I think it is absolutely essential to teach some sort of usability understanding before or while teaching web design. A technically sophisticated site can still look like crappola, and a very basic site can look good and work well. Hello, I teach Intro to Web Design regularly to undergrad Communication majors. My focus is on design and application-based development, rather than HTML, figuring that COMM majors are not computer science majors. My students generally have limited capacity and willingness to work with code. That said, I think it's important to introduce students to the basic structure of HTML so they know there is a lot going on underneath the WYSIWYG <http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/WYSIWYG.html> interfaces of web design applications. This takes one class day, at most. Beyond this, we work in Dreamweaver for site development. Here is a link to this semester's syllabus, if you're interested. Re distributed work, Pamela Hinds and Sara Kiesler have just published a dynamite edited book, Distributed Work. As Ben Anderson, there is a huge literature on CSCW (computer supported cooperative work). The CSCWers and the AoIRs seem mutually unaware of each other: the CSCW folks hang around with computer scientists more and both develop applications and study uses. (Go to their conference mid November and see for yourself -- check www.acm.org) One of the reasons I got involved in the next AoIR conference is to try to get these worthy sets of scholars engaged with each other. Video Game Addiction

Coincidentally, my honours thesis in the works is on this very topic of video game addiction. My emphasis is on the term addiction as potentially problematic in the way we describe ways that people could possibly using to form community. This is exemplified by the popularity of games like Everquest and other MMORPGS that have a large community component. In short, my hypothesis is that the community aspect, whether we realize it or not, is largely the drawing factor for many things we consider 'addiction.'
