Organized for the 14th time in a row, RCIS 2020 will be held from May 20-22, 2020, in Limassol, Cyprus. Potential presenters should keep in mind that there might be a varied audience, including novice graduate students, seasoned practitioners, and specialized researchers. Tutorial speakers should be prepared to cope with this diversity. The conference has specific slots for tutorials. They will be organized in sessions of 90 minutes with a free format. Tutorials run in parallel with other conference tracks, and participation is included in the attendees' conference fee. We invite proposals for tutorials that may address one or more of the listed topics below, although authors should not feel limited by them. Tutorial Chairs · Estefania Serral Asensio, KU Leuven, Belgium · Ignacio Panach, University of Valencia, Spain DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM The RCIS 2020 Doctoral Consortium is an opportunity for doctoral students to present, discuss and develop their research project in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of senior researchers. The Doctoral Consortium offers nice opportunities for PhD students. Firstly, the feedback received during the Doctoral Consortium will really benefit students who have defined their topic, research plan and have obtained early results, but who still have room for improving their longer-term plan. Secondly, students at all stages of their doctoral project can meet the welcoming RCIS community and widen their network of contacts. The Doctoral Consortium has the following objectives: · Provide a platform for students to present their work and to meet other peers and be familiar with different research topics and methods. · Provide feedback on students' current research and guidance on future research directions. · Promote the development of a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research and networking. · Contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other researchers. This track provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to present their work, interact with conference participants, and obtain feedback on on-going research. We invite two types of submissions: · Posters are intended to convey a research result and are not advertisements for commercial software packages. While posters need not describe completed work, they should report on research for which at least some preliminary results are available. · Demonstrations should directly and actively involve the exhibition and display of tools/prototypes and associated materials that illustrate research work in progress and serve as ground for discussion of research ideas. Nonhuman Vision: How Technologies and Animals See and Make Sense

Please submit your abstract by February 29 to: https://www.easst4s2020prague.org/call-for-papers-and-panels/ Yours, Adam Fish, Michael Richardson, Edgar Gomez Cruz, University of New South Wales *Nonhuman Vision: How Technologies and Animals See and Make Sense* Seeing—and the sense making that follows—is usually conceived as something humans alone do. Anthropocentric vision has been radically decentered by both computer vision and by multispecies ontologies, even if all-too-human biases stain the former and the latter is anything but surprising to indigenous people. And yet nonhuman vision remains under-examined and under-theorised in disciplines cognate to STS, where image and sense-making often remain the privilege of the human. This panel offers a corrective by advancing vivid case studies in non-human vision that center technologies and animals as agents of meaning-making. >From analogue photography to computer vision, technologies of vision see in nonhuman ways (Mackenzie and Munster 2019, Zylinska 2017). Photons are processed into computer readable code, filtered by algorithms, and correlated by machine learning to build so-called artificial intelligence. Animals, too, can see beyond, differently, and better than RGB, the human visual light spectrum (Barad 2007). While the chasm separating human vision from other animal vision is vast, efforts towards remembering and forging inter-species companionship are essential to responding to the species extinction and climate crisis (Haraway 2016). Seeing as non-human–technological or animal–uniquely challenges key concepts in media studies: who or what makes sense of symbols. Across the assembled papers, this panel explores some of the crucial technical, affective, multi-species and multi-modal ways in which nonhuman vision figures in the contemporary moment. In doing so, it brings expertise in STS, new materialism, visual culture, media arts, and cultural studies to the study of communication and technology. Collectively, we question the politics of vision: who or what sees who? What, how, and when? What or who can avoid being seen, provide consent, and avoid the gaze? Interest in AoIR2020 submission on industry-academia data sharing?

Hi all - I'm brainstorming some kind of session at #AoIR2020 on the challenges of data sharing between industry and academia. This has lots of flavors, but includes issues related to changes in APIs that might limit researchers' access to data, attempts to formalize data sharing through arrangements like Social Science One, or researchers deciding to just hack & scrape their way to data. What might a session at #AoIR2020 on this topic look like, and what would be helpful for the community? I can envision a workshop on the topic, or just a roundtable session discussing it. I can envision having researchers and industry folks both there. But what makes sense? Anyone interested in exploring this with me?
