Dear Air-L members: This year I joined Art+Feminism to research guidelines on using reliable sources in French, English and Spanish Wikipedias. Our project used an intersectional feminist methodology to address how Wikipedia trainers involved in the Art+Feminism movement approach the reliable source guidelines in French, English and Spanish Wikipedias. Our rigorous analysis ends with recommendations for more inclusive and diverse Wikipedias. Then the Special Session on AAL is the perfect opportunity for you to be involved in an ecosystem that promotes active and healthy ageing. This special session at the IHAW 2021 conference aims to bring together the community of healthy ageing to present their results and to discuss the existing opportunities in health technology and reflect on the future of ageing well in the digital world. You will be presented with the opportunity to meet and discuss with several stakeholders from universities, industry, regional and national authorities, private companies working with older adults and many more. Investigations Conclude: Canadian Military Broke the Rules

Dear Friends, Some of you may recall back in October last year I published an article revealing <https://emma-briant.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e7f9f1379bf0f0311ebb…> a company called Emic, spun off from the Cambridge Analytica parent SCL, had been hired by several western militaries in the last few years to train their information operations and public affairs officers - despite the ongoing investigations into the linked firms. This made big news particularly in Canada, where the military was already in the middle of a breaking scandal for targeting its own citizens during the pandemic with methods normally reserved for foreign psychological operations. I am delighted to be able to bring you an update... the Canadian parliament and military took it very seriously and launched no less than four investigations into what we revealed which have just concluded. Here is reporting of the outcome of the investigations from David Pugliese 'Military violated rules by collecting information on Canadians, conducting propaganda during pandemic: report <https://emma-briant.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e7f9f1379bf0f0311ebb…>' in the Ottawa Citizen. The reports concluded not only were rules not followed, but senior leaders also had no authority to conduct such initiatives. As reported, a June 9 document signed by acting Chief of the Defence Staff Lt.-Gen. Wayne Eyre and Deputy Minister Jody Thomas stated that “Errors conducted during domestic operations and training, and sometimes insular mindsets at various echelons, have eroded public confidence in the institution”. This is especially important to see because I was attacked and there was a lot of pushback from those seeking to protect people involved. Brig Gen. Jay Janzen who was reported to have overseen these developments in propaganda called them "on the leading edge." It is vital that abandonment of democratic values and restraint not become recast as innovation. I wrote here <https://emma-briant.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e7f9f1379bf0f0311ebb…>about the importance of the need for other NATO governments learning from this example and indeed I hope whoever becomes future Director of the Communications Division at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) will take the outcome here on board following Mark Laity's departure from his important NATO role. Militaries must learn on their feet to respond to disinformation and the most important lesson here is in a democracy they must give citizens reason to trust in their good conduct. Dear Researcher, We (Neil Shah, Jerry Zitao Liu, Lei Li) are co-organizing WSDM Cup 2022 <https://www.wsdm-conference.org/2022/call-for-wsdm-cup-proposals/>, a machine learning competition-style event co-located with the leading WSDM conference (International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining). The conference has high-visibility, and is regularly attended by experts in the field. We are looking for competition tasks, and we are e-mailing you in hopes that you may have an task/idea to contribute; competition tasks regularly draw 100-200 teams of experts who dedicate their time to working on and achieving the best results on your task. This is an excellent opportunity to solicit expert feedback and brainpower towards solving your problems, identifying intern and FTE candidates, and building improved collaborations with your organization and academia. Typically, competition tasks are Kaggle-style, offering a clear specification of objective, a dataset (can be anonymized and de-identified appropriately), and a small reward for top-3 winning teams (typically ~$5K total, split across winners). Past tasks have come from amazing partners like Microsoft, Wikimedia, Adobe, ByteDance, Spotify, Baidu and more, on tasks as diverse as fake news classification, user retention prediction, music recommendation, vandalism detection, and knowledge-base completion, and winning teams have received excellent results across the board.
