First - thankyou everyone who organized, gave keynotes, presented panels... I had a great time. It was great meeting some old and new friends and seeing f2f (the discursive "talking heads" really have heads and bodies - aaargh!) some email addresses from this list although I did not get to say hello to all. At the moment I am still trying "filter" and "sort" everything I saw and heard while I was there and since I am not always very good at this .... who knows when I can come up with more. At the moment actually I'm wondering if I really *do* do "Internet Research " after all(;-)) - so thankyou Jonathan et al.... Computer games have now been taking up room in people's homes for over twenty-five years. The mid-seventies fad for the black and white block graphics of Pong has turned into an industry worth over $6 billion in the USA alone. The new generation of consoles along with the almost frenetic development in graphic and CPU technologies for PCs demonstrates a time of great technological innovation for gaming technology and this is reinforced by the growing importance of new methods of gaming-related retail such as web-based e-commerce and interactive digital television. Further, gamers are becoming increasingly organised and professionalised through growing consumer gaming exhibitions, national and international gaming competitions and arenas such as LAN parties and online gaming. At this rapidly moving point in the gaming industry the ESRC Centre for Research on Innovation and Competition (CRIC) will be hosting a conference of computer gaming, gamers and the gaming industry on the 5th-7th April 2002 at The University of Manchester. Bringing together researchers from sociology, psychology, games design, cultural studies, economics, management and other disciplines, along with members from various sectors of the gaming industry such as developers, publishers and retail the central aims of the conference are: * To provide an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and analysis on the gaming industry and gamer research * To foster research links between academic research and the gaming industry and develop new networks of research activity * To offer students a supportive environment for sharing and developing their idea with more established researchers * To facilitate dissemination of work produced for the conference in printed and electronic format The organisers welcome submissions from any discipline, as well as work from those producing games and other leisure-orientated new media or working within associated industries. Panel presentations which establish connections across disciplines, institutions and/or continents are especially encouraged. AoIR 2001 Conference in Minnesota

Fellow members of the Association of Internet Researchers and air-l subscribers: These are trying times, to greatly understate things. We will all struggle in one way or another to re-imagine the world now that everything has changed. The attacks in the U.S. this week were in part directed squarely at the U.S., But they were also directed in part at the world. The destruction of the World Trade Center towers killed and hurt many people from all walks of life, from all beliefs, races, countries. AoIR is an international organization, and each of us feels some sense of loss. Our thoughts go out particularly to those who have lost friends, family and acquaintances. We have been asked by several people whether the 2001 conference in Minneapolis will be cancelled. The executive committee, the conference organizers at the University of Minnesota and I have decided that the conference will not be cancelled. None of us associated with AoIR will ask anyone to do something with which they are uncomfortable. Were I to have to fly within the next week I would certainly think twice, although I think I would go ahead with it. I would be apprehensive about it, and will be for quite some time, and I will not be very happy at the prospect, and I will be ever so glad to land. However, the alternative is to cease travelling by air and therefore cease meeting indefinitely (except online, of course, or at short distances), and to lose all confidence in the variety of human systems on which the world is, and must, be based. I do not choose that alternative. Your choice, however, should, and will be, respected. We will, of course, keep abreast of events. Do not hesitate to e-mail me at sjones(a)uic.edu with any questions and concerns. I will look forward to seeing some of you in Minneapolis, and others of you at other places and times in the future. Emoticons and cultural imperialism

Emoticons were once a small expression of individual creativity. They still can be. However even this tiny bit of expression is being "alienated" by Microsoft. Messenger does not ban emoticons, on the contrary it encourages them. In doing so it interprets emoticons so they are no longer the property of the sender but become a cute little graphic designed by Microsoft. Thus some emoticons are acceptable and some are not interpreted and thus have a second-class status. New emoticons cannot be created without the approval of corporate power. This is a tiny tiny issue. AoIR 2.0, Day 3

Greetings: Wish you were here, the weather is, finally, Minnesotan. Well, it could be worse, it's colder, but not really cold, and it's raining and not snowing. The conference, on the other hand, continues to illuminate and, I hope, inspire. No one has taken me up on the invitation to post their impressions and observations of the conference, which is a shame as I'm the worst person to try to convey a sense of what's happening at panels! I continue to hear positive complaints (if there can be such a thing) that there are too many things going on at the same time. Indeed, the panels that I have been able to attend for at least a short while have been first-rate. Until I step down from the presidency in two years I fear I'll not hear many presentations at all. In some ways I suppose I am having an experience similar to that of other attendees, as we try to choose between concurrent sessions vying for our time and attention. That may, I fear, be a more common experience for us, as I expect the conference will only grow in size, and few of us can devote more than three or four days to attending a conference and we must therefore hold concurrent sessions. I would rather have it this way than to have the opposite, have a dearth of quality and quantity, and I will hope that we can continue to maintain the high quality of presentations and, importantly, the high level (quantitatively and qualitatively) of interaction. The keynotes have been stellar, and I am grateful for the keynote speakers who have come a very long way and prepared excellent talks for us. The reception and dinner last night was a wonderful occasion for socializing. Dara O'Neil was presented with the student paper award at the dinner, and AoIR was formally invited to the University of Maastricht, International Institute of Infonomics next October, for its 2002 conference. A call for papers and other conference information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. We are, to put it colloquially, "in the home stretch" of this conference, and I can already say that I will greatly miss the camaraderie, sharing and learning that have taken place in Minnesota. I shall hope to post again tomorrow, but given conference activities and travel I am not sure I shall be able to. Consequently, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the multitude of people who have contributed to this conference, the participants, the AoIR executive committee, and particularly: John Logie, conference coordinator Leslie Shade, conference program chair University of Minnesota administration, faculty, staff and students who have contributed, including (and I'm sure not limited to) Laura Gurak, Dan Burk, Terry Childers, Nora Paul, Joe Konstan, Pen Yew, K. K. Sinha, Lisa Disch, Gerald Miller, Dean Charles Muscoplat, Dean H. Ted Davis, Dean David Kidwell, Pat Benson and the entire crew of technology volunteers, Bob Bohanek and Steve Rychly of Apple Computer, and Unisys Corp. Thank you all! I am confident that with last year's conference at the University of Kansas and this year's at the University of Minnesota that we have set an excellent standard for our meetings.
