--------------------------------------------------------------------- SOCIAL MEDIA ACCESS DAYS Social media data between research and infrastructure - sustainable archiving, cataloguing and access 17.3.-19.3.2026 German National Library (Frankfurt am Main) Website: https://www.dnb.de/EN/smad --------------------------------------------------------------------- (German version below) Social media data between research and infrastructure - sustainable archiving, cataloguing and access CONFERENCE TOPICS: Online platforms, especially social media platforms, are both research objects and sources of data for a variety of research approaches in the humanities and social sciences, computer science, and the natural and life sciences. The historical evolution of social media makes them a part of our digital cultural heritage. However, the processes used by institutions to archive and document social media data are still only rudimentary, not least because of their economic, social and aesthetic characteristics and the unique attributes of media technology. Researchers, research institutions and cultural heritage institutions therefore face a wide range of problems in terms of their archiving, indexing and use. Researchers who wish to work with social media data also encounter numerous new challenges, especially when fundamental changes such as the elimination of application programming interfaces (APIs) impact access to specific data from online platforms. The archiving, indexing and use of dynamic data from social media are therefore fraught with problems which researchers, research institutions, libraries and archives have to tackle in a consistent manner. Ideally, solutions to these problems should be developed cooperatively, since this requires extensive effort which would be beyond the scope of a single data community or discipline. The aim of the conference is therefore to enable libraries, archives, infrastructural facilities, research institutions and researchers to network and exchange experiences with archiving and the sustainable use of data and digital objects from social media. We explicitly welcome case studies and presentations on solutions and their practical implementation as well as reports on research findings. We are particularly interested in contributions on the following key topics: · Sustainable infrastructure for collecting and providing access to social media content · Interaction between researchers and archiving institutions · Ethical issues and best practices · Legal issues and solutions · Challenges posed by restrictive data access from social media platforms · Experiences with data access in the context of the Digital Services Act · Status and preservation of social media from an archival and cultural-historical perspective, e.g. posts, interactions, platform elements · Consolidation of collections, corpora, holdings · Metadata, data documentation and cataloguing social media data · Use of AI & LLMs for data documentation and indexing purposes · Initiatives focusing on archiving and access · Concepts for the provision and use of derivatives (aggregated or derivative formats) from social media · Experiences with the reusability of available data DATE & LANGUAGE: The conference will take place from 17 to 19 March 2026 at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main. The main conference language is German. However, contributions can also be submitted in English. We aim to schedule all English-language presentations together in one day, if possible. SUBMISSIONS: We look forward to receiving your submissions for presentations and your proposals for tutorials, workshops or interactive formats. PRESENTATIONS / POSTERS: Please submit your proposals in the form of abstracts containing a maximum of 500 words (plus bibliographies and max. 1 illustration). Contributions can be based on research findings or personal experience and may be presented in German or English. The programme committee will decide which contributions to accept as oral presentations and which as posters. Forschung, Forschungsinstitute und Kulturerbe-Einrichtungen sind dadurch hinsichtlich der Archivierung, Erschließung und Nachnutzung vor vielfältige Probleme gestellt. Und auch Forschende, die mit Social Media Daten arbeiten wollen, sehen sich immer neuen Herausforderungen gegenüber, insbesondere wenn sich der Zugang zu bestimmten Online-Plattform-Daten beispielsweise durch den Wegfall von Programmierschnittstellen (APIs) grundlegend ändert. Die Archivierung, Erschließung und Nachnutzung dynamischer Daten aus sozialen Medien ist also mit Problemstellungen konfrontiert, die Forschende, Forschungseinrichtungen, Bibliotheken und Archive in ähnlicher Weise betreffen, und für die im besten Fall gemeinsam Lösungsansätze entwickelt werden können. Dies bedarf umfassender Anstrengungen, die nicht allein aus einer Community oder Disziplin heraus zu leisten sind. Dear all, I would like to organise a panel titled *“Disinformation and Media Trust in Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea Region after the Start of the Full-Scale War in Ukraine”* at the 11th Annual Conference *Knowing Eastern Europe and the Baltics*, which will be held at the Centre for East European and Baltic Studies, Södertörn University (Stockholm, Sweden). The panel intends to discuss the specificity of the Kremlin’s misinformation campaigns related to the war in Ukraine and their impact on media trust in the region. Topics for discussion may include, though are not limited to: · Goals, narratives, and rhetoric of Kremlin disinformation campaigns launched since the start of the war; · Localisation strategies: how disinformation is tailored to specific linguistic, cultural, and political contexts; · Impact of the war on public trust in national and international media across Eastern Europe and the Baltic region. For the accepted presenters, free accommodation for two nights can be arranged by the conference organiser. The conference covers all aspects of knowledge discovery from data, with a strong focus on graph learning and knowledge graph, including algorithms, software, platforms. ICKG 2025 intends to draw researchers and application developers from a wide range of areas such as knowledge engineering, representation learning, big data analytics, statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, data mining, knowledge visualization, high performance computing, and World Wide Web etc. By promoting novel, high quality research findings, and innovative solutions to address challenges in handling all aspects of learning from data with dependency relationship. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society. Awards, including Best Paper, Best Paper Runner up, Best Student Paper, Best Student Paper Runner up, will be conferred at the conference, with a check and a certificate for each award. The conference also features a survey track to accept survey papers reviewing recent studies in all aspects of knowledge discovery and graph learning. At least five high quality papers will be invited for a special issue of the Knowledge and Information Systems Journal, in an expanded and revised form. In addition, at least eight quality papers will be invited for a special issue of Data Intelligence Journal in an expanded and revised form with at least 30% difference. For survey track paper, please preface the descriptive paper title with “Survey:”, followed by the actual paper title. The workshop aims to bring together and connect scholars of temporality and algorithmic media so as to identify common ground, stimulate exchange, and initiate critical comparative research. Digital Intimacies 11: The Love of Machines Call for Papers Conference Dates: 3-5 December 2025 Location: The University of Sydney (Day 1: Virtual, Days 2–3: In-person, to be adjusted if needed) Submission Deadline: 29 August 2025 In the contemporary intimacy landscape, machines have emerged not merely as mediators but as potential objects of desire. From sophisticated dating apps that claim to decode compatibility, to conversational agents scripting our seductions, to synthetic lovers rendering human connection obsolete—machines don't just shape digital intimacies; they reconfigure the terrain upon which intimacy itself is constructed. For Digital Intimacies 11, we invoke Alan Turing’s seminal question: “Can machines think?” — but with a crucial reimagining for our era: “Can machines love? Or, how can machines love?” Just as Turing proposed his famous imitation game to test machine intelligence, we now face intimate interactions where the boundaries between human and machines blur. When we can no longer distinguish between human and machine-generated affection, what becomes of intimacy itself? We invite submissions across disciplines to engage with, question, appreciate, and evaluate the manifold manifestations of machines in intimate spheres: machines that we love, machines that we use for love, machines that can or cannot love, machines that serve as signs of love, and more. Submission Categories We seek submissions on themes related to digital intimacies, the love of machines, and suggested topics above: * Individual papers: Traditional academic presentations. * Pre-constituted panels: Panels featuring 4 papers from researchers across at least two different universities. Contributions are welcome from scholars at all career stages, with HDR students and ECRs especially encouraged to apply. We invite perspectives from diverse fields, including but not limited to, media studies, cultural studies, film studies, sociology, political science, human geography, computer science, HCI, psychology, education, and related disciplines. Registration and Costs Presentations and attendance are free of charge. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided daily for in-person attendees. To make the event freely accessible to all, attendees will be responsible for their own lunches. Optional self-funded social events include a dinner on Day 1 and drinks after the conclusion of the conference on Day 3. Dear colleagues, We are delighted to announce the launch of the inaugural issue of *Communication and Change* (C&C), a new peer-reviewed, open-access, international journal supported by the School of Journalism at Fudan University and published in partnership with Springer Nature. This issue features two launch editorials, one from the editorial team and the other by Co-Editor-in-Chief James E. Katz. It also includes seven research articles authored by globally renowned scholars, all centered around the theme “Communication Research in the Age of AI,” accompanied by a special thematic introduction. We are pleased to offer a number of Diversity Travel Grants to support early-career academics and PhD students from under-represented groups to attend the IRTF meetings co-located with the IETF-124 <https://www.ietf.org/meeting/124/> Meeting in Montreal, Canada, in November 2025. The selection criteria for IRTF Diversity Grants will prioritize people who: - Are from a demographic that is under-represented in the IRTF and would have difficulty getting to the IETF meeting <https://ietf.org/meeting/> otherwise; - Are PhD students or early-career academics (PhD students should have completed at least one year of full-time study in their PhD programme; early-career academics should normally be within their first four years of paid post-PhD employment at a University or other research institute); - Can demonstrate engagement with research of relevance to the IRTF (work of relevance to all areas of IRTF will be considered, and specific contributions to IRTF Research Groups, such as presentations are encouraged).
