While I've known people who used such software (eg., Negopy), I am not particularly knowledgeable. Further the appropriateness, cost, and robustness of any particular software can vary between different tasks. Barry Wellman's group and network would be knowledgeable (and he has a fine publications page http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman/publications/index.html ). Nine theoretical wrinkles of your mathematical situation: 1. defining and locating 'actors/actants/nodes' for your data; 2. relating 'mere' connectedness and centrality within networks to power over and in a network; 3. considering networks in networks (from my perspective any 'node' is itself a network); 4. relating links at the level of parts or at the level of super-sets to those which do not occur at the level of study, and vice versa; 5. clarifying the way the 'collection' of the data, particularly where it is 'easy' foregrounds certain questions over others; 6. Deciding whether to distinguish networks based on content, media, frequency, etc. or to combine them as a unitary network; 7. Determining or accounting for what is missing from the network (temporary autonomous situations/zones, hidden links, sensitive links, etc.); 8. Conversely, setting a value for what might be in or constituting a link in a network based on play, mistake, or other indeterminancies (other than eliminating it as noise); and importantly, 9. defining/deconstructing the boundary or level of the study, although boundary conditions can simply be asserted, often by someone evincing a perspective from 'outside' the network, even if they also 'belong' to it - the notion of 'deconstruction' is very much meant here. How one answers those questions will have a great impact on where and how the statistics are collected, and on what the statistics produce, what they reveal, and how they are interpreted. Good luck! Terminology query ...

Dear Colleagues, A colleague in Denmark asks a technical terminology question. Someone on this list may know the answer. He asks: "Would you please confirm that the right translation of the Danish word 'teleslynge' is 'handsfree' in English. Teleslynge means that if you have an hearing aid in your ear, the sound from i.e. a loudspeaker will come though your hearing aid via radio waves. In churches it is normal with this feature." I know most of you don't speak Danish, but I'd be grateful to know what such a device is called. If there is a term for a similar device, I'll welcome that information. Ken, I don't speak Danish, but here's a page re: the assistive technology you're talking about: http://members.aol.com/centrumweb/csalspur.html To my way of thinking, the work "handsfree" surely misses the mark. As a candidate I would: - Get more non-academic members involved - Spread the organization into Europe, Asia and Australia - Get a high quality content list up, next to the Air-l list about methodologies of Internet research - Open a dialogue with the Usability experts and their particular discourse and practice - Encourage to bridge academic work and similar research done in the field of new media culture/arts - Diversity the working definition of 'Internet research' - Encourage the study into social networks and alternative models for global Internet governance (beyond the ICANN debate) My bio: Geert Lovink is a media theorist and Internet critic. He is an organizer of numerous conferences, online forums, publications and projects such as community Internet providers, mailinglists and temporary media laboratories. Over the last two decades he has lived and worked in Berlin, Budapest, throughout Central and Eastern Europe and Japan, teaching media theory and supporting independent media and new media culture. He is a member of the theory association Adilkno, from which two books have appeared in English translation: Cracking the Movement (1994) and The Media Archive (1998). In 1995, he co-founded the international mailinglist Nettime, from which material was brought together in the Readme! anthology (1999). His decade long collaboration with Dutch designer Mieke Gerritzen is documented in Catalogue of Strategies (2001). In 2002 MIT Press will publish two of his books: Uncanny Networks, collected interviews with media theorists and artists and Dark Fiber, a study on critical Internet culture. Suggestion: Job Board

Hi all! While trying to put my platform into words I have had another idea that I did not include in my blurb, because I think we might be able to make this happen even for the upcoming Aoir 2.0 conference. It would require very little effort from each of us, but could have great potential outcome. I don't think we had this here in Lawrence, so I'm suggesting to make a job board for the conference in Minneapolis. Each of you whose university/school/department has a job announced that could be of interest to an Internet Researcher could bring a one-page ad and post it on the job board. The effort from the conference organizers would entail making/finding a board (if you let them know you intend to bring a posting they can plan), and finding a place to stand the board. I think this would be a great opportunity to become aware of Internet related jobs in other academic areas and countries, both for graduate students and for faculty looking to re-locate.
