The AoIR Nancy Baym Annual Book Award committee is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s competition. Close to 30 excellent books were submitted for this year’s award and that fact alone is an index of the intellectual vibrancy of AoIR as a community of scholars, researchers, and teachers. The winner of this year’s AoIR Nancy Baym Book Annual Award is Samuel Woolley for *Manufacturing Consensus: Understanding Propaganda in the Era of Automation and Anonymity* (Yale University Press). The committee unanimously agreed that Chris Chesher’s *Invocational Media: Reconceptualising the Computer* (Bloomsbury) is deserving of an honourable mention. The committee agreed that Wooley’s *Manufacturing Consensus* constitutes a distinctive contribution to and, perhaps more significantly, a potentially important political intervention in, the scholarship of dis/misinformation in the social media platform ecology. The book addresses one of the most important issues in contemporary internet research, namely the rise of computational and algorithmic propaganda that affects social media users across the globe. In advancing his argument, Wooley develops a nuanced and supple STS framework for the critical analysis of computational propaganda, which fruitfully engages and significantly revises the traditional Herman/Chomsky model of mass media propaganda. Moreover, the book stands out in the crowded field of dis/misinformation studies through its inclusive optic that scans and assesses cases from around the globe and, in so doing, actually gives voice to a heterogenous array of people, experiences, and ideas. Finally, the committee agreed that Wooley’s writing style appeals to both academic and non-academic audiences, striking a balance between a readable format for non-experts, and complexity in terms of method and theory. The book is based on solid scholarship but is accessible to citizens and decision-makers. In today’s political environment, it could be transformative. This is a theoretically interesting and conceptually provocative work that offers an innovative way of guiding us to historically reconsider the distinctive ontological registers of computers as they mediate human-machine interactivity through symbolic and computational practices of “invocation”. Members of the committee all agreed that the book evinced the all-too-rare virtue of academic writing that is theoretically rich but accessible to a wide audience beyond scholars in this field. With this special issue, my colleagues and I hope to bring together current linguistics research into the manosphere, networked online misogyny, and online antifeminist backlash. We are especially interested in receiving contributions which focus on contexts and social media platforms outside of the UK and the USA, where the data covers languages other than English, and/or contributions which posit concrete, research-based interventions to these issues. Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce that the new issue of Essachess journal has been published: "Digital Methods and Fields: Feminist Perspectives". This issue examines how digital tools, methods, fields, and research objects transform the methodologies of the humanities and social sciences while challenging the gender system. From a feminist perspective, it argues that science and technology are not “pure,” that digital calculations are not neutral, and that massively collected data do not guarantee objectivity. Operating on the principle that knowledge production is situated, this issue questions the gender biases that appear in the production and analysis of digital data and explores how these biases can be leveraged to develop more reflexive and inclusive research. By demonstrating how digital technology disrupts gender boundaries, this issue addresses the challenges that quantitative data pose to gender. It investigates how feminist research can enhance digital methods, promote ethical approaches, and critique the concentration of power within socio-digital platforms. Location: Strong preference for Montreal (hybrid), though other locations will be considered *About Abundant Intelligences* Abundant Intelligences is an ambitious, large-scale six-year research program exploring how to integrate Indigenous Knowledges and Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. It is conducted by an international research team, co- directed by Prof. Lewis at the Indigenous Futures Research Centre at Concordia University, Montreal, and Prof. Hemi Whaanga at Massey University in New Zealand. The research team currently consists of 48 co-investigators and collaborators at 13 universities/research institutes and 8 community-based organizations in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand. The research program takes on the challenge of imagining, designing, and developing AI based on Indigenous Knowledge (IK) systems. Our overall objective is to explore how IK systems might provide pathways towards rebuilding AI’s epistemological foundations to transform these tools away from colonial practices of exclusion, extraction, manipulation, and eradication and into engines of abundance for increasing our care of one another and our world. Abundant Intelligences mobilizes an international and interdisciplinary team of experts, coalesced in locally-rooted ‘Pods’, to collaborate with Indigenous communities and learn from, and with, their knowledge holders to bring novel perspectives to transforming AI. It allows us to think about AI from across disciplinary and cultural boundaries and thus to expand the operational definition(s) of intelligence to include a wider spectrum of behaviours that humans and non-humans use to make sense of the world. Exploring epistemologies and methods beyond the Western approaches favoured by current AI research, we draw upon Indigenous epistemologies to develop imaginations, frameworks, and languages to enrich our understanding of what it means to be intelligent. In doing so, we are establishing new community-oriented methods for creating culturally-grounded AI systems better suited to Indigenous contexts, ways of knowing, and community flourishing. At the same time, our work will inform AI research beyond Indigenous contexts, contributing to the field generally so it can better support humane and abundant futures for all. This position will support this work through research on Indigenous data sovereignty, community protocols, and cultural & legal regimes for protecting cultural property within the context of AI research; developing protocols, methods, and tools for protecting and sharing Indigenous data to help in developing advanced technologies such as AI; and disseminating the knowledge acquired within the Partnership and in external publication and presentation venues. * Call for Abstracts * AlgoSoc International Conference 2025 The Future of Public Values in the Algorithmic Society April 10-11, 2025 | Felix Meritis in Amsterdam, the Netherlands We invite abstracts for ‘The Future of Public Values in the Algorithmic Society’, a two-day international conference hosted by AlgoSoc, taking place at Felix Meritis in Amsterdam on April 10 and 11, 2025. Public Values in the Algorithmic Society (AlgoSoc) is an interdisciplinary research program which responds to the urgent need for an informed societal perspective on automation and automated decision-making. Grounded in a deep understanding of the systemic changes that automated decision-making systems imply for core public institutions, for society, and for how public values are conceptualised and ultimately realised, AlgoSoc develops solutions for the design of governance frameworks needed to complement technology-driven initiatives in the algorithmic society. AlgoSoc is a Dutch government funded collaboration between the universities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft, Utrecht and Tilburg, integrating expertise from law, computer science, the humanities and social sciences. * Conference Theme * Realising public values in the algorithmic society is only in parts a technological challenge and there are limits to what can be achieved with value-sensitive technology design. More than anything, realising public values in AI, algorithms and computational infrastructures is a profound societal challenge that involves a whole ecosystem of actors and depends on the complex social, cultural, economic, technical, organisational, and institutional contexts, in which these systems are grounded, used, and contested. Similarly, public values are not static but develop dynamically in response to new technologies, social transformations, (political) power struggles, and the myriad interactions of people with technologies. Current regulatory approaches around the world aim to make digital technology more responsible, more ethical, and more cognisant of the values that characterise the societies in which they are embedded. The EU AI Act is a point in case, seeking to make AI trustworthy and ensuring that: “AI systems respect fundamental rights, safety and ethical principles.” The primary goal of the US Executive Order is that AI systems function as intended, are resilient against misuse or dangerous modifications, are ethically developed and operated in a secure manner, and are compliant with applicable Federal laws and policies. And in China, Generative AI must adhere to “Core Socialist Values”. Common to all these approaches is that they are technology-centric, concentrating on the process of developing and deploying AI products and services in society. The goal of this conference is to re-center the debate on public values in AI, algorithms and their computational infrastructures, from a primarily technological to a societal challenge. The Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) funds innovative projects that deal with the social opportunities and challenges of the digital transformation. We support individual researchers and groups. You want to spend a sabbatical in a vibrant interdisciplinary research community? Become a fellow at CAIS! A fellowship at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) releases you from your regular work obligations and opens up new perspectives. As a fellow, you can spend either six or three months in Bochum, Germany. During this period, we will finance your sabbatical leave from work through compensation (e.g. for a teaching substitute). Alternatively, we will pay grants of up to 2.000 € per month. You can invite guests for collaboration and will receive financial support for research expenses. Individual offices and meeting rooms with modern facilities offer optimal working conditions. In addition, we will provide comfortable apartments free of charge.
