Digital Queer Cultures, Intimacies, and Movements in the Asia-Pacific Chairs/Organizers: Woori Han, Exeter University and Michelle Ho, National University of Singapore Digital media in the Asia Pacific region are a contested site for local expressions of global cultural and political flows, troubling and rewriting the narratives of modernity and development, the nation-state, and gendered and sexual norms. Especially in recent years, we have witnessed, for example, the cases of digital counterpublics, proliferation of LGBTQ media representations, digital intimacies, and the advent of trans-exclusionary feminisms. This panel bridges queer digital studies with queer Asian studies and queer Pacific studies, to explore how media and technology intersect with and change the ways in which gendered and sexed bodies, practices, and desires in the Asia-Pacific have been constructed. Syracuse University's School of Information Studies (iSchool) invites interested undergraduates to apply to our nine-week residential research experience in 2024, funded by the National Science Foundation. Undergraduates from all social science disciplines are welcome to apply to this summer 2024 experience at the Syracuse campus in beautiful upstate New York. Successful applicants will receive $6,000 in stipend funding plus free meals and housing. Syracuse University's iSchool has excelled for more than 25 years at providing education for students interested in technology and its impacts on industry, education, health, the environment, and other sectors. The research experience includes learning about text analysis, conducting a social science research project using data provided by professors, and opportunities for professional development and mentoring. Scholars have described how they produce new forms of colonialism and capitalism through data extractivism and surveillance (Cohen 2019, Zuboff 2019, Couldry and Mejias 2020); impose barriers to social rights (UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health 2023), and amplify racial discrimination (Eubanks 2018, Benjamin 2019). At the same time, digitization is sparking transformative social movements. It is creating new agential capacities for women (Maslen and Lupton 2018) and new forms of solidarity, for instance around women’s rights, sexual orientation and gender identity, and health (Waldman et al 2018; Davis et al 2023) as well as new spaces for mobilization and advocacy (Niezen 2020). This panel invites papers that explore how activists in diverse contexts are mobilizing human rights in relation to data and the digital transformation. While some have critiqued the continuing viability of human rights as a frame for social justice (Billaud 2017, Moyn 2018, Whyte 2019), anthropologists see a new vitality in the diverse ways that human rights are “appropriated, adapted and redefined” to fit a variety of contexts (Merry 2018, Canfield 2022, Goodale 2022). Drawing on diverse field sites and conceptual lenses, including ethnographic (and digital ethnographic) research in and from the Majority and Minority worlds, we seek to understand how activists respond to challenges of digital access, datafication, discrimination, and platform capitalism given increasingly diffuse notions of accountability, privacy, and equality by translating human rights. We ask: How are activists redefining and applying human rights in a rapidly shifting realm where the role of the state, as primary duty-bearer, is frequently nebulous, and where the private sector dominates? What can anthropology and ethnographic methods offer to understanding human rights in the digital age? This volume will present a comprehensive review of the current state of critical data studies, a field that looks at data as a site of contested meanings and politics. Special Issue: Message from the Editors Bullying, both offline and online, continues to pose significant challenges to the wellbeing and development of students in educational settings. As these behaviours remain a problem in the school environment, it becomes increasingly important to explore the vital role that teachers play in addressing and mitigating the problem (Brochado et al., 2017). Traditional bullying, involving physical, verbal, and relational harassment, and cyberbullying, which takes place through digital communication channels, both have far-reaching consequences for students' mental and emotional health, academic performance, classroom concentration, and overall school climate (Betts et al., 2017; Boulton & Macaulay, 2023; Mark & Ratliffe, 2011; Wolke et al., 2017). Teachers are uniquely positioned to make a meaningful impact in combatting these behaviours, both in and out of the school environment (Myers & Cowie, 2019; Veenstra et al., 2014; Yoon & Bauman, 2014). Despite this, research suggests that teachers feel unprepared to address bullying in the school environment, with inconsistent management strategies and views (Campbell et al., 2019; Macaulay et al., 2018; 2021). These different perceptions create challenges for the reporting and addressing of these incidents, understanding the most pressing correlates and consequences, and ascertaining how best to proceed with anti‐bullying interventions that directly or indirectly involve educators. The nature of bullying has become more dynamic, nuanced, and difficult to identify/monitor, and so schools should take a whole‐school approach to prevent different acts of bullying (Valle et al., 2020). Such an approach requires the endorsement across all parts of the school team – for example, teachers, senior members of staff, and leaders – working together with the wider community to create an overarching supportive school climate. This special issue will aim to present recent research evidence on the role of teachers in preventing and intervening in traditional bullying and cyberbullying. The aim of this special issue is to bring together and spotlight research that: - Examines the contextual and situational factors that constrain or support teachers in their efforts to prevent and intervene in traditional bullying and cyberbullying incidents. - Details the optimal strategies teachers endorse to manage bullying and cyberbullying situations across different educational settings and populations of students. - Examines the role and views of pre‐service and in‐service teachers on the prevention and intervention of traditional bullying and cyberbullying. - Illuminates how teachers can best work in concert with other major stakeholders to attenuate these issues.
