It is a focused and in-depth look at one programming language and its community - Ruby - based on ethnographic research at a London company and conversations with members of the wider Ruby community in Europe, the Americas and Japan. This book shows that the place people write code, the language they write it in and the stories shared by that community are crucial in questioning and unpacking what it means to be a 'coder'. CfP: Workshop on Creation with GenAI (Brisbane, Australia and Exeter, UK)

We invite researchers and practitioners working with Generative AI (GenAI) to submit proposals for 20-minute presentations, demonstrations and artefacts for our upcoming workshop, jointly hosted by the University of Queensland (UQ) and the University of Exeter. The workshop aims to explore methods for scaffolding the process of using GenAI (i.e.OpenAI ChatGPT and DALLE 3, Microsoft CoPilot, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney), enabling individuals to create artifacts in both familiar and unfamiliar domains. The workshop seeks to foster collaboration among Human-Centred Computing researchers, GenAI algorithm researchers, and current GenAI practitioners. The workshop is funded by the QUEX Institute Workshop Grant Scheme. We encourage submissions that showcase cross-domain use of GenAI such as: 1. Image generation tools like Stable Diffusion, DALL-E or Midjourney to create artwork, illustrations, or designs. 2. Code generation tools like GitHub Copilot or CHatGPT to create software (including websites and games), scripts, or algorithms. 3. Language models like GPT-3 or ChatGPT to generate written content, such as articles, stories, or poetry. 4. Audio generation tools like Jukebox, Magenta or Suno to create music, soundscapes, or audio effects. 5. Video generation tools like RunwayML to create animations, video content, or visual effects. 6. Modeling tools to create 3D models, sculptures, or architectural designs. We are open to submissions that demonstrate the use of GenAI in other creative domains not listed above, as well as innovative applications of GenAI that bridge multiple domains or disciplines. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, 29 May, starting at 1 pm AEST at the UQ St Lucia campus. It will feature a joint location hybrid panel before transitioning to the Exeter venue. Both locations will host keynote speakers and the event will also be livestreamed. The agenda is structured such that half the events and schedule will come from UQ in the afternoon, transitioning smoothly to Exeter in their morning, thereby fostering a cohesive cross-continental collaboration. A distinctive element of the workshop is a dedicated crossover time, to facilitate a hybrid collaborative discussion among the participants from both universities. Seeking Distributed Research Teams to Participate in Paid Study

Dear Air-L community, Are you working in a research team that regularly meets online? We at the VICE lab (Virtual Identity, Community, and Entitativity) at UNC Charlotte are conducting a study on how distributed research teams develop and maintain their connections during and between their virtual meetings. We are currently seeking a wide variety of research teams in STEM, social sciences, and humanities to participate in this research. Research teams can have a variety of purposes including but not limited to basic research, applied research & development, grant writing, policy creation, data collection & analysis, and manuscript preparation. We prefer teams ranging from 3 and 10 people who have regular virtual meetings. Participation will include completing a series of surveys and sharing recordings of four consecutive meetings. One member of the research team will serve as our lead contact to help with coordination. If chosen to participate in the study, the team contact will receive compensation of up to $250 and each team member will receive up to $150. The conference is being held at the University of Birmingham on 21st June and it is hosted by the Institute for STEMM in Culture and Society (ISTEMMiCS): "Mobilities are undergoing profound transformations in the digital era, reshaping the movement of people, goods, and information across space and time. From AI-driven urban technologies to the impact of crises like COVID-19, the digital realm increasingly influences how we experience mobility. The 2024 DGRG symposium, hosted by the University of Birmingham’s Institute for STEMM in Culture and Society on Friday, June 21st, 2024, offers a platform to explore these dynamics. Call for Participation: Internet Research with Foundation Models?

Dear Airlisters, CAT4SMR <https://cat4smr.humanities.uva.nl/> is convening its closing workshop on the exploration of generative methods in internet research on September 3, 2024 in Amsterdam. Situated within the Digital Methods Initiative <http://digitalmethods.net/>, CAT4SMR has been working on tools for capturing and analyzing social media data, such as 4CAT <http://4cat.nl/> and the YouTube Data Tools <https://ytdt.digitalmethods.net/>, but also on how to develop and implement new and innovative research methods. As the incorporation of large pre-trained models (sometimes referred to as “foundation models”, including Large Language Models, Large Vision Models, etc.) into social sciences and humanities (SSH) research moves from novelty to standard, the need to exchange, evaluate, and critique is becoming pressing. This one-day workshop will serve as a forum for investigating how these advanced computational techniques are being integrated into digital research, what opportunities, limitations, and pitfalls they imply, and what this means for academic research. Our conversations will center around several themes: The evolution of digital methods in light of foundation models, exploring how tools like LLMs and LVMs augment and transform established methodologies and introduce new ones into digital research, from thematic textual and visual analysis to the study of misinformation; The critical examination of best practices in the deployment of LLMs or LVMs, from the art of effective prompting to the nuances of model selection, fine-tuning, and evaluation, all within the context of internet research; We are particularly interested in fostering discussions about new epistemologies, ethical implications, and practical issues related to the use of these models in research. This includes the careful examination of models’ black-boxed nature and their (potential) imprint on research, as well as the broader ethical landscape that researchers navigate. We welcome short proposals (about 500 words) for brief presentations on empirical research projects, methodologies, tools, or critiques aligned with our workshop themes, especially those adopting experimental, explorative, or speculative approaches. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: interesting new methods, advancing visual and textual analysis; effective strategies for employing pre-trained models in internet research; taming black boxes: observing, testing, and deploying pre-trained models for digital research; the evolution of interpretive practices with the integration of LLMs; the role of pre-trained models as surrogate expert readers; the delegation of interpretative agency to pre-trained models; reflections on the role of pre-trained models in, or next to, qualitative and quantitative research; challenges and opportunities in the ‘traceability’ of digital actors and research procedures; researching platformed models; platform research with pre-trained models and their (mis)uses for medium-sensitive studies; This will be a one-day meeting with presentations and ample room for discussion. We hope to make this an inspiring event by bringing together scholars and practitioners from diverse disciplines, resulting in fruitful collaborations. At the time, the software allowed computer users to access music files online for the first time in an efficient manner. Following its release, record executives swore it would end recorded music; in fact, record labels continue to see profits every year. However, the impact of Napster was much larger than just downloading music. The technology changed the Internet to facilitate the exchange of files on a large scale. Corporations across media and cultural industries reacted to stifle the burgeoning peer-2-peer software's development. A cadre of lawyers and lobbyists worked to stop filesharing and change the laws governing the Internet. These changes altered the cultural development of software and trapped us in an era of unending consumption. We're interested in short (1,000-5,000 word) descriptive, analytical, and/or polemical pieces or longer critical article manuscripts of any length.
