Warm regards, ECPR Research Network on Digital Authoritarianism Steering Committee ----------------- Abstract Working-class support for reactionary politics is as old as capitalism itself, yet it remains one of the most paradoxical features of modern democracy. Long celebrated as the vanguard of progressive change, significant segments of low-income groups are now aligning with illiberal regimes, authoritarian populists, and far-right movements across the globe. This talk explores why. Drawing on twenty-five years of ethnographic research with workers in Brazil, and more recently in India and the Philippines, it argues that this alignment cannot be explained by economic deprivation, resentment, or cultural backlash alone. Instead, digital technologies emerge as pivotal in reshaping working-class political subjectivities. By introducing the concept of the authoritariat, the talk shows how platform labour, gig work, and the promise of self-employment destabilise democratic bonds while fostering new desires for recognition, autonomy, and self-worth. These dynamics are rooted in long histories of colonial marginality yet amplified in the 21st century by the deregulation of digital labour and the rise of Big Tech. Far from being trapped in nostalgia, reactionary politics derives its strength from projecting an imagined future—one that offers both rage and dreams to those historically excluded. In reframing debates on working-class politics toward the Global South, the talk theorises a new, deeply ambivalent political formation—part authoritarian, part conservative, part libertarian—that is profoundly consequential for the future of democracy. *Rosana Pinheiro-Machado*, an anthropologist, is a Professor of Global Studies at University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland. She is the Director of the Digital Economy and Extreme Politics Lab (DeepLab) and the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council- funded project Flexible Work, Rigid Politics in Brazil, India, and the Philippines. Her ethnographic research explores the intersection of reactionary politics and precariousness in the emerging economies of the Global South.

Dear AoIR members, We are delighted to share with you the call for the *I Latin American Forum for Intelligence Studies (inteLA)* *Date*: 25-26 March, 2026 *Location:* Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS) *Organization:* University of Hamburg (UHH), Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS), Latin American Network for Surveillance, Technology and Society Studies (Lavits), School of Applied Sciences – Unicamp, and Legiscraft *About:* The Latin American Forum on Intelligence Studies (inteLA) is an initiative created to address a practical gap: the need to establish, in Latin America, a regional hub that continuously brings together emerging and ongoing debates across a broad academic and critical field on intelligence and democracy. As a way of building and advancing capacities for analyzing risks, priorities, and institutional options in the region — avoiding a fragmented and geopolitically isolated scenario — the proposal is to move forward with best practices for formulating proposals grounded in Latin American institutional, technological, and socioeconomic realities. Dialogue with other regions is equally important, both because of the international nature of the subject and through multilateral strategies. inteLA therefore brings together researchers, public officials, and civil society actors to build a regional point of reference: a forum capable of sustaining high-quality research while maintaining close ties with institutional practice. In doing so, inteLA paves the way for Latin American scholarship and perspectives to engage more directly with international debates. Rather than treating the region as a marginal case, the Forum seeks to ensure that its experiences — from democratic transitions to institutional constraints and governance dilemmas — are taken seriously in the way intelligence is studied and understood. The first edition of inteLA is dedicated to the oversight of intelligence in democracy. On the one hand, technological change is rapidly expanding the intrusive capacities of the State. On the other hand, traditional oversight mechanisms remain limited, creating an environment in which serious abuses can flourish and democratic safeguards may gradually erode over time. In this context, institutional, multi-stakeholder, and multilateral dialogues are central to the democratic development of the field. Thee call for book proposals for the CPCP series is out. For 2026, the main topic is: Hybrid Media Worlds: Practices, Actors, and Cultural Negotiations. This Call for Book Proposals for the *Communication Processes and Cultural Practices* series invites scholars to explore hybridization as a key analytical lens for examining contemporary media practices. We welcome proposals that critically investigate hybrid forms of consumption and production, shifting modes of participation and recognition, and the cultural, social, and political implications of living and acting within hybrid media environments. The series welcomes both single-authored monographs and edited collections that offer original theoretical perspectives, robust empirical research, or innovative methodological approaches. Proposals may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: - Hybrid forms of media production: between professionalization, platformization, and informal creativity - Consumption as participation, labour, and identity performance - The blurring of roles: audiences, users, producers, prosumers, influencers, and cultural intermediaries - Hybrid cultural economies: visibility, reputation, data, affect, and monetization - Platform cultures and the reconfiguration of creative and communicative practices - Media hybridization across genres, formats, and industries (journalism, entertainment, art, activism, education) - Algorithmic mediation and its impact on practices of recognition and self-positioning - Hybrid publics, communities, and networked forms of belonging - Methodological hybridization in media and communication research - Power, inequalities, and exclusions in hybrid media practices Interdisciplinary approaches drawing from communication and media studies, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, digital humanities, and related fields are strongly encouraged. The Demos and Tools Track at VARIABILITY 2026 invites compelling live presentations and submissions of innovative tools, practical demonstrations, and curated datasets that support research and practice in software and systems product line engineering, reuse, and configuration. Each submission must include: • A paper of up to 4 pages, including references and figures. • An optional appendix of up to 2 pages (not included in the proceedings), describing the planned live demonstration or dataset usage scenario. • A link to a short video (max. 5 minutes) illustrating the tool, demonstration, or dataset in action. Papers should briefly describe the theoretical foundation, with a focus on practical aspects such as software architecture, implementation decisions, usage methodology, and validation through case studies or benchmarks. Public availability of tools and datasets (preferably under open-source/open-data licenses) is strongly encouraged. Where availability is not possible, submissions should explain the reasons. This talk will discuss how we can trouble AI, including through centring voices and knowledges which have been excluded from AI’s development, challenging dominant narratives of what ‘responsible AI’ looks like and whose interests are served by these visions. Drawing on critical data studies, speculative design, and abolitionist thought, Inclusive Futures brings to the fore an essential yet under-researched aspect of contemporary AI systems: their increasingly colonial and racialised ideologies. In participation with community-led social justice organisations and networks advocating for equity in AI, Inclusive Futures employs speculative, participatory methods for re-imagining AI from a bottom-up, justice-oriented perspective.
