Mark The Oxford Internet Institute seeks to hire a Cloudwork Postdoctoral Researcher for the Fairwork Project The University of Oxford’s Fairwork project, partnered with WZB (Berlin Social Science Center) <https://wzb.eu/en>, is recruiting a Cloudwork Postdoctoral Researcher. This is a full-time, fixed-term position, with remuneration at grade 8 (£42,149 – £50,296 per annum), starting as soon as possible until August 2023. The closing date for applications is midday, 5 February 2022. About Fairwork Fairwork is an action-research project that currently operates in 26 countries. We research working conditions in the platform economy, in order to develop ‘fairness ratings’ for digital labour platforms like Uber, Helpling and Deliveroo (see examples here <https://fair.work/en/fw/ratings/>). We use these ratings as a lever to improve pay and conditions for platform workers, through media and consumer pressure. The project currently operates in twenty six countries on five continents, and studies both geographically-tethered gig economy platforms and cloudwork <https://fair.work/en/ratings/cloudwork/> (or ‘remote work’) platforms. The Researcher position will involve co-leading the Fairwork Cloudwork project that scores platforms from around the world, and speaks to cloudworkers on every continent. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the post holder will act as a researcher and the Cloudwork Lead of the Fairwork project. Fairwork’s action research approach intends not just to understand the world, but to change it. By bringing workers, platforms, scholars, labour researchers and policymakers to the table, we work to collaboratively develop and embed principles of fair work into the script of the gig economy. Fundamental to the project is a commitment to being participatory and non-hierarchical within our communities: we are all—workers, unions, platforms, regulators, academics—the experts, and we all have co-developed this project. Our ultimate aim is to understand, and counter, some of the forces that disempower gig workers across the world. About the Cloudwork Postdoctoral Researcher Selection Criteria: Essential - Hold a relevant postgraduate degree in sociology, geography, anthropology, economics, development studies, social policy, or related fields. - Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field. - Academic or professional experience, and an established career, related to the gig economy, platform work, remote work, the digital economy, decent work, or precarious/temporary work. - Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research projects and methodologies. - Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities. - Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations. - Experience with survey design and analysis. - Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings. - Ability to organise complex sets of information, and develop granular work schedules. - Experience coordinating a diverse set of stakeholders. - Ability to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget - Ability to raise research funds through making grant applications. - Experience studying platform work in any of our countries of interest, and its relationships to inequality, race, gender, culture, and society. - An interest in understanding obstacles faced by platform workers. Responsibilities - Develop a survey instrument about the job quality in the gig economy, conduct research, analyse detailed and complex data from a variety of sources - Doing primary and secondary research, and drawing on existing data collected by the Fairwork team in order to evaluate platform companies against principles of Fairwork. - Having operational responsibility for multiple sub-areas of work within the bigger Fairwork project, and giving input to all key decision-making project-wide. - Regularly liaising with project stakeholders, and supervision of some of the project researchteam who are external to the OII. Agree clear task objectives, organise, and delegate work to other members of the team. - Disseminating the ‘fair work’ rating criteria in collaboration with the PI and project team. - Collaborate in the preparation of research publications, chapters, summaries, and reports. - Extensive travel to conduct research, both alone and with partners, to investigate and analyse wider issues shaping platform work in field sites. - Small scale project management and the co-ordination of multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. - Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone. - Prepare regular update reports to the funder and other collaborators. - Disseminate findings in the media. - Leading efforts to maintain a constant public profile (blogs, social media, short reports, etc.) - Managing the project’s stakeholder relationships. - Maintaining an awareness of key project deadlines and helping to steer the team towards them. - Leading in the organisation of workshops and an international conference about fair work. - Raise research funds through grant applications and manage delegated budgets. - Share responsibility for shaping the research group’s plans and the writing of group- funding applications for new research projects - Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups - Other duties as may be required by the PI. Dear AoIRists, This is a reminder that applications for the four Postdoctoral Research Associate jobs at the QUT Digital Media Research Centre in Brisbane, Australia will close on 30 January 2022 (more details at https://bit.ly/laureateteam) I would love to see a strong field of applicants from AoIR for these positions, because obviously AoIR people are the best people. These five-year, full-time jobs will be part of the team of my Australian Laureate Fellowship, a major research project that investigates the drivers and dynamics of partisanship and polarisation in online communication. The project will develop new approaches to assessing a number of key dimensions of polarisation: in the journalistic content produced by different news outlets; in the audiences accessing and engaging with such content; in public debates, on social media platforms and elsewhere, about specific current issues; and in the networks of interconnection and interaction on and across social media platforms. For this research, I'm looking for excellent Postdocs with expertise in one of more of the following research areas: journalism studies, media and communication studies, political science, social media analytics, computational social science, computational discourse analysis, social network analysis, issue mapping. The project takes an internationally comparative perspective, so I'm also explicitly interested in applicants from outside of Australia. (COVID-related travel restrictions should no longer be an issue by the time these jobs commence.) annotated bibliography of "internet studies" books?

Hi all — I'm teaching an undergraduate survey course in internet topics / networked cultures this spring at MIT. The students basically do a variety of selected readings on current/perennial topics and build toward posing a research question + writing a lengthy term paper. In the latter half of the course, I'm planning to require them to read a scholarly book in the domain of internet studies (very big tent/broadly defined) and give a presentation to the class. The goal is to get them to see how a scholar poses a research question and approaches it for a monograph. I'd love to be able to give them an annotated "internet studies" bibliography to help guide them toward selecting a book that might be of interest to them topically (and, ideally, would be a good cornerstone of whatever their final research project might be, either topically or methodologically). I was looking through Air-L archives, and I found some annotated bibliographies of academic articles in certain areas (e.g. ethnography), or email threads on specific topics where people recommend books on that topic. Is anyone aware of any reasonably comprehensive and up to date "internet studies" annotated bibliographies that exist out there in the world that I could link them to? I figured that if anyone would know, it would be AoIR — like, I would imagine "any AoIR member's book(s)" would be a large (but not exhaustive) base of this bibliography. Best, — Chris

How do these short videos affect people’s perceptions and knowledge of their own countries and other countries? How are short online video use similar or different between countries? We invite scholars from around the world to submit their research on shorts videos to our journal which will have a theme on this topic in our second issue in 2022. Online Media & Global Communication is a new free open access English language refereed journal published quarterly by De Gruyter and sponsored by Shanghai International Studies University. It aims to publish high quality, innovative and original research on global communication especially in the use of global online media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Whatspps, Weibo, WeChat, Wikipedia, web sites, blogs, etc., in an effort to make theoretical contributions on online media and global communication, particularly in but not limited to the Global South. This journal will address the contemporary concerns about the effects and operations of global digital media platforms on international relations, international public opinion, fake news and propaganda dissemination, consumer behavior as well as the balance of voices in the world. Topics of interest but not limited to these topics for the themed issue: 1. Social media influencers on TikTok and short videos: Political, social, cultural and commercial Effects across countries and cross-national comparison. 2. How do national governments and the public perceive the algorithm used by these short video sites from privacy to social and political impacts such as the cancel culture? The journal publishes six-language abstracts in United Nations official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish). This journal adopts a dual track review system as the first in the field of communication. Two review tracks are offered to the authors and authors must choose either one before final submission: 1. Double blind (masked) review track that both authors and reviewers do not know the identity of the author 2. Single blind (masked) review track that reviewers will know the identity of the author and the authors are free to cite their own works and refer to themselves in the manuscript Submitters who have posted their manuscript or its earlier version elsewhere online or with more than five self-citations will undergo the review process using the single-blind review track. Abstract Deadline: 15th January 2022 Conference Dates: 22nd to 24th of June 2022 Venues: It will be possible to participate in the conference online or in person. Conference activities will be hosted for one day in each of these locations: Department of Sociological Studies and Information School in Sheffield, UK School of Journalism and Communication in Ottawa, Canada Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) and Institute for Information Management (ifib) in Bremen, Germany. Call for abstracts: The Data Power Conference hosts critical reflections on data’s power and the social, political, economic and cultural consequences of data’s increasing presence in our lives, workplaces, and societies. The most recent conference in 2019 focused on the specific theme of global in/security. The 4th Data Power Conference, in June 2022, returns to some of the fundamental questions that underpinned the founding of the conference. It is conceived as a series of dialogues, dialogues about overarching concerns and with disciplines and stakeholders working with and on data. In particular, the conference will reflect on: How can stakeholders be engaged in critical conversations about data power? What constitute rigorous methods when it comes to researching data power? Third Call for Contributions: BIIRRR 2022 ************************************************************************* CHIIR 2022 Workshop on Building towards Information Interaction and Retrieval Resource Reuse March 14 2022, 9:00-17:00 This workshop is part of the ACM Conference on Human Information Interaction and Retrieval (CHIIR) 2022, taking place 14-18 March 2022 as a *fully virtual conference*. BIIRRR 2022 website: http://biirrr2022.aau.dk CHIIR 2022 website: https://ai.ur.de/chiir2022/home ************************************************************************* The aim of the BIIRRR workshop series is to provide a forum where researchers from the full spectrum of CHIIR interests can come together to develop ideas on improving resource reuse. At the previous BIIRRR workshops, we identified a number of focus areas essential to resource re-use in interactive information retrieval. We distilled these into a manifesto [https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3406522.3446056] published at CHIIR 2021, which highlighted the potential and challenges of research documentation and archiving for future reuse. Any part of a study (research design, research data, research infrastructure) is valuable for reuse at any level of granularity, from reproducing complete studies to single survey or interview questions. What is needed to enable reuse may vary for different methods, for instance, documentation for qualitative methods may require a different format than for quantitative methods, but both can be described in a structured and standardized way. In this context, it is particularly important that any guidelines or standards are flexible, adaptable, and can evolve as the research in the community evolves. The openness of the II&R community must not be restricted and extensive discussions are needed on how to balance standardisation, space for innovation and for aspects that can only be documented to a limited extent. BIIRRR 2022 is the third edition in the series and focuses on developing recommendations for documenting and archiving the wide range of II&R research resources, and to ensure that the documentation standards are relevant and applicable to both the specifics and breadth of the CHIIR community. Towards this end, the workshop has two main goals: - Collect practical experiences with documentation and reuse. We solicit experience and position papers to collect more examples of practical barriers, challenges, and approaches to documenting complex study setups. In an experience paper, authors can further document one of their previous II&R studies and analyze it in terms of the possibilities and challenges for the reuse of their research designs, data and infrastructure. Position papers discuss challenges and proposals in a more abstract manner. - Develop recommendations for research design documentation. Research designs are the first step in documenting research resources. The second goal of the 2022 edition of the BIIRRR workshop is to start discussing and developing recommendations for research design documentation. Our explicit aim is to develop an open proposal that can be used across the full range of study types in the II&R community and that is open to further development. ************************** Paper Contributions ************************** We invite two types of original contributions: experience papers and position papers. In experience papers, authors analyze one of their previous II&R studies in terms of research designs, research data, or research infrastructure in the context of reuse. Authors should not focus their contribution on the outcomes of their described studies, but on their thoughts and considerations in designing, setting up and adapting their studies as well as on efforts to connect their II&R study to previous work by others and aspects that make reuse of earlier work difficult. These experiences are rarely made explicit and the focus of discussion, but are necessary to further the discussion on reuse and sharing in IIR. Any details you think might be relevant for others to understand the choices made are good to have in your experience paper. Position papers describe and/or argue for challenges, benefits, best practices, perspectives on, and strategies for improving resource reuse in IIR. We also invite comments, feedback, and ideas on how to evolve the principles for II&R resources re-use or II&R resources reuse as suggested in the manifesto. The paper contributions will be presented in themed sessions in the morning. The afternoon will then discuss the main ideas and challenges from the morning session in break-out groups. The workshop will conclude with a collaborative writing session aimed at developing an open proposal for documenting research designs that can be used across the full range of study types in the II&R community and that is open to further development All submissions should be in English and should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. However, in the case of experience papers, they may be based on already published experimental II&R studies and expand upon research design descriptions, methodological decision-making, and successes and failures. The obfuscation of women’s participation in cultural, creative, and technical fields, including in assembly and other forms of work typically overlooked in the literature (Nakamura 2011, 2014, Mayer, 2011) cannot be disentangled from the historical association of femininity with consumption and the private, domestic sphere (Kearney, 1998), and the devaluation of women’s production activities (White, 2015). Feminist scholarship of media production activities, both within professional industrial contexts and in spaces beyond this such as new digital economies (Duffy, 2015), have highlighted the role of women in media work as well as the social, technical, economic, and political structures that contribute to the ongoing devaluation of women’s work. This special issue seeks to extend this conversation and open up new horizons for research on feminist media production. At a time where the few high profile women in media making are held up as examples of change when the #MeToo movement and its ripple effects have highlighted ongoing pervasive issues, the moment is ripe for critical, intersectional, and transnational discussions of feminism and media-making. This is all the more pressing given the global fight against workplace-based sexism has waned in light of the exigencies of the Covid-19 pandemic. Paradoxically, within this context and an ever-expanding digital cultural economy, gendered inequality and employment precarity have become even more acute. At a virtual conference hosted by Women in Television and Film Canada in 2021, speakers noted the disproportionate impact of crises like COVID-19 on women and people of color in the media. Evidence shows that women are struggling with not only a shortage of employment opportunities but also challenges related to care responsibilities, mental health, and/or domestic violence (Boserup, McKenney, & Elkbuli, 2020, Bradbury-Jones & Isham, 2020, Power, 2020, Seedat & Rondon, 2021). In tandem with this, scholars have noted how the proliferation of digital platforms offer content creators, including women, new avenues and tools to disseminate their works and connect with new audiences (Lauzen, 2021). This special issue seeks to explore women’s production cultures and practices, the subject-positions they entail, and the labour relations and policies they are entangled with. We seek submissions from scholars in diverse fields to advance interdisciplinary dialogues on feminist media production. We are interested in empirical, theoretical, and historical contributions that address long-standing and emerging questions regarding the relationship between media production, gender, race, labor, embodiment, nationalism, surveillance capitalism, platform politics, neoliberalism, and reactionary politics. Submissions that deploy intersectional feminist, decolonial, and anti-colonial approaches are especially welcome. We are also very interested in papers that explore approaches and methods for examining feminist media production in emerging and digital media. We encourage those considering submission to take a broad view of media production and a local perspective on these practices, as we are interested in case studies from different parts of the world.
