Sign-up at https://forms.gle/NqUU9igLtfCZGWvW7. About the talk: Life in the UK has reached peak digital. Social media and smartphones are everywhere. Such pervasive connectivity may have its benefits but it also has no shortage of critics. Yet beyond pure condemnation (or celebration), how can we make sense of the mediated, always-on lives many of us lead? And how can we understand the varied practices of digital disconnection that operate within this technosocial moment of hyperconnectivity? This talk analyses connection and disconnection together and in relation in order to more fully understand the paradoxes and ambivalences of today’s connectivity culture. Empirically, it is grounded in findings from my Quitting Social Media project: a three-year, mixed-methods exploration of how people in the UK and further afield have navigated this historical moment of social media and smartphone hegemony. What emerges is a practically and affectively complex portrait of life with the digital, which I argue necessitates a radical rethinking of ‘choice’ and ‘agency’. About the speaker: Zeena Feldman is Senior Lecturer in Digital Culture in the Department of Digital Humanities, King’s College London, where she runs the Quitting Social Media project. Her interdisciplinary research examines the relationship between digital technologies and everyday life. She has published widely, including on the sharing economy, online communities, queer visual culture, digital detox and mental health apps. She is co-editor, with Deborah Lupton, of Digital Food Cultures (Routledge, 2020) and editor of Art & the Politics of Visibility (IB Tauris, 2017).

Please join us at the CAMRI seminar Thursday this week Algorithmic Desire and the Ideology of Twenty-First Century Capitalism Matthew Flisfeder (University of Winnipeg) Date: Thursday, 9 December 2021 Time: 17.00-19.00 (UK time) Location: Online event - Zoom Meeting (please register so that we can send you the Zoom link) Registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/algorithmic-desire-and-the-ideology-of-twent… Much has been written about the more deleterious dimensions of social media websites, platforms, and apps, from Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, to Instagram and Snapchat, dating apps like Tinder, and more recent apps like TikTok. We are all more than familiar with critiques of social media corporate and government surveillance, the commodification, expropriation and exploitation of user-provided data, the tailoring and curation of content, and of course recent dilemmas focused on fake news tying our use of social media to international cyberwarfare. Given all of these potential problems, why don’t we just give up and abandon our attachment to social media? How might we grapple with the exploitative and anti-democratic aspects of social media set against the kinds of enjoyment that it procures? Despite some of these problems, Matthew Flisfeder argues that social media helps us to grasp the co-ordinates, not merely of our trouble with machines and new media, but with the larger totality of twenty-first century capitalism. Conceiving social media as a central metaphor for our historical present, Flisfeder proposes extending the concept to its fullest potentials. Instead of abandoning the concept, Flisfeder argues that the term social media helps us to render what is problematic about contemporary neoliberal capitalism, proposing that it is only by pursuing and failing to achieve a truly authentic social media as our goal that we are best positioned to understand the real contradictions of our time, as well as dominant forms of subjectivity, consciousness, and enjoyment. Biography Matthew Flisfeder is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Communications at The University of Winnipeg (Canada). He is the author of Algorithmic Desire: Toward a New Structuralist Theory of Social Media (Northwestern UP 2021), Postmodern Theory and Blade Runner (Bloomsbury 2017), The Symbolic, The Sublime, and Slavoj Žižek’s Theory of Film (Palgrave Macmillan 2012), and co-editor of Žižek and Media Studies: A Reader (Palgrave Macmillan 2014). Furthermore, MDPI Sensors will sponsor a Best Paper Award with the amount of 400 CHF. Special Tracks Proposals GoodIT 2022 will feature special tracks whose aim is to focus on a specific topic of interest related to the overall scope of the conference. We solicit proposals for special tracks to be held within the main conference and whose publications will be included in the conference proceedings. Tracks proposals can focus on any contemporary themes that highlight social good aspects in the design, implementation, deployment, securing, and evaluation of IT technologies. Special Track Proposal Format A special track proposal must contain the following information: • Title of the special track. • The names of the organizers (indicatively, two) with affiliations, contact information, and a single paragraph of a brief bio. • A short description of the scope and topics of the track (max 1/2 page) and a brief explanation of: (1) why the topic is timely and important; (2) why the topic is related to the conference’s main theme; (3) why the track may attract a significant number of submissions of good quality. • Indication if a journal special issue is associated with the track, possibly with information on the process of selecting papers. • The plan to disseminate the call for papers of the special track for achieving a reasonable number of paper submissions (a list of emailing lists will help). • A tentative Program Committee list. • A draft Call for Papers (max 1 page). Publication Papers submitted to each particular track have to satisfy the same criteria as for the main conference. They must be original works and must not have been previously published. They have to be peer-reviewed by the track's Program Committee (at least three reviews per submitted paper are required). The final version of papers must follow the formatting instructions of the main conference (https://cyprusconferences.org/goodit2022/index.php/authors/) At least one of the authors of all accepted papers must register and present the work at the conference; otherwise, the paper will not be published in the proceedings. All accepted and presented papers will be included in the conference proceedings published in the ACM Digital Library. The special track may provide an option for publishing extended versions of selected papers in a special issue of a journal. Hi All, The Institute of Digital Technologies for Communication at USI-Universita’ della Svizzera italiana (Lugano, Switzerland) invites applications for one funded Ph.D. position in Communication Sciences, titled "Heritage and Innovation". The research project will focus on the digitalization of a brand's fashion heritage and its related digital and phygital communication practices. The doctoral student will be enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Communication Sciences. He/she will work under the scientific supervision of prof. Lorenzo Cantoni.
