We are really pleased to announce the publication of the openly access special issue *Internet Research Ethics in the Platform Society: Theoretical Reflections, Research Experiences, and Open Questions* of the journal *Comunicazioni Sociali. ACM UMAP 2024 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The workshops will provide a venue to discuss and explore key emerging areas of user modeling, recommender systems and adaptive hypermedia research, among others, with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. The forms of inquiry and modes of learning it tries to foster include a focus on the unconscious dynamics at work in these various domains. Psychosocial studies is informed by a body of theoretical work that draws on psychoanalysis, critical social theory, anglophone and continental philosophy and the arts and humanities. It has stimulated considerable innovation in research and practice methodologies and in learning and teaching. Experiential inquiry has often been at the heart of these developments, including biographical, narrative, visual and other sensory methods, and reflexive auto-ethnography. All this speaks to the first part of the title. However, as new psychic and social borderlines blur fantasy and reality, confusion, insecurity and precarity are generated between actual and virtual worlds, and between materialities and imaginaries. The temptation to reach for simple and incontestable certainties leads to a range of beliefs and behaviours that narrow the potential for learning from others and our encounters with them. This is fertile ground for the polarisations of populism, the idealisations of celebrity culture, the excitements of disinformation and conspiracy and the comforts of the media echo chamber. At the same time the structures that contain and mediate are in disarray. Politics is said to be ‘broken’, welfare states are ‘unaffordable’, education systems ‘fail’ to prepare the young to live in a fragmented world that appears to be rapidly degrading its own habitat. The gathering crises of climate breakdown and human displacement appear irresolvable amidst the social and political fragmentation that afflicts and divides whole populations and manifests in everyday relationships and social institutions as traumatic repetition, denial and disavowal. In that sense there is a real danger of repeating mistakes from the past and not learning from painful historical experiences, or of helplessness and hopelessness in the face of technological and socio-political change. We welcome submissions from clinicians and practitioners as well as academics from different fields, arts, humanities and social/sciences, who may be working at the psychosocial edge and/or working with psychoanalytic and philosophical theories able to shed light on learning from experience. We welcome submissions for experiential events and artistic productions. In the face of problems of this severity what does learning from experience look like? What does it involve and what are the obstacles? What processes and methods will serve such learning? This conference will include paper presentations, workshops and an experiential strand which will be threaded throughout. This panel invites empirical and theoretical contributions that (re-)address concepts of place, culture and the digital. Long abstract Since the late 1980s, anthropologists have questioned the concepts of “culture” and “the ethnographic field” as bounded entities and gradually have shifted their focus from entities to relations. Research into the digitalization of everyday life brings us back to the query of how to define the “ethnographic place” (Pink et al. 2016), and how to conceptualise place and placemaking and its relation to culture more broadly. Due to the ubiquitous proliferation of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, machine learning and new communication media, anthropologists encounter place and placemaking increasingly as a relational practice in virtual and physical proximity (Kaufmann and Palmberger 2022). Concepts such as “virtual culture”, “online culture” or “cyberculture” are too narrow. While people build social relations, negotiate identities and claim space beyond territorially defined places, physical place remains important for the experience of being in the world, including the experience of inequalities (Udupa and Dattatreyan 2023). Concepts such as “ethnographic co-presence” (Chua 2015), “field events” (Ahlin and Li 2019), and smartphones as “domestic spaces” (Miller et al. 2021) have been proposed to address the complex entanglements of place in ethnographies of the digital, however there is little engagement with the notion of culture in the digital environment and digitalized society. Yet, culture can be conceptualized and theorized in different ways, especially when attending to its relationship to place. This panel seeks to re-evaluate place, culture and their interconnections and invites contributions that (re-)address conceptual questions of place, culture and the digital, empirically and theoretically. The current excitement about the perils and prospects of general purpose AI applications like ChatGPT is only the most recent wave of public interest in the long history of “artificial intelligence” (AI). With its metaphysical imaginaries of human-machine symbiosis, anthropomorphic robots and machine thinking, arguably oversized scientific claims and technological developments in this field have always raised concerns. What the current debate makes much more visible than previous attention cycles, though, is that contemporary AI companies and scientists dominate not only the discourse promoting AI’s prospects but also that on AI’s perils. From engineers at OpenAI to research pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, technologists and industry-based scientists increasingly articulate warnings that AI might cause serious and fundamental damage to societies. With this move, the already dominant players are now also occupying the space of public critique, yielding the risk that activism, social science, critical journalism and the arts are pushed even further to the margins of public and expert debates. Are we currently having the public controversies on AI that we should have, or is AI panic derailing us from actual and relevant concerns? How do we get to the controversies that we need and to the exploration and articulation of society-centered AI? CFA: Open Panel “Degrowing Data" EASST/4S Conference, Amsterdam

Dear Colleagues, We are inviting submissions to our open panel “Degrowing Data: Valuing and Practicing Intentional Data Loss” at the 4S/EASST Conference, which will take place in Amsterdam, 16-19 July 2024. We are interested in both ‘traditional’ paper abstracts and diverse creative contributions, especially for the second half of the panel which focuses on degrowth as both an academic discourse and a social movement. Submission Deadline: February 12, 2024. Short Abstract: This panel explores intentional data loss. Contributions engage with data loss practices, narratives, and values and how they can expose power structures but also provide space for resistance. A concluding interactive dialogue session links intentional data loss to degrowth for liveable futures. Long Abstract: This combined format open panel seeks to decentre our need to accumulate data and the fear of its loss. For good reasons, much effort has been put into protecting, saving or securing diverse data, for example at cultural heritage sites, for personal digital archives or as part of seed banks. But what about the inverse? What about data practices, narratives and values focusing on, or even desiring data loss through deletion, deconstruction, decluttering, discarding or disconnecting (cf Hobbis and Hobbis 2021; Thylstrup 2022)? The first session welcomes traditional papers (research papers, essays, reviews) but also more creative, playful, submissions (scripts, dialogues, audio/visual work). Contributions may ask questions like: When, why, and how is data loss practised and valued? Who benefits when data loss is (forcefully) prevented and why? Can there be a right to delete besides a legalized ‘right to be forgotten’ (cf Gupta and Naithani 2023)? How and when can intentional data loss be an expression of power and/or resistance against it (cf Liboiron and Lepawsky 2022)? The second session consists of an interactive dialogue connecting the papers to degrowth debates, that are yet to find a clear position in STS scholarship. Reflecting the twofold goal of the degrowth debate, this session is concerned with an advancement of social theory and a social movement. Leaning on insights from degrowth debates, we first think through the capitalist dynamics (accumulation, extraction, abundance) surrounding fears of data loss. Secondly, we seek to uncover possibilities for connecting intentional data loss practices with degrowth initiatives. Could intentional data loss practices and values contribute to more liveable futures? We are especially interested in case studies/contributions from diverse global contexts, epistemologies and ontologies and intend to combine our insights from the panel into a special issue/book, joint dialogic article, and/or more creative output.
