Dear AoiR friends and colleagues We hope this finds you and your loved one safe and well in this strange times. **apologies for cross-posting, but we need your help to spread the word** Data are at the core of the narration of the pandemic. Numbers affect our ability to care, share empathy, and donate to relief efforts and emergency services. Numbers are the condition of existence of the problem, and of a country or given social reality on the global map of concerns. Yet most countries from the so-called Global South are virtually absent from this number-based narration of the pandemic, and so are many invisible populations like migrants. Why, and with what consequences? To answer this and many other pressing questions, we have launched a new collaborative space: COVID-19 from the margins. The multilingual blog COVID-19 from the margins [0] invites contributions reflecting on the first pandemic of the datafied society as it intersects situations of marginality, inequality, alterity, poverty but also resistance and subversion. We are particularly happy to announce that thanks to the support of the Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis (University of Amsterdam), we are currently able to ***offer a small compensation to authors of accepted blog posts*** who are in precarious job conditions, are students or unemployed, and/or from the Global South. [CANCELLED] LSE Digital Ethnography Collective AoIR Satellite Event

Hello all, It is with sadness that the LSE Digital Ethnography Collective announces the cancellation of our symposium 'Looking forward, looking back: Digital ethnography in 2020', due to take place on 26th October 2020. As the AoIR annual conference is now a virtual event, and this symposium was designed specifically as an AoIR satellite event, it does not make sense to hold this symposium in person. We have also decided not to turn this into a virtual event, as the main AoIR conference will now be spread over a period of two weeks and we felt it would be too much to add this as well. We wanted to announce this ASAP ahead of the submission deadline of 29th May so that people do not waste their time writing abstracts. We are very sorry that this event will not be going ahead, as we were really looking forward to it. But in this time of uncertainty it makes little sense to be organising IRL events. We hope that in the future when the dust has settled we will be able to hold this symposium. In the 1990s researchers begun grappling with issues regarding the cultural impacts of the Internet and how to go about conducting ethnographic research in/on ‘virtual’ spaces. Since then, we have seen significant technological and cultural shifts, most notably the fact that in 2020 smartphones are commonplace and social media platforms have become a ubiquitous part of everyday life in many parts of the world. Whilst holding on to the valuable insights of earlier research, digital ethnographers are required to remain methodologically agile in order to keep up with rapidly changing socio-technological contexts. This one-day symposium hosted by the LSE Digital Ethnography Collective invites participants to discuss the state of digital ethnographic research in 2020, by both reaching back into its rich history and thinking about future directions. We are inviting submissions spanning from ‘finished product’ empirical work to presentations addressing common concerns in the practise of carrying out digital ethnographic research (methods, ethics, self-reflexivity etc.) in the hopes that the day will generate both interesting and useful conversations amongst attendees. The LSE Digital Ethnography Collective is an interdisciplinary group exploring the intersections of digital culture and ethnographic methods, with the aim to establish a global community of scholars of digital ethnography and to work through challenges in this growing subdiscipline. Researchers passionate about digital ethnography are dispersed around the globe, and whilst we foster international collaboration via our livestreams and mailing list, it’s always a pleasure to get together IRL! With this in mind, we are hosting this symposium at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on Monday 26th October 2020. There is a sizeable overlap of membership between the LSE Digital Ethnography Collective and the Association of Internet Researchers and so we have arranged this as a ‘satellite event’ to the AoIR Annual Conference in the hopes that AoIR attendees interested in attending will be able to stop over in London before heading on the main conference in Dublin. How might we use this moment to reflect on the relation between massive and microscopic ways of knowing? Anne Harris and I are launching a short turnaround project in association with the journal of Qualitative Inquiry. We invite participants into an experimental and collaborative process of using autoethnographic methods to consider how these relationships are characterized, understood, and being enacted during this pandemic, by paying attention to dynamics of scale— how the microscopic materializes, how to consider part as whole, or whole as granular, or how the massive/global collides or interweaves with the microscopic/granular as we make sense. Participant-author-makers will propose to be a part of the process by submitting a 300 word abstract with an idea (Due May 5, 2020). We will then workshop our ideas through a series of provocations and mini-masterclasses, moving toward (but not limited to) a special issue of _Qualitative Inquiry_. This is an experimental, speculative coming-together, so those with a tolerance for ambiguity are urged to apply. The timeline is intensive and short because we seek to capitalize on lived experience as it is happening now or happened recently. No former experience in autoethnography is required. People from outside and inside academic spheres are welcome. Feel free to spread this call as widely as possible. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ IMMERSIVE LEARNING PROJECT SHOWCASE & COMPETITION +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ [ PDF version available here: https://bit.ly/2VZXPkb ] The Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN) welcomes submissions for its Immersive Learning Project Showcase & Competition as part of the iLRN 2020 Virtual Conference (http://immersivelrn.org/ilrn2020) This is an opportunity for academics, students, professionals, and institutions/organizations to gain widespread exposure and acclaim for their innovative work in developing VR/AR/MR (XR) and immersive experiences that support learning in a range of sectors and contexts, as well as to have the work considered for inclusion in the Collection of Exemplars that is being developed as part of The State of XR and Immersive Learning project. Showcase & Competition contributions may be in the form of: - a 2D or 360-degree video demonstration/tour/walkthrough of the project/experience; - a 2D web-based gallery of graphics, animations, and/or other multimedia artifacts; - an interactive 3D virtual world or environment highlighting and demonstrating the key features and elements of the project/experience; - a combination of any of the above. In the first instance, prospective contributors are asked to complete the proposal form no later than May 11, 2020, and those who are shortlisted to participate will be contacted by May 18, 2020 with further instructions. Shortlisted contributors must register for the conference by May 23, 2020 and will have until June 15, 2020 to prepare their Showcase contribution. #### Proposal Shortlisting and Preparation of Showcase Contributions #### The process used to shortlist and select proposals to progress to the Showcase & Competition will give preference to individuals and teams who will also be delivering papers/presentations at the virtual conference that are related to their intended Showcase & Competition contributions. Each individual or team contributor whose proposal is selected will be assigned a WebXR space in which to construct their Showcase contribution (exhibit) by populating it with a variety of media types and artifacts. A link to the experience itself, or to a website/portal from which it can be downloaded, may also optionally be included, but only if it is freely accessible and not behind a paywall. Additionally, subject to space availability, it may be possible for contributors to supply Unity assets for porting into the virtual conference venue where the conference activities will take place. Showcase & Competition contributors must register for and attend the conference, and will need to make themselves available to meet and present to/talk with conference attendees about their projects at designated times during the conference program schedule. Awards will be presented for the best contributions, and individuals/teams whose projects are selected for the State of XR and Immersive Learning Exemplar Collection will receive Certificates of Commendation. #### Judging Criteria #### Contributions will be evaluated based on the following key criteria: 1. Demonstration of appropriate and innovative use of the unique affordances of the relevant technologies/media (in both the project being showcased as well as the Showcase contribution itself); 2. Application of established and sound learning/instructional design principles; 3. Adoption of a learning-science-informed and research-grounded approach to the design and development process; 4. Overall contribution to research and/or practice in the field of XR and immersive learning. Prof. Dr. Christoph Trattner. Project proposals on Recommender Systems in the context of Media (e.g., News Recommender Systems) and Health (e.g., Food Recommender Systems) are prioritized. We are particularly searching for candidates willing to work on Biases, Fairness and Trust in News and Health Recommender Systems, either from an Interface or algorithmic perspective. Other domains and problems may be also considered if the candidate is particularly qualified and the problem is of relevance for society and the lab. *Qualifications and personal qualities:* * The applicant must hold a master's degree in Information Science, Informatics, or equivalent, and the degree has to be completed by the application deadline * Strong programming skills are a must * Background within data science and recommender systems is an advantage * The requirements are generally grade B or better on Master thesis and for the Master degree in total * Experience from scientific work (e.g., previous publications) is an advantage * Great motivation for research, interest in the topic and good knowledge of relevant theory and methods * As an applicant you should be able to work independently * Proficiency in both written and oral English *Important:* A research proposal of 5-8 pages must accompany the application. The proposal should present the topic, the research problem(s) and choice of theory and methods. The proposal should also include a progress plan for the different parts of the project. A budget of running costs should be included. Admittance to the PhD-programme will be based on the research proposal.
