Dear a.(o).i.r., Hi, I am a first-year graduate student (with very little research experience) interested in doing a research on how avatar as a visual manifestation of one's identity gets users engage in communication in comparison to the solely text-based embodiment on the Internet. Do you know any previous research related to this topic that you would like to recommend? I have found the following resources so far: - Kolko, B. (1999). How does performance (creation, perception and audience response, staging, distribution, etc.) change with the integration of electronic media? Alternatively, what can we gain by reconceiving of internet culture through an awareness of performance theory? For a special issue of Journal of Literacy and Technology and possible book publication, I am seeking work on some aspects of performance on-line. The key phrase performance on-line can be taken as applying either to performance as affected by electronic media in some respects or to performance which occurs entirely in electronic form. Submissions are encouraged from those working in some area which can be construed as performance as well as those approaching performance from a more theoretical perspective. Suggested topics / themes: web as performance space, performative identity on line, cultural poaching, web as extension of IRL, code as performative medium, or others. When you're told that getting a book published is not easy, you expect a lot of hard work, but be advised that a lot more can and, inevitably it seems, will go wrong. You'd hardly expect that the first shipment of your books actually goes up in flames, but in this case it did. It wasn't because of inflammatory content or fiery argument as a friend joked today, but because the freight container that was sitting in the Liverpool docks and held, amongst other things, my books, was broken into and set on fire. Less dramatic, but adding to the constant delays are the database problems the international distributor is having, preventing the book from getting listed in their online system. Possibly as a result all online bookstores insist on listing the book with a wrong subtitle. Never mind that both I and my publisher have mailed them about the problem numerous times. (This is a translation of an article published in the daily newspaper Kathimerini of 12/9/2002, available at http://www.kathimerini.gr/4dcgi/_w_articles_ell_399640_12/09/2002_37419 ) Internet Cafes v. Government = 1:0. A decision of the criminal courts of Thessaloniki two days ago held that the law that had banned electronic gaming in public and private places is unconstitutional, under the rationale that it is contravening article 5 of the Hellenic Constitution pertaining to the Free Movement of Ideas. With the same decision two owners and one employee of Internet Cafés that had been arrested under the said unconstitutional law were found not guilty. According to all indications, the next step will be an attempt to overturn the controversial law before the Hellenic Conseil dEtat, i.e. the supreme administrative court of the Hellenic Republic, but also before the European Court.
