The topics include but are not limited to research and design ethics and genuine participation of ‘users’ as partners in conducting research, designing and implementing interventions (be it social, cultural or technical). This will be used to inform new guidelines and approaches to ethnographic fieldwork that could prove more beneficial in politically charged, infrastructural challenged and underfunded regions. We invite anyone interested in participating to submit a two to four-page position paper. Papers should critically reflect upon the authors’ experiences from the field or research area related to challenges they face when conducting ethnographic field work. Authors’ prior experience does not have to be specifically concerned with these challenges, but the position papers will be expected to demonstrate how their experience is relevant to the workshop’s topic and can be applied within the workshops’ context. Position papers will be reviewed based on relevance and potential for contribution to the workshop. Details regarding presentations of work will be provided with acceptance notifications. Call for Papers: CySoc 2020 - International Workshop on Cyber Social Threats @ICWSM 2020 Deadline: April 8, 2020 Website: CySoc.aiisc.ai The International Workshop on Cyber Social Threats, CySoc 2020, will be held in conjunction with the 14th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM 2020) on June 8, 2020, in Atlanta, USA. This workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners in computer and social sciences from both academia and industry to exchange ideas on understanding the multi-faceted social, psychological, cultural, emotional, communicative, and linguistic aspects of harmful content while leading the discussion on building novel computational methods to reliably detect, derive meaning, interpret, understand and counter them. We welcome papers for consideration, employing quantitative and/or qualitative, analytical, theoretical approaches examining a diverse range of issues related to online harmful communications. We are pleased to announce the publication of the edited book: *Disability, Media, and Representations: Other Bodies* Edited by Jacob Johanssen (St. Mary's University) and Diana Garrisi (Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University) Routledge Research in Disability and Media Studies (Series Editor: Professor Katie Ellis) https://www.routledge.com/Disability-Media-and-Representations-Other-Bodies… Bringing together scholars from around the world to research the intersection between media and disability, this edited collection aims to offer an interdisciplinary exploration and critique of print, broadcast and online representations of physical and mental impairments. Drawing on a wide range of case studies addressing how people can be ‘othered’ in contemporary media, the chapters focus on analyses of hateful discourses about disability on Reddit, news coverage of disability and education, media access of individuals with disabilities, the logic of memes and brain tumour on Twitter, celebrity and Down Syndrome on Instagram, disability in TV drama, the metaphor of disability for the nation; as well as an autoethnography of treatment of breast cancer. Providing a much-needed global perspective, Disability, Media, and Representations examines the relationship between self-representation and representations in either reinforcing or debunking myths around disability, and ways in which academic discourse can be differently articulated to study the relationship between media and disability. Nick is well known for his work on algorithm auditing and the use of computers in the news. TITLE The Role of Algorithmic Intermediaries in Shaping Attention to News ABSTRACT As people seek news information online, platforms like Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon and other news aggregators mediate and influence a huge portion of human attention, acting as algorithmic gatekeepers and curators. But as private platforms, there are few public details about how the algorithms of these information intermediaries serve to drive public exposure and salience of news information. What types and sources of news are made available and prioritized, what’s the quality of that information, and are there diverse perspectives represented in the algorithmic curation of major platforms? This talk will address these questions by presenting the results of several audit studies of algorithmic news intermediaries. These studies begin to shed light on the role such intermediaries play in impacting human attention towards the news. Implications for platform power, governance, and the economic health and competitiveness in the larger news ecosystem will be discussed. SPEAKER BIO Nicholas Diakopoulos (http://www.nickdiakopoulos.com/) is an Assistant Professor in Communication Studies and Computer Science (by courtesy) at Northwestern University where he directs the Computational Journalism Lab. He is also a Tow Fellow at Columbia University School of Journalism as well as Associate Professor II at the University of Bergen Department of Information Science and Media Studies. His research focuses on computational journalism, including aspects of automation and algorithms in news production, algorithmic accountability and transparency, and social media in news contexts. He is the author of Automating the News: How Algorithms are Rewriting the Media, published by Harvard University Press in 2019. Recently he was a resident researcher in the Computational Political Journalism Lab at the Washington Post. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and his Sc.B. degree in Computer Engineering from Brown University.
