Today, the Association of Internet Researchers joins in the worldwide movements to #ShutDownAcademia and #Strike4BlackLives. We condemn anti-Black racism and brutality and support those who have been participating in demonstrations and working against systemic racism. We recognize the traumatic impact the recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and so many others have had - on many of us, and on Black colleagues in particular. State violence against Black communities is connected to colonialist histories, and we recognize that white supremacy and systems of oppression are similarly woven into the systems of higher education. As part of our organization’s commitment to anti-racist pedagogy and scholarship, we center the voices and scholarship of Black and Brown colleagues, and encourage taking this day to self-educate and to consider how structural racism has played out, and continues to play out, in scholarship and pedagogies. In solidarity, members and friends of the Association have been compiling a list of resources for critical race and internet studies. *Call for Papers: Rethinking Digital Labour * Call for submissions to a special collection in *The Economic and Labour Relations Review* Abstract submission deadline: 15 August 2020 Full paper submission deadline: 15 January 2021 Guest Editor: Bingqing Xia (East China Normal University) A number of important topics, themes and concepts frequently recur in studies of digital labour, such as exploitation, precariousness (Standing 2011), ‘the gig economy’ (Graham 2019), and unpaid labour, including those of digital ‘users’ (Terranova 2004) and audiences. Concepts of immaterial, affective and emotional labour have been widely prevalent (Hardt and Negri 2000, 2005). This first generation of critical research has drawn, often valuably so, on a variety of Marxist, post-structuralist and Weberian sources to question prevailing neo-liberal and centrist models centred on values of efficiency and the supposed empowerment of workers and users. Some debates in East Asia follow this tendency to explore labour issues in the digital economy, such as platform workers (Chen and Kimura 2019, Chen 2018, Steinberg 2019, Shibata 2019) and workers in the technology assembly factories (Pun 2005, Qiu 2016, Sacchetto and Andrijasevic, 2015). While these topics, themes and concepts have been beneficial in establishing a basis for critique, there is a danger that, at least in the form they have been applied, they may become rather familiar and in some cases potentially even a little stale. If so, this suggests a need to renew critique of digital labour, as the digital realm stabilizes around a set of key global players and platforms and as labour activists continue to face serious obstacles to success in an era of authoritarian populism. With its broad scale in the valorization of digital work, here, we concentrate our arguments on the professional workers in the information and communication technologies (ICT) related industries. Some digital labour debates in East Asia suggest certain issues that may contribute to renewal. For example, some authors have examined how creative labour in digital domains, such as creative labour in the ‘platform capitalism’ (Stevens 2019, Luthje 2019) and digital entrepreneurs (Leung and Cossu 2019), offers the bottom-up potential of innovation. It is important to address a renewed critique that beyond the rigid theoretical binaries that have long characterized digital labour debates on exploitation and labour agency. We don’t yet know the socio-economic consequences of COVID-19, but it may well make worse the quality of the working life of some platform workers, such as ride-hailing and food delivery workers, who often lack adequate access to employment-insurance benefits or sick leave. COVID-19 may change current digital labour debates in East Asia, including how to reform labour markets, welfare systems, and government policies to ensure greater dignity of digital working lives. It is necessary to seek for certain agents supporting digital labourers’ own rights that may lead to an alternative of capitalism. We call for papers that seek to move beyond the theoretical and conceptual vocabulary that has dominated the first two decades of critical research on digital labour. We have particular interests in research exploring the agency beyond the paradigm on exploitation in East Asia, such as the socio-cultural dynamics of digital labour, reproduction of global inequality through digital work, and possible responses, the agents originate from inequalities of gender, race, and ethnicity. We also welcome papers addressing how COVID-19 may change the current digital labour debates in East Asia. The print version of the resulting journal issue will be published in Volume 32(3) of *The Economic and Labour Relations Review*, September 2021, although individual articles may be published earlier as accepted. In line with *ELRR* policy of recognising the particular difficulties faced by women and First Nations/minority scholars during COVID-19 isolation, the journal will be looking for balanced representation in the published collection, and will continue to consider relevant high-quality submissions for publication in subsequent issues in cases where authors were prevented by COVID-19 related circumstances from meeting the relevant deadlines Among the issues that might be explored are the following, many of which have certainly been present in earlier research, but often in an unconsolidated or under-developed way. This list is only indicative, and we would welcome fresh ideas from any area of critical research, and from any critical perspective. l Changes in digital labour regulation and policy l Immigrant digital labour markets and justice for migrant digital workers l Agency initiated from inequalities of gender, race and ethnicity that may lead to an alternative to or form of capitalism l Questions of *working dignity* in digital domains l Maker culture and digital entrepreneurship l Socio-cultural dynamics of digital labour l Crises of digital work l Alternative approaches to contesting digital work l Theories of subjectivity and agency in relation to digital labour that build on or go beyond the Marxist paradigm l Reproduction of social/global inequality through digital work and possible responses Papers that draw on empirical research and theoretical overviews are equally welcome. We particularly welcome articles that engage with the topic of digital labour in East Asia. Dear AoIRists, cc. to Maura Conway, Our colleagues at the VOX-POL project, headed by Maura Conway, have recently gathered a page of "Researcher Resources" - "a directory of tools, datasets, events and other useful links, which are collected and grouped by topic." This is a very valuable collection indeed, including, e.g., a library of resources, datasets and tools, and so on. Allow me to particularly call attention to the first subset on ethics, which includes both the AoIR and NESH guidelines - as well as more specific reports and resources developed and taken up over the course of the venerable VOX-POL project. [In the name of full disclosure, both I and Elizabeth Buchanan served as ethics advisors to the project.] A second subset focuses on "Researcher Welfare 1: Privacy and Security." A defining thematic in the 3.0 revisions of the AoIR ethics guidelines is precisely the rising importance of "protecting the researcher." I think we made a good start in collecting resources for doing so - some of which are also included here: but the additional resources listed here will be very valuable indeed for researchers needing to take ever greater care against becoming a target of the researched. CFP: #DLFteach Toolkit 2.0 on Immersive Technologies in Higher Education

The DLF Digital Library Pedagogy <https://wiki.diglib.org/Pedagogy> group invites all interested digital library pedagogy practitioners to contribute to an immersive technologies centered #DLFteach Toolkit, an online, open resource focused on lesson plans and concrete instructional strategies. Further information about the scope and planned work scheduled is found below. We welcome practitioners from all digital library settings, roles, and career stages. Experience is less important than the willingness to be involved in the process of creating this resource. DLF Teach Toolkit 1.0 has been published online and is available for view<https://dlfteach.pubpub.org/toolkit>. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, both the deadlines for contributor submissions to this toolkit and the publishing workflow will progress on a rolling basis. To accommodate difficulties for contributors, including limitations on testing lesson plans in the Fall 2020 semester, we will accept submissions to undergo editorial revision over three quarters of the 2020 year, and we expect to publish toolkits on a flexible basis in 2021. Click here to review the full call for participation, anticipated work schedule, and the various roles available beyond submitting lesson plans.<https://wiki.diglib.org/Pedagogy:Toolkit_2.0_CFP> Scope As 3D/VR technology becomes relevant to a wide range of scholarly disciplines and teaching context, libraries are proving well-suited to coordinating the dissemination and integration of this technology across the curriculum. We seek to coordinate a collection of instructional resources that recognizes and reflects the diversity of context and practice within this broad, emerging field. We take as models for the DLF Teach Toolkit the popular Library Instruction Cookbook (eds. Sittler and Cook) and Critical Library Pedagogy Handbook (eds. Pagowsky and McElroy). We plan to adopt a template for submissions, as modeled by the Collections as Data Facets<https://collectionsasdata.github.io/facets/> project. We envision that contributions will be lesson-plan like: while they won't necessarily be full lesson plans, they should focus on providing examples of instructional goals and activities that can be put into practice. We hope to encourage collaborations that connect participants with new areas of expertise, especially between practitioners of different levels of experience in different areas. Prospective contributors may elect individual authorship, form their own collaborative pairs or groups, or request to be paired with a collaborator of complementary interest by an Editor. Authors will be connected with a Section Editor who will facilitate the process. Theme The #DLFteach Toolkit 2.0 will focus on lesson plans to facilitate disciplinary and interdisciplinary work engaged with 3D technology. For our purposes, 3D technology includes, but is not limited to Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies, 3D modeling software, and 3D game engines, as well as 3D printers and extruders. This proposal builds on the Immersive Pedagogy symposium, which was organized by 2017-19 CLIR postdoctoral fellows. Immersive Pedagogy: 3D Technology Teaching and Learning Symposium for Humanities Practitioners<https://events.library.cmu.edu/immersive-pedagogy/> was held at Carnegie Mellon University on June 26-27, 2019 assembling practitioners representing libraries, academic departments, and professionals who developed teaching materials for 3D/VR/AR, through interactive workshops. The workshops aimed to produce materials that are shareable with a broader audience, including syllabi and lesson plans, as well as templates that could be adapted in a variety of pedagogical settings. 3D technology, while becoming affordable for institutions in the past few years, is often adopted without a clear and responsible plan for pedagogical use. The symposium tackled challenges and affordances of critical teaching materials for immersive pedagogy. We invite further contributions for the #DLFteach Toolkit that aim to be attentive to decolonial methodologies, intersectionality, accessibility, and other critical/humanistic contexts in presenting practical applications of technology for scholarship and pedagogy. Examples of Contributions * An introduction to building 3D/AR/VR environments for use in the Humanities classroom * A multi-session outline or description of embedded approach to combining archival research with a project in immersive technology * Activities to critically evaluate a digital resource in 3D (accessibility, decolonial theory, representation of underrepresented people and histories, or through other theoretical lenses) * Lesson plans using less expensive forms of immersive technology like phone-based headsets * Critical 3D digital humanities methods that incorporate intersectional feminist and decolonial approaches * Exercise that has students work with underrepresented archives to develop ideas for digital projects that highlight the lives and histories of women and people of color * Lesson plans or resources for rapid response online pedagogy (transitioning the face-to-face course to an online course that uses immersive pedagogy) * Models for augmenting traditional face-to-face courses with immersive elements and components. * Best practices for creating immersive components of museum exhibits * A workshop on creating or using immersive technology for community histories and archives * Combining archival research with a 3D digital project to enhance learning and accessibility * Creating critical 3D digital exhibits or archives * Discussion assignments to critically evaluate the claim that immersive technology can act as an 'empathy machine' * Matching tools and methods with learning goals * Critical information literacy and critical digital library pedagogy * Universal design principles and learner-centred teaching strategies for immersive technology * Creating immersive technology in languages other than English Chris J.
