PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITY FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS Global Media Journal (GMJ), a new online publication, features a section, Graduate Research Forum, specifically for papers written by graduate students on global communication related issues. The journal seeks to open up space for ideas that have taken life in the minds of graduate students but will probably not see light of the day for many more years in traditional journals. As these fresh ideas work their way through dissertation committees and journal review panels, they will get clearly defined, situated in relevant literature, and acquire a strength and durability that will withstand both the scrutiny of scholars and the test of time. But then, they will also loose their playfulness and zing that captured the imagination of an inexperienced but curious mind in the first place. GMJs Graduate Research Forum aims to both recognize and nurture ideas that may shape tomorrows intellectual landscape. Papers on any issue related to the role of media in the process of globalization would be appropriate for the Graduate Research Forum. Some of the possible topics could include: existing media structures and practices, globalization of TV genres, global media and consumer culture, the commercialization of news, development of alternative media, and structure of global Internet. Submissions should be no longer than twenty double-spaced pages and should conform to the APA style. Send your paper to Prof. Harmeet Sawhney, who is serving as the guest editor for the inaugural issue, as an email attachment (MS WORD FILE, RTF FORMAT) at HSAWHNEY(a)INDIANA.EDU. The guest editor will select the papers with assistance from GMJs editorial board. When you visit GMJs web site (http://www.globalmediajournal.com) you will see that the journal also features an interactive "Open Forum" for posing questions, making comments, and responding to queries. We anticipate that conversations generated by papers published in the Graduate Research Forum will spill over to the Open Forum generating valuable input for further development of your ideas. The other sections of GMJ include: refereed papers, book reviews, announcements, conferences, and employment opportunities. Prof. Yahya R. Kamalipour is the Editor-in-Chief of GMJ.

teaching tool: Technology and Development

As part of a class I taught last year on ³The Internet and Politics,² I developed an in-class exercise on technology and development. The exercise was greeted enthusiastically by my students, and spawned a number of term papers, so I thought it might be useful to other people teaching this topic. I¹ve created a page on my web site that describes the exercise and links to all the supplementary materials; it¹s online at http://www.alexandrasamuel.com/teaching/developmentcases/techdevelopment.htm l It¹s a group-based simulation exercise that asks each group to develop a development application for a specific technology. In the first part of the exercise, students are given a scenario, and work as a group to create their own technology-enabled development project. In the second part of the exercise, students learn about the real-world outcome from their scenario, and compare the real-world outcome with their own solution. The cases include Grameenphone, the Simputer project, community radio in Sri Lanka, and a couple of other projects. Please let me know if you use the exercise in your own teaching, and if you have any suggestions for how I can improve it (I¹m happy to answer any questions, too). Not to toot my own horn, but I'll toot my own horn here. :-) I co-authored a textbook titled _Internet Communication_ with Ty Adams and published by Wadsworth, which covers not only HTML but also the history of the Internet, characteristics of the medium, e-mail, chat, net conferencing, good design principles, graphic use, and implications of the Internet for other media, law, and society. It's definitely written at the undergrad level. The only potential drawback could be that if you want to teach the class JUST on HTML design, it'll cover more than you need. In the first case of its kind, U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz said the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies only to physical spaces, such as restaurants and movie theaters, and not to the Internet. "To expand the ADA to cover 'virtual' spaces would be to create new rights without well-defined standards," Seitz wrote in a 12-page opinion dismissing the case.
