*6-year Postdoc in Computational Journalism / Media Audiences, Department of Media and Communications, LMU Munich, Germany* The Department of Media and Communication at LMU Munich offers a position, within the research and teaching unit of Professor Neil Thurman, as: Postdoc (m/f/d) in Computational Journalism / Media Audiences (subject to personal qualifications, the appointee will be appointed on the E 13 TV-L salary band, approximately €3837 - €5622 per month depending on experience) Terms: starting 1 April 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The period of employment is normally for a maximum of six years. The teaching requirement with this position is approximately 5 (academic) hours/week during the semesters (1 academic hour = 45 mins). The successful candidate will join Professor Thurman’s research and teaching unit, which is currently part-funded by the VolkswagenStiftung via two projects on computational journalism. These projects are researching topics including: the use of AI in local journalism; audiences’ perceptions of automated journalism; and the use of, and attitudes to, computational journalism in newsrooms. These projects involve collaboration with researchers, publishers, and technology providers in Germany and other countries. Professor Thurman’s research and teaching unit also focusses on media audience research more widely (‘ratings analysis’), including the behaviour of newspapers’, magazines’, and TV channels’ online and offline audiences. The unit is also involved in comparative journalism research through the Worlds of Journalism Study. Requirements: • University degree and PhD in media and communication or a related field. • Strong interest in computational journalism and/or researching media audiences. • Strong quantitative research skills (e.g. SPSS or R). • Understanding of, and experience with, a range of research methods (e.g. content analysis, surveys, interviewing, web analytics, survey experiments). • Fluency in English (written and oral). • A record of publication in the English language. Hi All: This is a big new initiative to support, recruit, and retain diverse faculty—one approach to solving the so-called “pipeline problem.” This is open to all disciplines, therefore appropriate to folks on this list. SUNY PRODiG Fellowship Application Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth across the SUNY Comprehensive Sector The Comprehensive Colleges of the State University of New York system (SUNY) invite applications for the PRODiG Pre/Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The SUNY PRODiG Fellowship Consortia represents a collaborative effort of the thirteen comprehensive colleges in the SUNY system (see below). Eligible candidates for this two-year program include late-stage ABDs or post-docs who are underrepresented minorities faculty in general and women faculty of all races in STEM fields. The focus of the collaborative is to introduce early-career diverse faculty to opportunities at a comprehensive college, and will provide outstanding mentorship and support to increase future success and retention as faculty. The program will provide intentional support toward degree completion, teaching experience in the individual’s field of expertise, and faculty development at one of the SUNY comprehensive colleges. PRODiG Fellows will receive a two-year non-renewable contract, travel allowances, summer research stipends, moving expenses, and reduced teaching load. Annual compensation is competitive. Fellows will be paired with a campus senior faculty member to help facilitate integration and support, and will be a part of a larger cohort of PRODiG Fellows across the SUNY system who will meet (both face-to-face and virtually) throughout the two-year fellowship. The fellowship is open to a wide range of fields. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral program in the U.S. or have completed an accredited doctoral program, and be authorized to work in the U.S. In order to be eligible, the applicant must have an approved dissertation proposal and have advanced to candidate status at their home institution (or have completed their dissertation). Post-doctoral applicants are also encouraged. Successful candidates will show evidence of outstanding academic achievement and promise as teachers and scholars. Candidates should have a capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of diverse students attending a comprehensive college. Applicants should submit a current C.V. and letter of intent describing the applicant's interest in teaching at a comprehensive college; a letter from the dissertation advisor commenting on the applicant’s performance, potential, and expected time to degree; and a transcript. CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS ----------------------------------------------------- ICWSM-2020 invites proposals for Workshop at the 14th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM). Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus -- providing an informal setting for active exchange among researchers and developers from a wide range of disciplines, including the social science and computer science. Workshops are an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas, bridging gaps between the social sciences and computing, and elucidating results of exploratory research. Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. To foster interaction and exchange of ideas, the workshops will be kept small, with up to 40 participants. The format of workshops will be determined by their organizers. We encourage workshops that promote different types of activities, including challenges, games, and brainstorming and networking sessions. We discourage workshops that are structured as “mini-conferences” dominated by long talks and short discussions. Workshops should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants and should also encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas. The workshop should have the potential to attract the interest of researchers in computer science and social science. Proposals involving people of different backgrounds in the organizing committee and addressing topics at the intersection of different disciplines will have a higher chance of acceptance. Workshop organizers who want to publish the papers from their workshop (or significant portions of it) will have the opportunity to do so through a venue TBD. A typical proposal should include no more than four co-chairs. * An indication as to whether the workshop should be considered for a half-day or full-day meeting. * A short abstract describing the scope and main objective of the workshop. *Call for Volume: Media, Development and Democracy: historical and current connections* *Editor: Heloisa Pait* *Deadline: February 15, 2019* Connections between the emergence of national democracies, economic development, and the introduction of mass media have been studied for many decades, but there are still missing links in this complex web. In 1949, Daniel Lerner suggested the existence of a relationship between new media and the modern mentality in developing nations. Although much criticized, his insights influenced optimistic views of the impact of television and the internet around the globe. Here we ask a different question: what is the impact of State censorship and material restrictions on the press, in countries that have been witnessing continuous economic development? Do restrictions on the functioning of the media in the formative period of a nation have long-term impacts on economic development? Looking from a different angle, can a limited labor market, with few formal vacancies in competitive firms, make literacy less rewarding, discouraging private investment in education? How do low literacy rates influence political culture and the nature of the public sphere in a modern society? In this volume, we would like to examine the multiple relationships between economic development, adoption of new media, literacy and education, and democratic culture. We are interested in studies of so-called developing countries, and in particular those where there have been restrictions on the printing press, such as colonial Brazil and the Ottoman Empire, or which somehow differ from the Northern European and North American model of media development. We welcome papers using a variety of methods, particularly those bridging interdisciplinary gaps. Our goal is to point to new paths in the understanding of the challenges to achieving a free and just society. We welcome papers that discuss public policy regarding educational or economic reforms within that larger investigative framework, as well as research on the experience of particular groups. Research is particularly welcome on women, the African diaspora, and/or Marranos. The article “Liberalism Without a Press: 18th Century Minas Geraes and the Roots of Brazilian Development”, by the editor, which appeared on volume 18 of Studies in Media and Communications, further elaborates on the possible relations between media, development and the public sphere. Editor: Heloisa Pait is a tenured professor of sociology at the São Paulo State University Julio de Mesquita Filho. She has written on Brazilian telenovelas, on the role of new media in political action and on higher education in Brazil and in the United States. Heloisa Pait is an active participant of public debates; she has recently launched Revista Pasmas, an online women’s magazine. Contributing editor: Renata Nagamine is a postdoctoral fellow in the Graduate Program in International Relations at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. She received her PhD in international law from the University of São Paulo Law School. Nagamine has worked as a researcher at the Brazilian Centre of Analysis and Planning (Cebrap) and was a Kathleen Fitzpatrick Visiting Fellow with the Laureate Program in International Law at the University of Melbourne in 2018. *** CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS *** 28th ACM International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2020) University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy, July 14-17, 2020 https://www.um.org/umap2020/ Proposals due: January 20, 2020 Submission site: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=umap2020 ACM UMAP 2020, the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or to groups of users, and which collect, represent, and model user information, is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The workshops provide a venue to discuss and explore emerging areas of User Modelling and Adaptive Hypermedia research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. In this edition, our goal is to have a balanced workshop program comprising different workshop formats, combining newly emerging, currently evolving and established research topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop schemas are possible, such as: - Working group meetings around a specific problem or topic; participants may be asked to submit a white paper or position statement. - Mini-conferences on specialized topics, having their own paper submission and review processes. - Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation. - Interactive discussion meetings focusing on subtopics of the UMAP general research topics. - Joint panels for different workshops. PROPOSAL FORMAT Workshop proposals should be submitted in PDF format via Easychair submission site: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=umap2020, not exceeding 5 pages and organized as follows: - Workshop title and acronym - Workshop chair(s), including affiliation, email address, homepage, and experiences in organizing such events - Abstract (up to 300 words) and topics of interest - Motivation on why the workshop is of particular interest at this time - Workshop format, discussing the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussions - Intended audience and expected number of participants - List of (potential) members of the program committee (at least 50% have to be confirmed at the time of the proposal) - Requested duration (half day or full day) - When available, past editions of the workshop, including URLs, a brief statement on the development of the workshop series, e.g., in terms of topics, number of paper submissions and participants, post-workshop publications over the years and acceptance statistics. INSTRUCTIONS We encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit workshop proposals. Researchers interested in submitting a workshop proposal are invited to contact us in advance, so we can help to design successful proposals. In particular, for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats, we are happy to assist in further developing and implementing the ideas. We strongly suggest involving organizers from different institutions, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. Increasingly digital exclusion also emerges with the active agency of state and corporate institutions using AI, smart city infrastructures, surveillance systems and even robotics. The aim of this post-conference is to make connections between a diverse range of disciplinary areas that have studied digital inequalities including digital inclusion research, data justice, critical race and digital media studies, data sovereignty and digital rights. Inequalities occur along multiple fronts including geography, social class, race, gender, age, and institutional systems and policies. They also can be shaped by powerful imaginaries of digitally-enabled futures promising efficiency, safety and economic prosperity. Data-driven and algorithmic processes related to smart technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), facial-recognition and robotics demand an extension from traditional concerns around digital exclusion to account for the potential to produce systemic abuses and extenuate disadvantage. The post-conference is an opportunity to examine the ways in which new technologies, including those that link digital networks and data via tracking tools and algorithms, add to the unequal distribution of digital benefits and perpetuate and even worsen inequalities in the expansion of the Digital Welfare State and other kinds of neoliberal, policing and techno-centric systems. It also examines the kinds of civic, open and public institutions – such as libraries, local governments, community media, and justice movements – that are increasingly important for ameliorating digital inequalities and countering imaginaries premised upon techno-centric fixes. Co-organised by the University of Sydney, University of Canberra, the University of Texas at Austin, Western Sydney University and the University of Melbourne, this Digital Inequalities Post-ICA Conference recontextualises digital inequalities within the context of emerging technologies and their affiliated social and political regimes, spaces and imaginaries. We seek to bring together researchers from multiple disciplinary perspectives to discuss the impact of digital inequalities in multiple sites. We welcome submissions from theoretical and empirical inquiries that examine the following areas: - Digital inclusion practices in social institutions - Inequalities and algorithmic governance in data driven society - Market logics and digital inequalities - The lived experience of digital exclusion - Alternative imaginaries for social justice and activism - Bias in algorithms, interface and design - Big data, smart technologies and surveillance - Intersectionality and digital inequalities - Digital media and algorithmic literacies in platform capitalism Submitting your abstract: Please submit abstracts for 15 minute paper presentations through this Form no later than *Feb 1, 2020*. Abstracts are limited to a maximum of 4,000 characters including spaces (approximately 500 words). Contributors will be selected by peer-review and will be notified of decisions on or before March 1, 2020. Authors are expected to attend the post-conference and present in person. We will explore the potential of a thematic publication of post-conference materials as a special issue in a journal or as an edited volume. All participants must register for the post-conference.
