AIR-MEET INVITATION: AoIR 2002 CONFERENCE IN THE NETHERLANDS The Association of Internet Researchers will meet October 13-16 2002, for the first time in Europe, at the International Institute of Infonomics (www.infonomics.nl/aoir) (University of Maastricht), in Maastricht, The Netherlands. When it comes to a successful conference, there are three critical factors: the quality of the planning that goes into the program, the quality of the environment, and the quality of the facilities. AoIR is committed to planning conferences from the ground up. We invite and encourage the participation of all members in the planning process. As this is our first European meeting, we particularly hope that our European members will participate. If you are interested in helping to plan this conference, you can subscribe to air-meet, the list of the conference planning committee. Next week those on the air-meet list will be discussing (at the very least) a draft Call For Papers, and preferred keynote speakers. Berit Skog at the Department of Sociology at NTNU is leading one of these projects (the most established one as far as I know), and I presume she would know about the statistics if there are any or forward your request (berit.skog(a)svt.ntnu.no) It is a really interesting question you are asking, and I'd really appreciate it if you could post the numbers to the list if you find any. My guess is that the differences are huge between countries: in Norway for instance (where I come from), "everyone" owns a cell phone (and the majority of children above 12, creatin a severe gap between the have's and the have not's). The costs for using it for regular calls are quite high though (in opposition to the US), whereas sending text messages on the other hand is very cheap. Teenagers hardly ever use their phones to speak, but as a written kind of medium, and several research projects focus on the specific language evolving through cell phone text messaging. Hi, A pedagogical question. Can folks who use films in their internet studies classes offer a list of them, either to this list, or to me personally? Equally important, tho, would be a few sentences of WHY you teach them or HOW you teach them in relation to the issues yr class explores. We all know the ususal suspects: Bladerunner, for example, and those films that disrupt narrative (Time Code) but what other films or videos and why and how? Thanks in advance. Frank's dream is a great one -- however, in the early ventures to do just that--establish sites for downloading films--legal definitions of distribution came into question. A couple of sites tried to be web distributors for independent (mainly) movies. The problem, however, was with the way film production contracts are written. Many filmmakers obtain everything--from rights to songs on the soundtrack to talent--contingent on the distribution level of the movie. World-wide distribution rights for a song on the soundtrack require a whole different league of payment than for "festival rights." Similarly, there are problems with contingent payment for actors and screenwriters whose contracts often stipulate pay structures based on distribution and percentages of sales. Legally, the web is international distribution, and while there was a market demand for films that hadn't been picked up by distributors, the tangle of contracts on the production side prevent production companies from being able to explore the option. Distributors, though, could get involved in internet distribution, and at the Toronto film festival a small distributor just announced the online distribution of one of their features, which is the first to be offered online by an independent distributor. The major studios have only recently formed a couple of alliances for video on demand, Movies.com (Disney and News Corp) and Movie Fly (MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner), and infrastructure costs alone are estimated at least $50 million. Microsoft's Intertainer launched last week in some digital cable and broadband markets with the 8,000 programs and movies they obtained distribution rights for. If Intertainer's initial pricing is any indication, it's not going to be cheap--$8 per month for the service and $3-4 per movie. The beginning fifteen or twenty minutes of Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times is hilariously funny, but also helps the students to understand the critique of modernism, Taylorism, and Fordism. I show it in our Introduction to the Information Society course to help students see a contrast between the "efficient, modernized world," and the networked, information world.
