Dear colleagues, I wanted to share with you a book that I have just published in Cuba together with two co-authors about Generative AI, with the support of the institute where I work, the Juan Marinello Cuban Cultural Research Institute. In the book, I rely on the concept of social appropriation of technology to promote an ethical, reliable, robust, and sovereign use of the IA. Although it is in Spanish (and I apologize for that), it may be of interest to those with curiosity about how generative AI is being approached from the island, and a little more from the Global South. I also believe that Spanish-speaking researchers who are members of this list may find it interesting. The book is available for free download. Edwin Baker Award for the Advancement of Scholarship on Media, Markets and Democracy Sponsored by the Communication Law and Policy and Philosophy, Theory and Critique Divisions The Baker Award recognizes work that has made significant contributions to the development, reach and influence of such scholarship. While the award committee favors research that consists of multiple projects and publications that have made a clear, coherent and sustained contribution to the advancement of such scholarship over time, single works and/or activities that have been highly influential in the field may also qualify someone for nomination. More specifically, nominees for this award will have accomplished one or more of the following: • opened up new theoretical and/or methodological territory in research on any aspect of the interrelations between media, markets and democracy; • made other important contributions to the advancement of scholarship on these inter-relations; • engaged in activism that advanced scholarship on these inter-relations. The award is open to ICA members and to anyone else whose research can be shown to have a connection with the work of the ICA and its various divisions. Members of the Award Committee may nominate, but no ICA member who makes a nomination or who is nominated for an award can serve on the committee judging the nomination. We encourage self-nominations, as well as the nomination of others. The award committee encourages nominations that reflect the diversity of media and communications scholarship in terms of gender, ethnicity, race and sexuality. The Forum intends to serve as an interactive platform, encourage potential authors to present emerging topics and controversial positions, and demonstrate innovative systems, tools, and applications. The Forum sessions at the CAiSE conference will facilitate the interaction, discussion, and exchange of ideas among presenters and participants. Contributions to the CAiSE'24 Forum are welcome to address any of the CAiSE'24 conference topics and, particularly, this year's theme—Information Systems in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. We invite two types of submissions: • Visionary papers present innovative research projects, which are still at a relatively early stage and do not necessarily include a full-scale validation. Our proposed panel for AoIR 2024 focuses on the digital histories of right-wing/reactionary communities and how they established pre-digital networks or transitioned from print/broadcast media to digital media. This could include (but is not limited to) scholarship on: - the men's rights movement, manosphere, and incel communities; - white nationalist and white supremacist communities; - conspiracy theories and disinformation; and - backlash and reactionary movements. New article on Personal Data Tracking in the Mobile Ecosystem

Dear all, I am pleased to share a new open-access article ‘Super SDKs: Tracking personal data and platform monopolies in the mobile<https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/20539517241231270>’, co-authored with Mark Coté at King’s College London, published in Big Data & Society. It will be of interest particularly to those of you who are already doing great critical scholarship on mobile apps, datafication, surveillance and platform capitalism, and crucial infrastructure studies. Our article introduces an innovative socio-technical methodology for the more finely granulated tracking (auditing) of personal data capture and use by apps and third parties in the mobile ecosystem. We introduce a heretofore overlooked technical object—SDKs (Software Development Kits)—and offer a taxonomy to better understand data monetisation and predictive analytics. A major finding is the special category of the Super SDK, reserved for giants like Google and Facebook, which are the primary means for the expansion of platform monopolisation across the mobile ecosystem. Finally, we deploy the concept of ‘data monadology’ to theorise the value of our micro-perspective on data, as a grounded critical supplement to the macro-perspective on platforms and infrastructures. I should add this work emerges from a number of UKRI-funded research projects done here at King’s, including workshops done with our students, and is a testament to the research-led teaching our department cultivates.
