EVENT: First Venezuelan Cyborg Festival

http://www.cyborgfestival.com/ I have been following the development of this event through the eyes of one of it's organizers, Roberto Aracal, on the http://www.well.com It has been heartening to see an intersection of art and the Internet as one form of response to the political chaos that Venezuela has been facing. I also found it interesting but totally sensible that there was a category for online community. I encourage you to pass the information along. Here is the event information from the organizers: The III International Arts Festival of the City of Valencia, Venezuela, sponsored by the Fundacion para La Cultura and the Mayors Office and Fundación Solaris, a private non-profit organization dedicated to the arts, is an event whose goals, since inception, have been to show recognized as well as emerging forms of artistic expression in the Citys public spaces. The Festival encourages works that span gender, linguistic and disciplinary backgrounds. This years Festival is guided by the same premise, and offers a new, electronic arts festival to promote and celebrate the use of information technologies as a new form of artistic expression. The purpose of the First Cyborg Festival is to stimulate emerging talent working in cyberspace. This event transcends conventional art boundaries, linking people and communities who create special encounters that help us to understand and enhance our life experiences in the twenty-first century. It will open its doors to creative minds who have made digital technology an essential tool for communal living; it will be a place for diversity and freedom of expression. Journalist looking for Expert

Hi, I am a reporter with The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC who is working on a story about fantasy sports -- fantasy football in particular. Specifically, I'm focusing on how the Internet has helped drive the growth of the industry. I'm looking for anybody who has done research on these games and could offer insight on the role the of Internet in the space, how the games have affected offline activities, i.e. changed the way people watch sports on television or affected productivity at work, or any other sociological-type biproducts of these fantasy sports. I'm on a relativley tight deadline and looking to talk with someone before Thursday, Sept. 12 at noon EDT. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Does anyone use IRC for student classroom exercises - eg practicals of virtual participant observation? If so, I'd be interested in what kinds of exercises you set students. At MSc level, this is an example of a current exercise which I set, but I'm wondering whether to be more explicit about use of particular clients, sites etc. (1) Select a topic of sociological interest and investigate the UK online resources about this topic (You can refer back to Hine's study for an example). This might include web pages, email discussion lists, chat spaces, usenet newsgroups, etc. Outline how you might collect data and analyse this topic using ONE of the online sources which you have found (ie either a chat space OR a discussion list OR a set of web pages). Bear in mind the following potentially significant issues: a. The sources of the data (eg who hosts the site, or organises the mailing list) and the effect on the kind of data which can be collected b. Ethical problems in data collection or analysis c. How your study compares to the studies in the assigned reading list d. Any methodological issues which arise which are specific to your topic\ (The 'Hine' book is Christine Hine's excellent book 'Virtual Ethnography') In general, students seemed to enjoy the exercise, although some found it hard to limit themselves to UK resources on more marginal topics.
