June 29 and 30 - Pre-conference "Digital platform approaches from Latin America and other margins: social mediation, market structures, labor relations and sovereign alternatives" The event is part of the IAMCR Annual Conferences, which will be held at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. The pre-conference will take place on June 29 and 30 at the same university. The impacts of the development of digital platforms will be discussed, considering all these changes and the centrality of the new global cultural system in economic, political and cultural terms. To this end, three themes that constitute the basic methodological model of analysis of the Brazilian Political Economy of Communications (PEC) will be discussed: (1) at the central level, the problem of labor, which is related to the forms of production of value, labor in the production of platforms and labor mediated by platforms; (2) at the microeconomic level, the relationships between market structures and the strategies of the relevant players in different countries; (3) at the macro-social level, the problem of sovereign responses, considering regulation, governance, the development of public policies and community alternatives. NEW SCHOLARLY COLLECTIVE: The Content Creator Scholars Network (CCSN)

We’re pleased to announce the inauguration of the Content Creator Scholars Network (CCSN)! https://ccsn.framer.website/ The CCSN is an independent network of researchers dedicated to sharing knowledge and resources on the creator economy with the wider academic, technology, media, and regulatory communities. Our founding members' work spans six core themes: industries and economies; creative labor and resistance; platform infrastructure, governance and moderation; identity, inequality and marginalization; social media cultures and communities; and algorithms and AI. We can’t wait to develop more with you! What does the CCSN do? Representing a diverse range of disciplines and approaches, including media and communications, sociology, digital humanities, politics, anthropology and critical cultural studies, our network sets out to cultivate an international community of members and affiliates to promote additional perspectives and generate new research in the field of creator culture. CCSN members also produce educational resources, participate in journalistic interviews, connect with platforms and digital regulators, and organise events and spaces for creator studies research. At our core is the interest to engage with creators and the creator economy beyond observation, to create and contribute to dialogue with industry and workers in order to address concerns of power and in/equalities. Why do we need a CCSN? Social media platforms provide crucial opportunities for people to express themselves, find and build communities, promote small businesses, and earn a livelihood. But while these spaces are becoming key drivers of commerce and culture, they are also characterised by precarity, inequalities and power imbalances when it comes to governance, earnings and representation. As trained researchers, we are well poised to understand and redress the latter challenges, offering not only solutions but better questions about the trajectories of cultural work. The CCSN arose from academic conferences, events, roundtables and networking events where its founding members found similarities in the spaces, behaviours and issues they examined across different disciplines. By bringing an interdisciplinary perspective to the study of content creation, we hope to generate the necessary conversations and changes for creator work to be taken seriously, and to promote and inform policy and industry change. Through our research, we hope to advocate for improved working conditions, fair compensation, and greater forms of transparency and communication, to help them be taken seriously and compensated fairly. More broadly, we aim to advance conversations about information and entertainment in the digital age through focusing on the labor, struggles, and celebrations of those in the digital trenches, making content day in and day out. The use of AI in online social networks offers great opportunities and, at the same time, raises several challenges. AI's ability to analyze vast amounts of data in real-time allows social media platforms to offer highly personalized experiences to users. The use of AI may raise concerns about ethical issues such as privacy, algorithmic bias, misinformation, etc., but AI can also be used for content moderation on social media to detect and remove harmful or inappropriate content, identifying and mitigating the spread of fake news. etc. The use of AI on OSNEM can promote the democratic processes by facilitating the dissemination of information and encourage political engagement. On the other hand, AI algorithms can create echo chambers, influence voting behavior and generate significant risks for democracy. AI-driven security measures can help to protect OSNEM users from fraud and privacy breaches but, malicious actors can also use AI to support their attacks. The exponential diffusion of generative AI adds novel dimensions to this landscape, on the one hand supporting novel forms of interactions spanning into the Metaverse, but on the other hand exposing vulnerable users to dramatic threats. The aim of this special issue is to push the state of the art in using AI in OSNEM, by presenting quantitative contributions that investigate the opportunities and challenges of using AI in Online Social Networks. Within this framework, topics include, but are not limited to: - Using AI in OSNEM for personalization, efficiency, and recommendations; - AI-based studies for analysis and modelling of information and opinion dynamics in OSNEM; - AI-based predictions based on OSNEM data analysis; - AI impact on OSNEM security, trustworthiness and privacy; - Generative AI in OSNEM; - AI and social networking in the Metaverse; - AI methodologies for large-scale OSNEM data collection and analysis - AI methods to safeguard OSNEM users (e.g., bot detection, toxic content identification, content moderation, echo chamber avoidance) - Case studies of AI application in OSNEM Online Social Networks and Media is a multidisciplinary journal for the wide community of computer and network scientists working on developing OSNEM platforms and services and using OSNEM as a big data source to mine, learn and model the (online) human behaviour. Manuscripts only based on questionnaires, even focused on the reported use of social media, are outside the scope of the journal. It specifically encourages novel algorithms related to cloud and edge computing, cloud architectures, and the cloud-edge continuum. Experimental work evaluating contemporary cloud-edge approaches and relevant applications is of particular interest. Additionally, ALGOCLOUD welcomes demonstration manuscripts showcasing successful system developments, as well as articles discussing experiences, use cases, and high-quality survey papers. Contributions may encompass a broad spectrum of algorithms, practices, and techniques for modelling, building, and evaluating operations and services across various systems, including virtualized infrastructures, cloud computing platforms, edge computing platforms, fog computing platforms, data centers, cloud storage options, cloud data management, non-traditional key-value stores on the cloud, HPC architectures, decentralized systems, and dynamic networks. All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome: Regular papers: Authors are invited to submit high-quality manuscripts reporting original unpublished research in the topics related to the symposium. A regular paper submission should clearly motivate the importance of the problem being addressed, discuss prior work and its relationship to the paper, explicitly and precisely state the paper’s key contributions, and outline the key technical ideas and methods used to achieve the main results. A regular paper submission should not exceed 12 pages, including title page and abstract but excluding references and an optional appendix. Authors should include all necessary details in their submission so that the Technical Program Committee (TPC) can judge correctness, importance and originality of their work. Any material (e.g., proofs or experimental results) omitted (from the main part of 12 pages)due to space limitations can be put into the optional appendix, which will be read at the TPC’s discretion. Regular papers will be allotted up to 20 pages in the proceedings. Short papers: A short paper submission may present work-in-progress on a specific topic, or work appeared elsewhere but is worth publicizing it in the symposium, or a demonstration of a system or library, or an experience/use-case paper, or a vision paper. Authors should clearly motivate the importance of their contribution, discuss prior work and its relationship to the paper, and in general provide sufficient details in their submission so that the TPC can judge the quality and importance of their work. A short paper submission should be at least 2 and at most 8 pages. Short papers will be allotted up to 8 pages in the proceedings. Survey papers: A survey paper submission concerns the write-up of a high-quality survey paper on an emerging hot topic. Authors are asked to submit a proposal between 5 and 10 pages, that clearly motivates the importance of the topic, and contains the structure of the survey paper along with the most important references that will be critically reviewed and presented. If the proposal is accepted, then authors will be given sufficient time to prepare the full version of their survey paper that needs to pass a quality control check by the TPC, in order to be finally accepted and appear in the proceedings. Recent awards<https://www.neh.gov/blog/announcing-new-odh-awards-april-2024> include projects exploring environmental and cultural impacts of large technology centers on American communities, the history of transportation infrastructure, the history of medical life support technologies, and studies of political activity and online harassment on social media platforms. NEH's DOT program calls for new research that explores the relationship between technology and culture as well as technology's dramatic impacts on society. "Technology" may be interpreted broadly, and the program encourages research into technologies not only of the modern or digital era but from any time period. https://recruiting.ultipro.com/NAT1051NDEM/JobBoard/79dbb2b6-6a4f-4628-a401… Beginning in late 2022 and throughout 2023 and 2024, the tech industry imposed significant budget cuts and workforce reductions, in some cases in response to economic uncertainty, and in others as a result of fundamental mission and value shifts by executive leadership. Teams working on trust and safety, policy, content moderation, and ethics were particularly hard hit: X disbanded its ethical artificial intelligence and election integrity teams, Google cut approximately one third of its team dedicated to addressing information manipulation and censorship, and Meta eliminated thousands of positions with an outsized impact on its trust and safety teams. Simultaneously, social media companies began restricting access to data used by researchers to assess threats to information space. X, for example, imposed exorbitant fees to access its API and Meta announced plans to shut down its widely used social monitoring platform, CrowdTangle. These developments have raised concerns around social media companies’ ability to anticipate and respond to online harms during a year in which elections are being held in more than fifty countries, including some of the world’s largest democracies. NDI seeks a short-term consultant to support an initiative to measure the impact of these developments on organizations and individuals operating in the democracy, human rights, and governance (DRG) space. These impacts will be measured through surveys and semi-structured interviews and will inform the development of a report to supplement the advocacy of NDI and other organizations in the DRG community around the accountability and transparency of social media companies. Deliverables - A synthesis of changes social media companies have made to their policies and enforcement practices since 2022 that represent a potential retrenchment on trust and safety and civic integrity, to be produced primarily through desk research - In consultation with NDI, develop and implement a survey or questionnaire to measure how DRG actors perceive the impact of these changes on democracy and information integrity. Illustratively, the survey could measure observed changes in resolutions to reporting of harmful behavior and accounts, the ability to conduct research on social media platforms, and access to channels for direct communication with social media companies - Semi-structured interviews with at least ten stakeholders, identified in coordination with NDI, to supplement the survey responses with more robust, detailed examples - An assessment of relevant evidence gathered by other organizations (as needed) - A narrative summary of the findings from the survey and interviews Expected Period of Work July 2024 - October 2024 Desired Qualifications - Familiarity with social media companies’ structures and policies - Demonstrated involvement in dialogue around tech sector trust and safety, accountability, transparency, etc. - Knowledge of developments in tech regulation (ex: the Digital Services Act, General Data Protection Regulation, other international laws) - Experience working internationally and/or with DRG actors - Proficiency in an additional language would be a plus Interested applicants should send a resume, cover letter and proposal submission to include a portfolio of past work and a detailed budget with fee requirements to Rachelle Faust at rfaust(a)ndi.org.
