Workshop on Combating Misinformation: Theoretical and Design Challenges to Support a Healthy Information Ecosystem Where: Virtual (Zoom) When: August 18/19, 2022 Submissions: https://easychair.org/cfp/WOM-2022 Submission due: July 31, 2022 Notification: August 7, 2022 Description Although misinformation has been used as a tool for propaganda throughout history, it has recently garnered immense public attention following the Brexit referendum and the US elections in 2016. Online social media outlets lack regular news media's editorial standards and procedures for ensuring the veracity of information, and as a result, social media platforms have become arteries for the dissemination of misinformation. We define misinformation as false or misleading information presented as fact regardless of intent. While only a tiny percentage of people share false or misleading information, the proliferation of false and misleading information on social media has eroded trust in our democracies and given rise to more advanced forms of social deception. In recent years, information systems (IS) researchers have investigated this phenomenon and suggested ways of mitigating its spread. Some proposed solutions by scholars and industry professionals include, news presentation and their formats, source ratings and credibility, and correcting and debunking the misinformation. This inaugural two-day online workshop hosted by the Center for Computational and Data Science<https://ischool.syr.edu/center-for-computational-and-data-science/> (CCDS), seeks to bring together scholars to rethink contemporary paradigms and mobilize discussion on pioneering technological solutions to combat misinformation. We hope that this discussion will provide opportunities for collaboration and help to develop a research agenda that illuminates areas for future research that eventually leads to solutions. At the end of this workshop, we will synthesize and present the ideas in a white paper which would be available on the CCDS website. Submission Guidelines To participate please submit your abstracts by July 31, 2022, using the submission page, addressing interesting questions around this phenomenon. Abstracts should not exceed one page, five hundred (500) words, double-spaced, 12-font. Eight papers will be selected for presentation, and all will be invited to participate in the workshop. We seek a wide range of research in content, theory, perspectives, and methods as they relate to combating misinformation. We encourage inter-disciplinary research with partners from information systems, journalism, communication, library and information science, psychology, sociology, political science, computer science and other disciplines. Topics include the effectiveness of user interventions like education, crowdsourcing, nudges, platform governance, regulatory/policy solutions, design of algorithms, social bots, curation systems, recommendation systems to counter misinformation. We welcome research at any level of analysis and using a variety of methods such as, qualitative, quantitative, archival, observational, mixed methods research, design science and comprehensive theory development research. Announcing the #AoIR2022 Keynote Speaker

It is with great pleasure that we announce the keynote speaker for AoIR 2022: Decolonizing the Internet <https://aoir.org/aoir2022/> will be Nanjala Nyabola. Nanjala is a writer and researcher based in Nairobi, Kenya. Her work focuses on the intersection between technology, media, and society. She has held numerous research associate positions including with the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), and other institutions, while also working as a research lead for several projects on human rights broadly and digital rights specifically around the world. She is a fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), the Digital Forensic Lab at the Atlantic Council, The Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology (CIPIT) at Strathmore University, and the Centre for International Cooperation (CIC) at NYU. She has published in several academic journals including the African Security Review and The Women's Studies Quarterly, and contributed to numerous edited collections. Nanjala also writes commentary for publications like The Nation, Al Jazeera, The Boston Review and others. While they no longer believe that God gave the Torah to Jews at Mount Sinai, these hidden heretics continue to live in their families and religious communities, even as they surreptitiously break Jewish commandments and explore forbidden secular worlds in person and online. Drawing on five years of fieldwork with those living double lives and the rabbis, life coaches, and religious therapists who minister to, advise, and sometimes excommunicate them, Ayala Fader investigates religious doubt and social change in the digital age. The internet, which some ultra-Orthodox rabbis call more threatening than the Holocaust, offers new possibilities for the age-old problem of religious uncertainty. Fader shows how digital media has become a lightning rod for contemporary struggles over authority and truth. She reveals the stresses and strains that hidden heretics experience, including the difficulties their choices pose for their wives, husbands, children, and, sometimes, lovers. In following those living double lives, who range from the religiously observant but open-minded on one end to atheists on the other, Fader delves into universal quandaries of faith and skepticism, the ways digital media can change us, and family frictions that arise when a person radically transforms who they are and what they believe.
