Hi Ronelle. You might check the site of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (www.ndltd.org) since that is an umbrella organization of nearly 200 universities that accept electronic TDs. You might be able to find some ammo by doing a search on sociological ETDs (electronic Theses & Diss) which could give you some concrete numbers to work with. Also it would give you leads on contacting the people who successfully submitted their work this way, and you could touch base with the universities who accept ETDs. You might also want to contact Simon Pockley, who is in your country, since he submitted the first ETD accepted in Australia (it was about the Aborigines). I don't have his address handy (I'm not on my own email client) but if you google his name, you will surely find him! Good luck, and feel free to keep in touch; I'd love to know how it turns out! Dear Ronelle A colleague made a similar case at a UK Univerisity and the thesis was examined in CD-Rom form. However, a paper copy had to be lodged with the University to satisfy the storage/publising criteria. His primary argument was that hypertext was both the theory and form of the thesis. I can give you more details if you mail me off list. This was in 1999 so things may have moved on. Hi. I am 12 months away from submitting my PhD thesis. My research is a sociological analysis of the concept of community and how this can be applied to collectivities who communicate solely through CMC. Due to the nature of my research data, I am making a case to my university to submit my thesis as an interactive CD-ROM. I have been asked by the doctoral examinations committee to formally request permission and justify why this is the most appropriate format for my thesis. I was hoping that my AOIR colleagues may be able to assist me in providing some precedents from other universities of PhD's submitted in this or alternative formats. Any suggestions, comments or ideas? A colleague of mine is working on developing a new research project. She was wondering if anyone on the AOIF listserv knows of any studies that compare traditional newspaper readers with on-line newspaper readers. (she's especially interested in focusing on their differences in knowledge of local issues or interest in local issues.) I would appreciate it if you could share any related information. Thanks! Janna, Some of the recent uses and gratifications and new technologies literature has covered this issue. Even though it's a few years old I recommend starting with Mings, S. (1997). Uses and gratifications of online newspapers: A preliminary study. Electronic Journal of Communication, 7 (3). Then, look through the reference list, run her article through the SSCI, search for more of her articles, and do a general search for uses and gratifications and online newspapers literature.
