using constructive input from the group. Workshopped projects will be shared as an online resource following the workshop. Submissions Submissions should include a project abstract (500-word max) and bio (50 word max) for each presenter. New RA positions open in new technology and law at Oxford

Hi Everyone! I'm excited to announce that we have openings for two new part-time Research Assistants to work with myself and Dr Nicole Stremlau at the Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy (PCMLP) at the University of Oxford over the next 6 months. As a team, we do a lot of research about the new technologies and society, with a particular emphasis on social media, internet infrastructure, the development of policies and norms, and non-Western contexts, particularly in Africa. The first post, the PCMLP Research Assistant<https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/content/pcmlp-research-assistant-centre-socio-lega…>, would work on a project on new technologies and non-state law in areas of limited statehood, particularly in East Africa. The second, Research Assistant on Genetics, Law and Technology<https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/content/research-assistant-genetics-law-and-techno…>, would helps us develop a new research project into biotech companies, genetics, and law with a focus on non-invasive pre-natal testing. Both positions would be great for someone interested in gaining experience developing research in either of these areas. Both are part-time, UK-based, and would start as soon as possible. The event will provide a forum for artists, historians, philosophers, literary scholars, political scientists, and computer and data scientists to engage with the public, exploring how analytic techniques can unveil new understandings of culture, and how the proliferation of data in everyday life changes how culture is produced, distributed, and influenced. “The growing digitization of the cultural record has given us a unique opportunity to further explore how our new data generation, collection, and analysis can result in what we’re calling ‘cultured data,’” said Erin Glass, digital scholarship librarian at the UC San Diego Library. “This symposium will shed light on how data scientists and cultural professionals can work together to create a more just, informed, and culturally-rich future.” Organized by Glass and Robert Twomey, postdoctoral scholar at the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination and data science lecturer at UC San Diego, the symposium will feature two keynote speakers (one per day), four panels, an adjacent art exhibition, and sound performances. Speakers on each panel will share perspectives from academia, industry, and the arts, giving attendees a well-rounded viewpoint on the topic. The two-day symposium has been thoughtfully programmed to include both on- and off-campus locations: - Day 1 | Friday, February 7 | 1-7 PM - The first day of the symposium will be held at the Qualcomm Institute at UC San Diego and include a single panel on the datafication of the cultural record, a keynote, live performances by artists from Singapore and Nokia Bell Labs, a reception, and a self-guided tour of *STREAMING* <https://qi.ucsd.edu/events/event.php?id=2997>, an art exhibition which explores networked culture streams and their ecological and social costs. - Panel topic: - Datafication of the Cultural Record - Day 2 | Saturday, February 8 | 8:30 AM-7 PM - In an effort to engage the wider San Diego community, the second day of the symposium will be hosted off-campus at Bread & Salt <http://www.breadandsaltsandiego.com/>, a popular arts warehouse in Barrio Logan. The program includes three panels, a keynote, live performances, and a reception. - Panel topics: - Humanistic Theories of Data - A Generative Renaissance: New Data-Driven Modes of Authorship - Synthesis: The Future of Data and Culture The keynote speakers for the symposium are Shannon Mattern, Ph.D. <https://www.newschool.edu/nssr/faculty/shannon-mattern/>, professor of anthropology at the New School for Social Research, who will be speaking on Friday, and Jessica Marie Johnson, Ph.D. <https://history.jhu.edu/directory/jessica-johnson/>, assistant professor in the Department of History at Johns Hopkins University, who will be speaking on Saturday. Professor Mattern will examine the ecological aspects of technology and critical data reform, as well as the technical aspects of climate activism surrounding the Green New Deal. Professor Johnson will be discussing her critical research on race, slavery, data, and code studies.
