The Association of Internet Researchers is pleased to call for submissions for the 2025 AoIR Dissertation Awards. To be eligible for the AoIR Dissertation Awards, a PhD dissertation in the area of internet research must have been filed in the 2024 calendar year. *Nominations must be received by 12 May 2025*. All methods and disciplines are welcome. This year, because we are taking our conference to Brazil, where there is a large academic community that writes in Portuguese, we will also be awarding a Dissertation Award for a doctoral dissertation written in Portuguese. This is an occasional award; we will consider offering a similar award when holding the conference in countries in which it makes sense to do so. Submissions details: - A nomination letter that explains why the dissertation is deserving of the award and how it contributes to internet research - A PDF copy of the dissertation should be emailed to dissertationaward [at] aoir.org - The graduate or their supervisor must be a member of AoIR (by 12 May 2025) - Self-nominations are permitted - “Filed in 2024” means that the dissertation has been fully defended, all edits complete, and filed/published in 2024 (this date will usually appear on the front cover or front pages of the dissertation). A letter that the student’s committee has approved the PhD can also establish this. The recipients of these awards will be announced mid-year 2025. In addition to winning a cash prize, the individual will be presented an award during the Association General Meeting(AGM) at the #AoIR2025 conference in October. In addition, and if relevant, AoIR will contribute up to US$1000 towards the cost of making a publication from the winners’ dissertation Open Access. (Please note, this is not the same as Article Processing Payments; we will support publication in reputable journals only.) The committee to judge dissertations in English is this year comprised of Kate O'Riordan (University of Sussex and Committee Chair), Jean-Christophe Plantin (London School of Economics), Usha Raman (University of Hyderabad), and Vanessa Valiati (Universidade Feevale-RS). The committee to judge dissertations in Portuguese is comprised of Nanci Oddone (Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) and Committee Chair), Raquel Recuero (Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel)), Rafael Grohmann (University of Toronto) and João C. A remote option is provided to make this international research forum more accessible. *Addressing Global HCI Challenges at the Time of Geopolitical Tensions through Planetary Thinking and Indigenous Methodologies* Workshop@INTERACT2025 https://ifip-idid.org/globalhci/ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://ifip-idid.org/globalhci/__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt5…> HCI researchers and practitioners witness an even more divided world in 2025 that manifests global inequalities and disparities, triggered by local politics and global and regional geopolitical tensions, and perpetuated by sociocultural structures. This workshop invites participants to reimagine a new world order of HCI at the time of geopolitical tensions with the emerging ontology of the planetary thinking. We aim to explore local design principles, rationales, and heuristics for global HCI design projects. It is our first step towards defining how planetary thinking can help scale up HCI design approaches to address global challenges and risks to nurture the well-being of diverse species for and with the planet that we live on. Our goal is to achieve technology diversity by including diverse local values and intellectual traditions in our design processes with an emic strategy inspired by indigenous design methodologies. For example, a business knowledge sharing system developed with participatory Ubuntu values in South Africa, or a Scandinavian minimalist HCI design of an energy-saving system. This full-day hybrid workshop is organized by IFIP TC13 WG13.8 – Interaction Design for International Development. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a position paper or a design case on the subject matter. The collection of accepted position papers and design cases will be shared one week before the workshop—extended versions of the workshop papers will be published by Springer in the LNCS series. Online Media and Global Communication, a Scopus-indexed journal Call for Papers – Special Issue Global Diaspora and Social Media Submission Deadline: August 4, 2025 Anticipated Publication: Spring 2026 Editors of the Special Issue: Xi Cui – College of Charleston, USA Sumin Zhao – Edinburgh University, UK Social media platforms play an essential role in the formation and maintenance of global diaspora communities, enabling dispersed members to maintain cross-border connections, negotiate collective identities, and mobilize around shared meanings and histories. This special issue builds upon foundational scholarship on digital diasporas while advancing new theoretical frameworks to understand contemporary social media practices among diaspora communities. We seek research that critically examines how social media mediates diasporic experiences through identity construction, political participation, language and culture preservation, and transnational social and economic exchanges. We encourage submissions that theorize the evolving relationship between social media and diaspora engagement in an era of platformization and rising anti-globalization sentiment and geopolitical tensions worldwide. We are also interested in research exploring personal experiences of diaspora members, including the negotiation of ‘old’ and ‘new’ identities, emotional responses to separation and reunion, psychological well-being, and everyday social media practices. Studies investigating how emotions like nostalgia, hope, and belonging are articulated through social media, as well as research on how different platforms shape cognition and memory among diaspora individuals, will make valuable contributions. The special issue aims to cover diverse methodological approaches that capture the complexity of diaspora social media communication, including (digital) ethnography, (critical) discourse analysis, quantitative survey, content analysis, as well as research utilizing computational tools. We particularly welcome mixed-methods research that combines these approaches to provide multidimensional perspectives on how social media is transforming diaspora experiences in transnational contexts. We also encourage works that explore diaspora communities that are understudied and underrepresented in current literature. The special issue will address, but not be limited to, the following topics: * Identity expression and negotiation on social media * Contestation and construction of collective memory on social media * Political participation in home and/or host societies through social media * Transnational cultural interaction mediated by diaspora’s social media uses * Social media and viral events for diasporic communities * Diasporic labor and social media platform * Diasporic communities in the global south * Mis- and dis-information on social media among diasporic communities * Algorithmic moderation of diasporic information flows on social media * Psychological processes of diasporas’ emotions, attitudes, and well-being * Surveillance, censorship, and resistance regarding diasporic social media uses * Longitudinal and comparative studies of diasporic social media uses * New discursive resources such as meme and AI-generated contents * For paper format, please refer to the OMGC citation style with structured abstract at https://www.degruyter.com/journal/key/omgc/html, click under “Submit” * Manuscript text length should be within 7,500 words without references, tables, and figures. Humans interested in the human experience can use technology as an interview medium and setting. But there is more involved with online interviews than simply logging in. Careful thought is needed to decide what options best fit the project. Text-based or multimedia? Synchronous or asynchronous? Structured or conversational?
