I'm very eager to hear what people have to say on this topic. We currently have absolutely no budget for films, and a very limited supply on hand, so I'm limited to what I'm willing to buy for myself, what I can tape off of television, and stuff I can easily rent from a video store. Here is what I'm currently using: I use the first hour of the three-part series (bought through PBS) entitled Triumph of the Nerds (I think I'm remembering that title right). It gives the students a bit of background on the development of the PC, but more importantly, I use it to talk about computer-related cultures and about identity and computers. The "nerds" are presented in this video in pretty stereotypical ways, and I discuss with the class what the stereotypes are, and what the implications and connections are concerning gender, class, and race. I show the two-part series (also from PBS) Digital Divide (http://www.pbs.org/digitaldivide) This primarily discusses the issue of computers in schools and does a pretty good job of considering issues of race, class and (some) gender. I like that it does not take for granted that computers *should* be in schools and that it brings up some issues regarding the future of work and the political implications of partnerships between corporations and public schools. Finally, I do a segment in my class on science fiction representations of computers and how these representations connect to cultural ideas (including hopes and fears) regarding computer technology. All of my students have seen (and mostly love) The Matrix, so I require them to rent it and view it again to discuss in conjunction with some classic "net"-related science fiction novels. I am considering putting together some clips from older science fiction movies (Colossus: The Forbin Project, 2001, Demon Seed, stuff like that) and projecting them through a laptop, but it is taking me awhile to find them all at local video stores. I like to use the Warriors of the Net movie, because it nicely illustrates how tcp/ip, routers/routing and stuff like firewalls work. A _lot_ of students think that the Internet equals the Web and starting with the basics of tcp/ip packets, routing and protocols helps them along in visualizing other ways of interacting using CMC besides webpages. - a response on Ulla Bunz's about internet cafes in airports - I also have travelled a bit in these past couple months. I didn't see any internet cafes in European airports, not in Amsterdam, Brussel (Charleroi), and Pisa. But I did see both internet access point and internet cafes in Singapore Changi Airport and internet cafes in Bangkok airport. Dear all! I'm delighted to get so much feedback on my "Internet Cafes" posting. Some of you have posted to the list, some have written to me personally. It seems that there are 1) pay phone similar devices in quite a few airports, but they are expensive and not very handy 2) executive lounges and the like, or jacks where people with laptops (and no, believe it or not, not everyone owns one of those...especially those who have not dedicated their life to Internet Research) can connect 3) very few airports such as Singapore that actually have Cyber Cafes or similar access locations. I'm quite intrigued by this now, and I'd like to ask you to keep the messages coming. If you send to me at ulla(a)ku.edu I will post a summary to the list in a while. Commander Laurel's Excellent Adventure

This is an interview I did recently with Brenda Laurel, author of the Utopian Entrepreneur very recently published by MIT Press. Brenda Laurel is a very long time culture worker in the area of computer game design and human interface design. Utopian Entrepreneur is about her experiences 'in the industry' of interaction and what is mis-named 'newMedia' design. The Utopian Entrepreneur is published as part of MIT's new Mediawork pamphlets series which means it is short (90+ pages) and totally to the point. I'm using it in my 'Art, Entertainment and Information' grad class at IU this term and the students like it a lot. All of it is interesting but her discussion of why she wants to be viewed as a 'culture worker' as opposed to an artist is definitely worth the price of admission, particularly in light of September 11th. internet cafes in airports

In reference to Ulla Bunz's query about internet cafes in airports, on my way home from Minneapolis, I found internet cafes both in Tokyo's Narita airport as well as Singapore's airport. I am not sure about other Asian cities, but there are at least two airports with internet cafes. Singapore's Changi airport also has wireless ports available in the airport for use by travellers. Has no one thought about this before? Is this an unexplored business niche that some Jeff Bezos has to act upon? Are there laws restricting web use in airports? Doesn't anyone else care? Or am I just blind? Certainly I can't be the only person who'd like to check their email on a two or three hour lay-over? I'm wondering: Can anyone think of an airport that HAS an Internet cafe? If so, do you know who runs it? If not, does anyone know why this lack exists? I've always wanted to do an ethnography on relationship formation and maintenance among long-term backpackers (there's five main types of people, and two main types of relationships, which are maintained mainly through email). Maybe we need a study on information acquisition of frequent flyers/travelers? There's all this time to spend while waiting, and yet, we arrive at our destination trying to catch up. In this time and age, there's something wrong with that, don't you think? ulla the vagabond

I have noticed few Internet Cafes per se, but as Brian Newberry points out, rooms or places where people can take their laptop and connect up. Indeed, when I was passing time in the MSP airport before flying home on Monday, I noticed that in the food court I was eating at, there was a telephone jack, that if I had a modem attached to my laptop, I could dial into my ISP. It was fairly innocuous, and if I hadn't been sitting right in front of the jack, I would not have noticed it. A friend of mine worked for a company developing Internet kiosks at airports, where with the swipe of a credit card, a person could access the Web for 10 minutes at a time. His company went out of business after rolling out Kiosks in 3 cities' airports. The cost of the Kiosks themselves, the red tape at the airports, the cost of installing the fiber optics in the terminals, led to their demise (along with the drying up of venture capital . . . .).
