Dear colleagues, I would like to invite you to an online panel on Queer and Trans Worker-Owned Technologies, September 17, 10AM EST. In Argentina and Brazil, queer and trans working people are organizing into cooperatives and collectives in the technology and delivery sectors. In this panel, trans workers from these countries will discuss: what do trans and queer perspectives mean for labour and technology? How can we think about this from/in Latin America? What are queer and trans worker-owned technologies? How can we build self-managed and collective work from trans and queer perspectives? What does it mean to design trans and queer technologies for workers? What do these perspectives mean for the platform economy? TrustDefender - An Information Literacy and Digital Citizenship Platform

TrustDefender What is it? TrustDefender is an information literacy and digital citizenship platform. We recognize the importance of digital-literate citizens. This platform could help some first-time voters. We hypothesize that having students take a few extra seconds to dig into the digital footprint of a Tweet will impact trust. Given this is my fourth decade of research, I know the results are going to be unpredictable with unintended consequences. Such is the history of information. What is the background story on TrustDefender.net? We are updating DiscoverText, a free web-based scientific research instrument, to explore gamification. Scholars use DiscoverText to search, filter, cluster, annotate, and machine-classify text data. Diverse scholars have published more than 600 research papers using these five pillars of text analytics (https://tinyurl.com/DTCitations) Specific game-oriented modifications to the annotation platform are scheduled to launch as TrustDefender https://trustdefender.net/ on August 27, 2024. Is TrustDefender a game? We are not sure yet. In recent meetings with a variety of scholars and gamification experts, the question was not resolved. Some of the measurement tools and methods were originally designed in 2007 ( https://cat.texifter.com/) as open source software and later developed as DiscoverText starting in 2010, and patented in 2016 under the title “System and method of classifier ranking for incorporation into enhanced machine learning” (https://patents.google.com/patent/US9275291B2/en) The core annotation mechanism loads data automatically and allows annotators to record observations with a single keystroke. We sought to understand the challenge of crowdsource annotation (ex., speed, consistency, domain knowledge, inter-rater reliability, gold standard validation, and "CoderRank") each of which have elements amenable to leaderboards, novel rankings, and competition. We have come to see Twitter itself as a live game platform. User behavior backs this up. Players across the political spectrum seek to game the system to earn status, influence, and power. We are trying to adapt, test, and possibly modify the rules of the game known as Twitter. What is the data? We are using existing and new custom Twitter datasets ranging from tens of thousands to several million curated Tweets. Some of the historical data include #metoo, #BLM, Trump, Biden, Flynn/QAnon, digital soldiers, AmericaFirst, Canadian elections, the Canadian trucker convoy, Canadian migration, and other important windows into the trust conundrum in North American politics. What is the goal of creating TrustDefender? One goal is to better understand how DiscoverText can be modified to have default, ready-to-play games, as well as the traditional framework where it is simply a flexible tool, like a spreadsheet. Leaders of the games will also be able to create new tasks, codes, rules, parameters, code books, assignments, peer groups, and focus the students. Much of the content of the games can be created by the professors or teams of students. Can you create new custom datasets using summer and fall queries? Yes, we have worked with academics regularly since 2010 to acquire custom datasets relevant to the themes central to their classrooms and research. We also provide free training. What are some examples of games? There will be archetypal game formats such as the deductive "live, deleted, suspended" and hybrid deductive/inductive "trust, don't trust, need more info" games. The core of this experiment is what students will see when they indicate that they "need more info" having been unable to trust or distrust a Tweet at first glance. The drill down will include adaptable options to quickly review the user profile page, as well as the follower and following lists. More fully inductive games such as "bot, troll, or citizen" are possible. Small adaptations of the existing crowdsource software will make the labeling task more game-like in TrustDefender. Students will train or play on default games out-of-the-box that are easy to launch, but professors will also be able to adapt the framework with very minor effort to define parameters for their own games. How long will it take to set up? There will be a very simplified onboarding process for creating new tasks or games, loading student lists, connecting students as peers within a class, and sending out tasks as homework. How long will a task or game take? That is up to the professor. We envision a wide variety of labeling tasks as short as 2-3 minutes or as long as it takes. Certain tasks produce conceptual saturation in a few minutes. Others require the classic deeper dive. Will there be deidentification options for the leaderboards in games with ranked outcomes? Yes, though every student will know where they wound up when there is, for example, a speed or accuracy ranking, as there will be in Live-Deleted-Suspended games. How long does it take to be fluent with the TrustDefender platform? Most people self-train on DiscoverText, but I strongly encourage you to book a meeting here (https://calendly.com/discovertext) and take the 30-minute TrustDefender training. You can still help to shape how this application works and improve the core ideas. It is an adaptable framework to inspire innovation not a rigid prescription of how to measure trust. Is there a scientific underpinning to the exercise? Definitely. For example, we are creating a framework for dividing students in a class into control and experimental groups. The goal is supporting professors interested in testing the impact on trust in control and experimental groups where: some get visibility to select metadata (experimental groups) some don't (the control groups), or some get visibility to just highly influential accounts (experimental groups) some don't (the control groups), some get visibility to just marginal accounts (experimental groups) some don't (the control groups). The number of possible permutations is large, and we don't think we have figured this all out. As an observer, when I am aware of just these three data points about a user, (1) statuses per day, (2) following per day, and (3) followers per day, it impacts my trust evaluation. Can professors and students use the data to publish their own scholarship? Absolutely. We want to generate many experiments in September and October 2024 so that professors and students can use their class data to publish blog posts, findings on social media, and scholarly research papers. *AoIR: THE ERAS TOUR* At #AoIR2024 in Sheffield, we will be celebrating AoIR’s 25th birthday. We are delighted to announce this year’s plenary panel that we are calling, *Reflections: 25 Years of (Ao) Internet Research*, also known as *AoIR: The Eras Tour*. We’ve invited seven AoIR members to each represent a five-year period in AoIR’s history, from its first conference in 2000, through to 2024 and beyond. Each panel member will deliver a short provocation, and we will then switch to a roundtable format, where panel members will answer questions from our Chair, before opening up to questions from audience members. The plenary panel will be followed by a drinks and finger food reception. We look forward to seeing you on *Thursday, 31 October 2024 *for what promises to be a wonderful celebration. With love, the #AoIR2024 organising committee <3 *CHAIR | Helen Kennedy, Professor of Digital Society, University of Sheffield (she/her). * *2000-2004 | Nancy Baym, Senior Principal Research Manager, Microsoft Research (she/her) + Steve Jones, UIC Distinguished Professor of Communication, Adjunct Professor of Computer Science, University of Illinois Chicago (he/him).* *Nancy*: My research focuses on how people interpret new communication technologies and incorporate them into their lives with what consequences for themselves, societies, and technological development. I was a founding member of AoIR, organized the first conference in 2000, and served as the first Vice President and second President. I think of internet research circa 2000-2005 as characterized by a focus on language, identity, and community, all topics that remain crucially important as we consider the infusion of large language models and other forms of AI into the internet. *Steve*: I suppose the question then was whether there was a scholarly space, for lack of a better term, for people who were studying internet and internet related things. What triggered AoIR was that I noticed people I knew from various disciplines all interested in what was happening with the internet and all unable to find much interest in it from their disciplinary colleagues. So I kind of put out a signal. Ever since I’ve wondered, is there a field? Should there be? Has internet research permeated so completely into existing disciplines as to make that moot? *2005-2009 | Susanna Paasonen, Professor of Media Studies, University of Turku (she/her). *I am interested in the value of sexual sociability online, plus the different vulnerabilities and intimacies that emerge in datafied culture. My first AoIR was in 2000 and I’ve since been program chair for Milwaukee in 2009, served on the Exec 2015-17 and co-chaired the doctoral colloquium five times altogether. My assigned era saw the emergence of social media: this was no minor transformation, and to an extent one that we’re still trying to get our heads around. *2010-2014 | Limor Shifman, Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (she/her).* I am currently studying how people from different cultures shape values through what they do on social media. My first AoIR conference, aptly titled “Let’s Play,” was in 2007 in Vancouver. It was formative for me in many ways. In a nutshell, I will frame the era between social networking sites and social media, zooming into the example of memes becoming “memes.” *2015-2019 | **Ready for it?** Raquel Recuero, Associate Professor in the Communication and Languages Department at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas/Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (she/her).* *Look what you made me do. *My work focuses on the challenges social media platforms pose to public discourse, especially in Latin America. *Don't blame me!* AoIR has been integral to my career with my first conference in Vancouver (2007), and I have also served as an Open Seat on the Executive Committee. *Wildest dreams*. The era of full platform API access began in 2015, but subsequent issues and the closure of these tools now raise concerns about the future of internet research. *2020-2024 | Crystal Abidin, Professor of Internet Studies, Curtin University (she/her).* I broadly study influencers and social media pop culture in the Asia Pacific region and why everyday people love and hate them, but my research is also driven by what makes me happy and what makes me angry – how can we Spark More Joy and how can we fight The Bad Guys? I attended my first AoIR as a PhD student when it was held in my area of the world in Daegu (2014) with many thanks to an invitation to join a panel by Julian Hopkins, I served on the Exec for 4 years (2017–2021), and hope I don't retire until after I attend the 50th anniversary conference of AoIR <3. 2020–2024 was the era of What Is Even Happening: Pandemic, Infodemic, Grief; Platforms, Deplatforms, Grief; Creators, Content, Grief; War, Conflict, Grief; Automation, AI, Grief. *Futures | Catherine Knight Steele, Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Maryland College Park, Director of the Black Communication and Technology Lab.* My work at the moment considers the relationship between Black Joy and digitality, including work on speculation, automation, and manifestations of pleasure and pain online. I attended my first AoIR conference in 2010 as a graduate student studying the blogosphere and Black feminism. Watching conversations about race at AoIR move from somewhat passive apathy to more direct engagement on a global scale, the future of the organization and of internet research more broadly is dependant upon our willingness and insistence upon centering these discussions in our work and bringing this critical eye into more public dialogues about our digital futures.
